Background: Oxidative stress (OS) is associated with a variety of non-communicable diseases, including MetS, diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease through increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and impairment of antioxidant defense mechanisms. Antioxidants can protect cells against free radical damage, so it seems important to determine the relationship between the quality of dietary antioxidants intake and chronic diseases. The Dietary Antioxidant Quality Score (DAQS) is obtained by adding the daily intake of known dietary vitamins and minerals, including selenium, zinc, vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E, compared to the recommended daily intake (RDI).

Unlabelled: Anomalous left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery (ALCAPA) is considered a rare congenital heart disease where the take-off of the left coronary artery abnormally originates from the pulmonary artery instead of left aortic sinus. It is associated with a high mortality rate in the first year of life and sudden death in adults if left untreated. We report an adult form of ALCAPA syndrome in a 20-year-old female who presented with anginal pain for the previous few months.

Objectives: Adjacent segment degeneration (ASDe) and adjacent segment disease (ASDi) are potential long-term complications after lumbar fusion with rigid instrumentation. Dynamic fixation techniques (Topping-off) adjacent to the fused segments have been developed to curtail the risk of ASDe and ASDi. The current study sought to investigate whether the addition of dynamic rod constructs (DRC) in patients with preoperative degeneration in the adjacent disc was effective in reducing the risk of ASDi.

Article Synopsis
  • This paper presents a study on the use of a novel radiolabeled PET tracer, [Ga]Ga-CXCR4 PET/CT, to target chemokine receptor-4 (CXCR4) in high-grade glial brain tumors in treatment-naïve adult patients.
  • High-grade gliomas, known for their resistance to treatment, show a poor 5-year survival rate of 5-10%, with CXCR4 being overexpressed in these tumors.
  • The study involved 24 patients undergoing PET/CT imaging to assess tumor characteristics, with potential implications for machine learning in tumor identification and future theranostic applications.

Isolated greater omentum solid mass, a rare manifestation of hydatid disease; A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Caspian J Intern Med

January 2023

Department of General Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Mashhad Medical Sciences, Islamic Azad University, Mashhad, Iran.

Article Synopsis
  • Echinococcus granulosus is responsible for hydatid disease, which primarily affects the liver and lungs, but can also appear in less common sites like the omentum, with only seven cases recorded in Iran over the past 20 years.
  • A 33-year-old woman experienced abdominal pain and an identified mass, which turned out to be a hydatid cyst located in the greater omentum, highlighting the rarity of this occurrence.
  • The case emphasizes that hydatid cysts can manifest in various body parts, necessitating their consideration in diagnoses, especially in endemic regions such as Iran, where they can present with nonspecific symptoms.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is an aggressive type of cancer that originates in the cells called astrocytes, which support the functioning of nerve cells. It can develop in either the brain or the spinal cord and is also known as glioblastoma multiform. GBM is a highly aggressive cancer that can occur in either the brain or spinal cord.

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a common chronic disease with several complications. Given that, studies on the association of plant-based diet indices (PDIs) with risk of MetS among adults with obesity, are limited, we aimed to examine the association between PDIs (including overall PDI, healthy PDI (hPDI), unhealthy PDI (uPDI)) and MetS in Iranian adults with obesity.

Methods: In Tabriz, Iran, a total of 347 adults between the ages of 20 and 50 participated in this cross-sectional research study.

Background: Harmonization methods reduce variability between different make and models of positron emission tomography (PET) scanners. The study aims to explore harmonization strategies that lead to comparable and robust quantitative metrics in a multicenter setting.

Methods: NEMA IEC Phantom data acquisition was performed for low and high spheres-to-background ratios (SBR4:1 and 10:1) on six PET/CT (computed tomography) scanners.

Intracranial schwannomas (ISs) account for approximately 8% of intracranial tumors, while IS, a rare entity, is responsible for roughly 1% of IS. A 33-year-old man with a 3-month headache and sudden onset seizure was referred to our clinic. Preoperative magnetic resonance imaging revealed a contrast-enhancing mass accompanied by cystic components in the right temporal lobe.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on creating a new tool to assess health-related quality of life (HRQoL) specifically for patients with chronic heart failure (CHF), evaluating its effectiveness and reliability.
  • Using input from 10 experts and data from 495 patients, the tool underwent extensive testing, including factor analyses and validity assessments, resulting in a refined questionnaire with 20 items reflecting a four-factor model.
  • Results showed that the new CHFQOLQ-20 not only effectively distinguishes between different patient functional classifications but also demonstrates strong internal consistency and reliability.

Background: Choline is an important metabolite involved in phospholipids synthesis, including serum lipids, and is the immediate precursor of betaine. There are numerous studies with inconsistent results that evaluated the association between dietary choline intakes with cardiovascular risk factors. In addition, the association between dietary betaine and choline intakes with cardio-metabolic risk factors is not well studied.

PET tracers in glioblastoma: Toward neurotheranostics as an individualized medicine approach.

Front Nucl Med

February 2023

The Persian Gulf Nuclear Medicine Research Center, Department of Molecular Imaging and Theranostics, Bushehr Medical University Hospital, School of Medicine, Bushehr University of Medical Sciences, Bushehr, Iran.

Over the past decade, theragnostic radiopharmaceuticals have been used in nuclear medicine for both diagnosis and treatment of various tumors. In this review, we carried out a literature search to investigate and explain the role of radiotracers in the theragnostic approach to glioblastoma multiform (GBM). We primarily focused on basic and rather common positron emotion tomography (PET) radiotracers in these tumors.

January 2023

Genetics Research Centre, Molecular and Clinical Sciences Institute, St George's, University of London, Cranmer Terrace, London SW17 0RE, UK.

Inherited cardiomyopathies are a prevalent cause of heart failure and sudden cardiac death. Both hypertrophic (HCM) and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) are genetically heterogeneous and typically present with an autosomal dominant mode of transmission. Whole exome sequencing and autozygosity mapping was carried out in eight un-related probands from consanguineous Middle Eastern families presenting with HCM/DCM followed by bioinformatic and co-segregation analysis to predict the potential pathogenicity of candidate variants.
