Artifacts in Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography.

J Ophthalmic Vis Res

April 2021

Eye Research Center, The Five Senses Institute, Rassoul Akram Hospital, Iran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran.

We performed a comprehensive search of the published literature in PubMed and Google Scholar to identify types, prevalence, etiology, clinical impact, and current methods for correction of various artifacts in optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) images. We found that the prevalence of OCTA image artifacts is fairly high. Artifacts associated with eye motion, misidentification of retinal layers, projections, and low optical coherence tomography signal are the most prevalent types.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the use of disease-modifying drugs (DMDs) as a treatment for idiopathic sclerosing orbital inflammatory syndrome (ISOIS), a rare and challenging condition.
  • Conducted at a university hospital, it involved five biopsy-confirmed patients, whose disease activity was monitored using systematic criteria and treated with a combination of anti-TNF alpha agents, azathioprine, and low-dose corticosteroids.
  • Results showed that all patients experienced a decrease in disease activity over an average follow-up of nearly 33 months, suggesting that biologic DMDs could effectively manage ISOIS and potentially alter its progression.

Assessment of Utility in Migraine: Mapping the Migraine-Specific Questionnaire to the EQ-5D-5L.

Value Health Reg Issues

September 2021

Headache Department, Iranian Center of Neurological Research, Neuroscience Institute, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran; Department of Cellular and Molecular Nutrition, School of Nutritional Sciences and Dietetics, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran.

Introduction: There are increasing demands for studies of cost-effectiveness to allocate resources for disease prevention and treatment strategies. The aim of this study is to measure quality of life in migraineurs, based on the Migraine-Specific Questionnaire (MSQ) and EQ-5D-5L, and thereafter map an algorithm to estimate health-state utility values from the MSQ in individuals with migraine.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study conducted between May and July 2018 in a tertiary headache clinic in Tehran, Iran, migraineurs diagnosed based on International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD)-3β were enrolled and were asked to complete the MSQ questionnaire and EQ-5D questionnaire.

Evaluation of pro-oxidant antioxidant balance in retinopathy of prematurity.

Eye (Lond)

January 2022

Department of Midwifery, School of Medical Sciences, Tonekabon Branch, Islamic Azad University, Tonekabon, Iran.

Introduction: Retinopathy of prematurity (RoP) is a vasoproliferative disorder caused by the abnormal development of retinal vessels in premature neonates. It is one of the major causes of childhood blindness, which is increasing with the increasing survival rate of low birth weight and premature neonates. This study has aimed to evaluate the role of oxidative stress and peroxidant antioxidant balance (PAB) in the pathogenesis and prediction of RoP.

Background: New Oral Anticoagulants (NOACs) such as Rivaroxaban are introduced as alternatives to conventional vitamin-K antagonists in the long-term treatment of thrombotic events due to their lower bleeding risk. There is a lack of evidence on the effectiveness and safety of Rivaroxaban in Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT). This study aims to assess the effectiveness and bleeding risk of Rivaroxaban in comparison with Warfarin for the treatment of CVT.

Objectives: Three prior studies (2008, 2011, 2018) histopathologically compared the eyelid specimens of patients with dermatochalasis (DC, undergoing blepharoplasty) with a control group and proposed that DC may begin with subclinical inflammation leading to elastolysis and lymphostasis. With growing number of younger patients consulting for blepharoplasty, the unanswered question is whether histopathologic changes of DC differ between the younger and the older.

Patients And Methods: In this prospective case series, 20 right upper eyelid skin of 20 nonsmoker, class 3 Fitzpatrik skin type women (30-68 years old) were histopathologically examined.

Purpose: To determine the appropriate number of histopathological cross-sections that are required for a conclusive diagnosis of giant cell arteritis (GCA).

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, the number of sections per slide for paraffin-embedded blocks for 100 randomly selected cases where GCA was suspected and those for negative temporal artery biopsies (TABs) were compared with the number of cross-sections per specimen for eight positive-TABs. All aforementioned examinations were conducted at our center from 2012 to 2016.

Necrosis of the optic nerve and chiasm with safe radiation doses: Report of two rare cases.

Eur J Ophthalmol

May 2022

Department of Ophthalmology, Eye Research Center, The Five Senses Institute, Rassoul Akram Hospital, Iran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran.

Introduction: Radiation-induced optic neuropathy (RION) is still a devastating complication of brain and skull base radiation that has no effective treatment up until today, thus uttermost caution must be taken in treating patients that brain radiotherapy is needed. We present two cases of RION that happened in seemingly safe radiation doses.

Case Description: A 48-year-old female with a history of pleomorphic pituitary adenoma developed bilateral and painless loss of vision 10 months after radiation to the brain; the total radiation dose was 45 Gy in 25 fractions and no other risk factors of RION were found.

The purpose of this study was to introduce a new deep learning (DL) model for segmentation of the fovea avascular zone (FAZ) in en face optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and compare the results with those of the device's built-in software and manual measurements in healthy subjects and diabetic patients. In this retrospective study, FAZ borders were delineated in the inner retinal slab of 3 × 3 enface OCTA images of 131 eyes of 88 diabetic patients and 32 eyes of 18 healthy subjects. To train a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) model, 126 enface OCTA images (104 eyes with diabetic retinopathy and 22 normal eyes) were used as training/validation dataset.
