Ocular Biometric Values and Prevalence of Corneal Astigmatism in Patients Candidate for Cataract Surgery.

Purpose: To analyze the biometric values and the prevalence of corneal astigmatism in cataract surgery candidates.

Methods: This is a prospective study. Ocular biometric values and corneal keratometric astigmatism were measured by optical low-coherence reflectometry (Lenstar LS 900) before surgery in patients who were candidates for cataract extraction surgery.

Ocular Manifestations of Newly Diagnosed Acute Leukemia Patients.

Purpose: To present primary ocular manifestations in acute leukemia.

Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive hospital-based study evaluated all newly diagnosed leukemia patients of three referral hospitals of Tehran University of Medical Sciences in 2015-2016 and Mahak Hospital in Tehran in 2017. Exclusion criteria included the patients with the previous history of chemotherapy, cases of relapsing disease, and the patients with a history of ocular disease or other systemic conditions with ophthalmic manifestations.

Trans-Scleral Cyclophotocoagulation in Refractory Pigment Dispersion-Like Glaucoma Secondary to Ciliary Body Melanoma.

Purpose: To report a case of ciliary body melanoma with acute high intraocular pressure (IOP) due to pigment dispersion, treated by limited trans-scleral cyclophotocoagulation (TSCPC) and plaque radiotherapy.

Methods: A 33-year-old woman was referred to clinic with acute ocular pain and decreased visual acuity from 1 week before presentation. The IOP was 55 mmHg accompanied by red eye, perilimbal injection, mild corneal edema (stromal and epithelial), scattered pigment dust on central corneal endothelium, 4 anterior chamber pigments, and pigmented cells.

Human-induced pluripotent stem cells-derived retinal pigmented epithelium, a new horizon for cells-based therapies for age-related macular degeneration.

Retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) degeneration is the hallmark of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD, as one of the most common causes of irreversible visual impairment worldwide, remains in need of an appropriate approach to restore retinal function. Wet AMD, which is characterized by neovascular formation, can be stabilized by currently available therapies, including laser photocoagulation, photodynamic therapy, and intraocular injections of anti-VEFG (anti-vascular endothelial growth factor) therapy or a combination of these modalities.

Circular RNAs as novel biomarkers in triple-negative breast cancer: a systematic review.

More effective prognostic and diagnostic tools are urgently required for early detecting and treating triple-negative breast cancer, which is the most acute type of breast cancer because of its lower survival rate, aggressiveness, and non-response to various common treatments. So, it remains the most harmful malignancy for women worldwide. Recently, circular RNAs, as a group of non-coding RNAs, with covalently closed loop and high stability have been discovered, which can modulate gene expression through competing with endogenous microRNA sponges.

Optic pit-like maculopathy in a patient without any detectable disc anomalies.

Macular schisis is the splitting of the inner retinal layers at macula, with or without associated detachment. The acquired form of macular schisis is frequently associated with optic disc pit maculopathy, although it could be accompanied by several conditions such as tractional maculopathies, cystoid macular edema, veno-occlusive disease, and shaken baby syndrome. However, a small number of cases of retinoschisis without optic disc pit have been reported elsewhere.

Improvement of pseudophakic cystoid macular edema with subconjunctival injections of interferon α2b:a case report.

Purpose: To report a patient with resistant cystoid macular edema after an uneventful phacoemulsification cataract surgery who responded to subconjunctival interferon α2b injections.

Observations: This report describes a 60-year-old male patient with pseudophakic cystoid macular edema that was unresponsive to multiple courses of topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and steroids during the follow-up period. Weekly subconjunctival interferon α2b (5 MIU/ml) was administered four times.

An assessment on the use of infra-scanner for the diagnosis of the brain hematoma in head trauma.

Purpose: Timely identification and treatment of intracranial hematomas in patients with brain injury is essential for successful treatment. This study evaluates Infra-scanner as a handy medical screening tool for diagnosing, on-site, cerebral hematomas in patients with head injury.

Materials And Methods: Patients referred to the emergency department of university hospitals with mild to moderate brain trauma, up to 12 h from injury were included.

Role of Different Types of Contact Lenses in Epithelial Thickness.

Objective: To evaluate the potential role of different types of contact lenses, such as soft (SCL), hard (HCL), and mini scleral (SCCL), in corneal epithelial thickness with anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT).

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, patients who used contact lens at recent 6 months were recruited consecutively from September 2019 to October 2019, and the epithelial thicknesses of the cornea were obtained by AS-OCT and compared with control subjects who did not use contact lens.

Results: In total, 184 eyes (115 subjects) were included; of them, 75 eyes were keratoconic (KCN) and 109 eyes were nonkeratoconic (non-KCN).

The Vascular Pattern In Vicinity Of Chorioretinal Coloboma: An Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography Study.

Background: Chorioretinal coloboma is a congenital anomaly which can be present in a clinical spectrum with a possibility of significant influence on visual acuity. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has been frequently used for the study of chorioretinal coloboma. OCT angiography (OCTA), as a non-invasive method of taking high-resolution images of chorioretinal vessels, can improve our understanding of developmental aspects of this anomaly.

Neural synchrony in brain circuits is the mainstay of cognition, including memory processes. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that disrupts neural synchrony in specific circuits, associated with memory dysfunction before a substantial neural loss. Recognition memory impairment is a prominent cognitive symptom in the early stages of AD.

