Background: Implant subsidence is an undesirable effect after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). We investigated the relation between the rate of implant subsidence and the ratio of the implant surface area to the surface area of the adjacent bone.
Methods: We operated 170 disc spaces in a group of 104 patients.

Background: Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is one of the most commonly performed procedures for degenerative cervical disease. The evaluation of fusion status is still not fully standardized, and a variety of measurement methods are used. This study presents our own evaluation of fusion by comparing two types of implants.

Background: In the last few decades, surgical techniques have been developed in thoracic surgery, and minimally invasive strategies such as multi-and uniportal video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) have become more favorable even for major pulmonary resections. With this surgical evolution, the aesthetic approach has also changed, and a paradigm shift has occurred. The traditional conception of general anesthesia, muscle relaxation, and intubation has been re-evaluated, and spontaneous breathing plays a central role in our practice by performing non-intubated thoracoscopic surgeries (NITS-VATS).

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is the usage of a mild electrical current through electrodes that stimulate nerves. Patients with malignancies experience pain and chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy. A systematic review was performed to find research evaluating the effect of TENS on these two common symptoms decreasing the quality of life in cancer patients.

Background: Ischemia-reperfusion injury remains a major clinical problem in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), leading to myocardial damage despite early reperfusion by primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI). There are no effective therapies to limit ischemia-reperfusion injury, which is caused by multiple pathways activated by rapid tissue reoxygenation and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). FDY-5301 contains sodium iodide, a ubiquitous inorganic halide and elemental reducing agent that can act as a catalytic anti-peroxidant.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the 10-year efficacy and safety of laser ablation (LA) for the treatment of solitary papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC). LA was performed on patients with low-risk PTMC (diagnosed using fine-needle aspiration cytology) who refused or were ineligible for surgery between 2008 and 2011. Ultrasonography was performed to evaluate the ablated volumes and potential recurrences on the day after the procedure, as well as at 1 week, 1, 3, and 6 months, and every 6 months thereafter for 10 years.

Purpose: Iliocapsularis (IC) is a small muscle overlying the capsule of the hip joint. Although recent attention is being given to this muscle by orthopedic surgeons who encounter it during the anterior approach to total hip arthroplasty, little is known about its anatomical features. The aim of this study was to review the anatomy of IC, and describe its' origin, insertion, blood supply, innervation, muscle fiber characteristics and size.

The presence of a persistent median artery (PMA) has been implicated in the development of compression neuropathies and surgical complications. Due to the large variability in the prevalence of the PMA and its subtypes in the literature, more awareness of its anatomy is needed. The aim of our meta-analysis was to find the pooled prevalence of the antebrachial and palmar persistent median arteries.

Background: Intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration plays a crucial role in the pathophysiology of low back pain. Several grading systems have been developed for both morphological and radiological assessment. The aim of this study was to assess the morphological and radiological characteristics of IVD degeneration and validate popular radiological Pfirrmann scale against morphological Thompson grading system.

Previous studies have reported that the use of incisional negative pressure wound therapy (INPWT) might reduce the incidence of wound infections, although its mechanism remains unknown. We designed a prospective study to explore the effects of INPWT on different stages of the wound healing process. After meeting the inclusion criteria, 108 patients were enrolled.

Intratumoral genomic and cellular heterogeneity of HGGs contributes to therapeutic resistance, recurrence, and poor clinical outcomes. Transcriptomic profiles of HGGs at recurrence have not been investigated in detail.

Anti-tumour therapies eliminate proliferating tumour cells by induction of DNA damage, but genomic aberrations or transcriptional deregulation may limit responses to therapy. Glioblastoma (GBM) is a malignant brain tumour, which recurs inevitably due to chemo- and radio-resistance. Human RecQ helicases participate in DNA repair, responses to DNA damage and replication stress.

Background: Most cervical spine procedures in patients with degenerative disc disease involve discectomy and remo-val of osteophytes in posterior vertebral body surfaces followed by interbody stabilisation with an interbody implant. Interbody implants are made of a variety of materials, differing in structural design, shape and surface topography. Considering that fusion between the implant and host bone is crucial for long-term positive outcomes, the choice of an appropriate implant is significantly important clinically and continues to be an important area of study.

The EORTC QLQ-C15-PAL is a shortened version of the widely used EORTC QLQ-C30. This questionnaire was developed to measure the symptoms and functional health of patients receiving palliative care. To enhance clinical interpretability of the EORTC QLQ-C15-PAL, our aim was to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of thresholds for clinical importance developed previously for the QLQ-C30 when applied to the QLQ-C15-PAL scales.

Introduction: In patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) the implanted stent may not fully cover the whole intravascular ultrasound (IVUS)-derived thin-cap fibroatheroma (TCFA) related to the culprit lesion (CL).
Aim: Whether this phenomenon is more pronounced when optical coherence tomography (OCT) assessment of the CL is performed is not known.
Material And Methods: Thus, we aimed to assess CLs in 40 patients with AMI treated with PCI, using VH (virtual histology)-IVUS and OCT before and after intervention.

Cushing syndrome (CS) is rare in pregnancy, and few cases have been reported to date. Women with untreated CS rarely become pregnant because of the ovulatory dysfunction induced by hypercortisolism. It is difficult to diagnose CS in pregnancy because of its very low incidence, the overlap between the clinical signs of hypercortisolism and the physiological changes that occur during pregnancy and the changes in hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis activity that occur during pregnancy and limit the value of standard diagnostic testing.

Objectives: The aim of this article was to establish thresholds for clinical importance (TCIs) for the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) Core measure, the new adaptive version of the EORTC QLQ-C30.
Study Design And Setting: For our diagnostic study, we recruited cancer patients with mixed diagnoses and treatments from six European countries. Patients completed the EORTC CAT Core and a questionnaire with anchor items assessing criteria for clinical importance (limitations in everyday life, need for help/care, and worries by the patient/family/partner) for each EORTC CAT Core domain.
