Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a globally prevalent malignancy, primarily affecting the colon and rectum, characterized by uncontrolled cellular changes in the intestinal wall lining. Recent evidence underlines the significant role of the CXCL12/CXCR4 axis in the development of CRC, suggesting that inhibiting this pathway could be a promising therapeutic approach. This study focuses on investigating the potential of N, N''-thiocarbonylbis (N'-(3,4-dimethyl phenyl)-2,2,2-trifluoroacetimidamide) (A1), a novel fluorinated CXCR4 inhibitor, through a comprehensive analysis encompassing in silico, in vitro, and in vivo studies.

Adv Biomed Res

November 2024

Eye Research Center, The Five Senses Health Institute, Rassoul Akram Hospital, Iran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran.

Actinomycosis is an infection caused by and mainly affects cervicofacial areas. In women, other regions, such as the chest, abdomen, and pelvic cavity can involve actinomycosis. Actinomycosis lesions in the oral cavity can cause pain, swelling, induration, pus discharge, and discomfort similar to other benign or malignant pathologies.

Exploring Nasal Wall Cartilage Asymmetry in Rhinoplasty: Implications for Postoperative Symmetry.

Aesthetic Plast Surg

October 2024

Eye Research Center, The Five Senses Health Institute, Iran University of Medical Sciences, Rassoul Akram Hospital, Tehran, Iran.

Introduction: Facial symmetry is prized for its association with health, genetic quality, and attractiveness, but minor asymmetries are common. Human asymmetry tends to favor the left side and is noticeable in various nose parts. However, the discrepancy in cartilage thickness between the nose's right and left sides remains understudied.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) has been implicated in neural loss and, consequently, motor/sensory impairment. Here, we propose an improved formation for fibrous mat fabrication from the derivatives of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and gelatin (Gela) through horseradish peroxidase-mediated cross-linking, providing a sustained release of methylprednisolone (MP) for SCI repair. After 28 days, the animals were evaluated in terms of remyelination and apoptosis and underwent behavioral tests.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study at Khalili Hospital analyzed 141 cases of these injuries, finding that knives, wood, and glass were common causes, with a significant number of injuries resulting in serious conditions like iris prolapse and traumatic cataracts.
  • * The research underscores the importance of preventive measures, parental supervision, and timely medical intervention to reduce the risk of severe outcomes, like retinal detachment, in young children who suffer from these injuries.

  • Deep brain stimulation (DBS) shows promise in treating Alzheimer's disease (AD), but its invasive nature limits its use; targeting the olfactory bulb (OB) could provide a less invasive option as it’s closely connected to memory areas and displays early AD-related changes.
  • The study tested the effects of electrical stimulation of the OB on working memory and brain alterations in rats modeled to exhibit Alzheimer's-like symptoms, using daily stimulation over 18 days followed by various evaluations.
  • The results indicated that stimulating the OB reduced amyloid beta plaque buildup, improved working memory, and enhanced brain connectivity during memory tasks, suggesting that this approach might pave the way for new, less invasive Alzheimer's treatments targeting the olfactory pathway.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigated the microvasculature of the optic disc using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in healthy individuals and those with various optic nerve conditions.
  • It involved a comparison of RNFL thickness and vessel density among groups: patients with optic nerve head drusen (ONHD), active papilledema, acute NAION, and healthy controls.
  • Results showed that while RNFL thickness was higher in all patient groups compared to controls, peripapillary vessel density was notably lower in the NAION and papilledema groups, indicating changes in microvasculature with these conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • Patients with chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia (CPEO) are frequently misdiagnosed with congenital ptosis or ocular myasthenia gravis, often leading to unnecessary surgical procedures before receiving the correct diagnosis.
  • A study of 32 CPEO patients revealed an average diagnostic delay of about 25 years, with many having undergone multiple eyelid surgeries prior to CPEO confirmation.
  • Emphasizing the importance of early family history review and awareness of other CPEO symptoms could help reduce the rate of misdiagnosis and improve timely intervention.

Retinal displacement following direct versus indirect fluid exchange in pars Plana vitrectomy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.

Eur J Ophthalmol

September 2024

Eye Research Center, Eye Department, The Five Senses Health Institute, Rassoul Akram Hospital, School of Medicine, Iran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the occurrence and characteristics of retinal displacement after two different methods of fluid exchange during vitrectomy in patients with retinal detachment.
  • A total of 58 eyes were examined, with one group undergoing direct fluid exchange and the other indirect; retinal displacement was evaluated using imaging one month post-surgery.
  • Although both methods showed similar rates of displacement, the indirect group had a significantly higher average displacement, suggesting that the direct method may be more effective in reducing retinal shift post-surgery.

Purpose: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody disease (MOGAD) are immune-mediated disorders that can often manifest with optic neuritis (ON) among other symptoms. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is an emerging diagnostic method that can quantify retinal capillary blood flow and vessel density (VD), which have been shown to be affected in NMOSD and MOGAD. Hence, we aimed to systematically review the studies addressing retinal microvasculature using OCTA in these diseases.

Botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs), produced by Clostridium botulinum, have been used for the treatment of various central and peripheral neurological conditions. Recent studies have suggested that BoNTs may also have a beneficial effect on pain conditions. It has been hypothesized that one of the mechanisms underlying BoNTs' analgesic effects is the inhibition of pain-related receptors' transmission to the neuronal cell membrane.

Clobenpropit is a histamine H3 receptor antagonist and has developed as a potential therapeutic drug due to its ability to inhibit CXCR4, a chemokine receptor involved in autoimmune diseases and cancer pathogenesis. The CXCL12/CXCR4 axis involves several biological phenomena, including cell proliferation, migration, angiogenesis, inflammation, and metastasis. Accordingly, inhibiting CXCR4 can have promising clinical outcomes in patients with malignancy or autoimmune disorders.