Human IL-2Rɑ subunit binding modulation of IL-2 through a decline in electrostatic interactions: A computational and experimental approach.

Although high-dose IL-2 has clear antitumor effects, severe side effects like severe toxicity and activation of Tregs by binding of IL-2 to high-affinity IL-2R, hypotension, and vascular leak syndrome limit its applications as a therapeutic antitumor agent. Here in this study, a rational computational approach was employed to develop and design novel triple-mutant IL-2 variants with the aim of improving IL-2-based immunotherapy. The affinity of the mutants towards IL-2Rα was further computed with the aid of molecular dynamic simulations and umbrella sampling techniques and the obtained results were compared to those of wild-type IL-2.

Long-Term Visual and Refractive Stability and Ocular Biometric Changes after Laser-Assisted Subepithelial Keratomileusis for Correction of Myopia: An 8-Year Follow-Up.

Purpose: To assess the long-term visual and refractive stability and ocular biometric changes in low to moderate myopic subjects treated by laser-assisted subepithelial keratomileusis (LASEK).

Methods: It is a prospective, interventional study. Included were 70 eyes of 35 patients who underwent LASEK for correction of ≤6 diopters (D) myopia.

Postoperative Blepharoptosis after Trabeculectomy versus Ahmed Glaucoma Valve Implantation.

Purpose: To investigate the frequency of persistent postoperative ptosis (PP) following trabeculectomy or Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) implantation and to analyze the associated factors.

Methods: It is a prospective observational study on glaucoma patients who underwent trabeculectomy or AGV implantation from October 2015 to June 2017 in a tertiary center. Margin reflex distance 1 and 2 (MRD1 and 2) and levator function were measured before and at least 6 months, postoperatively.

Recurrent Pterygium: A Review.

Purpose: To summarize the recent evidence regarding different aspects of pterygium recurrence.

Methods: Human-based studies from PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar were identified using the following keywords: conjunctival disease, pterygium, recurrent pterygium, pterygium recurrence, pterygium management/surgery, conjunctival autograft (CAU), amniotic membrane graft/transplant, and adjuvant therapy (January 2009 to February 2021). We reviewed risk factors associated with the recurrence of pterygium, timing of recurrence, medical treatments to prevent from recurrence, and nonsurgical and surgical alternatives for management of recurrence.

Comparison of retinal vascular arcade trajectory between eyes with an idiopathic macular hole and the healthy fellow eye.

Purpose: We aimed to present a method to evaluate the retinal arcade vascular trajectory by measuring the distance between the retinal veins in eyes with idiopathic macular hole (IMH) and comparing this measurement with healthy fellow eyes.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study 18 patients with unilateral IMH were enrolled. We used standard fundus photographs, which were obtained from each eye with a digital fundus camera using a 55-degree lens.

Differentiating features of OCT angiography in diabetic macular edema.

The purpose of current study was to evaluate different optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) metrics in eyes with diabetic retinopathy with and without diabetic macular edema (DME). In this retrospective study, macular OCTA images of eyes with non-proliferative or proliferative diabetic retinopathy were evaluated. Vascular density, vascular complexity and non-perfusion densities were compared between eyes with and without DME.

Femtosecond Laser-assisted Allogenic Additive Stromal Keratoplasty With or Without Excimer Laser Donor Keratomileusis for Management of Keratoconus.

We describe a modified allogenic intrastromal lenticule implantation technique for management of keratoconus (KCN). Patients with advanced KCN already scheduled for corneal transplantation were enrolled. An allogenic corneal lenticule was implanted inside a stromal pocket created by femtosecond laser.

Side Effects of Brolucizumab.

Age-related macular degeneration and its complication, subretinal neovascularization, are common causes of progressive, irreversible impairment of central vision. Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapy has improved the visual outcome and provided an evolution in the treatment of retinal disease. The current four anti-VEGF drugs - pegaptanib, ranibizumab, aflibercept, and bevacizumab - have been administered for many years.

Intravitreal Methotrexate.

Intravitreal methotrexate (MTX) has been proven to be an effective treatment for various intraocular diseases. In this article, a comprehensive review was performed on intravitreal applications of methotrexate. Different aspects of the administration of intravitreal MTX for various clinical conditions such as intraocular tumors, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and uveitis were reviewed and the adverse effects of intravitreal injection of MTX were discussed.

Short-term changes of cornea and tear film after ruthenium-106 plaque therapy for intraocular tumors.

Purpose: Plaque therapy is a well-recognized treatment for intraocular tumors. In current study, we aimed to prospectively investigate the short-term effects of ruthenium 106 (Ru-106) plaque therapy on the cornea and ocular surface parameters.

Methods: Twenty-five patients diagnosed with choroidal melanoma which undergone Ru-106 plaque therapy from 2016 to 2018 were included.

Key criteria for engineering mycotoxin binding aptamers via computational simulations: Aflatoxin B1 as a case study.

Due to the difficulties in monoclonal antibody production specific to mycotoxins, aptameric probes have been considered as suitable alternatives. The low efficiency of the SELEX procedure in screening high affinity aptamers for binding mycotoxins as small molecules can be significantly improved through computational techniques. Previously, we designed five new aptamers to aflatoxin B (AFB1) based on a known aptamer sequence (Patent: PCT/CA2010/001 292, Apt1) through a genetic algorithm-based in silico maturation strategy and experimentally measured their affinity to the target toxin.
