Presentation and Management of Facial Fractures: An Experience from a Tertiary-Care Teaching Institute in India.

Background: Most tertiary-care teaching institutes in low and middle-income nations lack dedicated oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) units in the emergency trauma centers. Consequently, most facial fractures need to be managed in the otolaryngology and head-neck surgery (ORL-HNS) setup.

Objectives: To present a study on a series of patients with facial fractures attending the emergency and outpatient departments of ORL-HNS in a tertiary-care teaching institute in India that lacked the facility of OMFS in its emergency trauma center.

Osseous Metaplasia of Cervix Mimicking Cervical Cancer - A Rare Case Report.

Osseous metaplasia (OM) of the cervix without involvement of the uterus is an extremely rare entity. Only few cases had been reported in the literature. We reported a rare case of OM of the cervix clinically mimicking cervical cancer.

Over-the-Counter Medicine-Seeking Behavior in Patients With Dermatophyte Infections Across Various Socioeconomic Strata: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background And Objective: In dermatology outpatient departments in India, dermatophytosis is the most commonly encountered dermatosis. The objective was to collect data regarding the prevalence of over-the-counter (OTC) medication, knowledge of the illness, and hygiene habits among people with dermatophyte infections across various socioeconomic classes.

Methods: At a tertiary care facility in central India, a cross-sectional study was carried out over six months.

Effect of educational intervention on risk factors of cardiovascular diseases among school teachers: a quasi-experimental study in a suburb of Kolkata, West Bengal, India.

Objective: This prospective study aimed to evaluate the effects of a health education intervention on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors among school teachers.

Methods: The study, conducted from August 2016 to May 2017, involved teachers from four schools in Baruipur, West Bengal, India. It was a multicentric, quasi-experimental study with an intervention group receiving tailored health education promoting lifestyle modifications, while the control group received no intervention.

COVID-19 and Mucormycosis of Orofacial Region: A Scoping Review.

During the second wave of coronavirus disease, or COVID-19, infection due to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus in the year 2021 around the globe, there is a surge in the number of cases of mucormycosis or "Black Fungus" that is directly/indirectly associated with COVID-19. In this review article, mucormycosis of the orofacial region has gained importance from the maximum published literature (45 articles) from various databases like PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase. Rhino-orbital cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) is a fatal condition associated with COVID-19 among categories of mucormycosis such as pulmonary, oral, gastrointestinal, cutaneous, and disseminated.

Filaggrin gene polymorphisms in Indian children with atopic dermatitis: A cross-sectional multicentre study.

Background Filaggrin (FLG) gene encoding the protein filaggrin plays an important role in barrier function of the skin and its alteration is a predisposing factor for atopic dermatitis. FLG gene variants result in absent or decreased filaggrin protein. Worldwide, the prevalence of FLG variants ranges from 14 to 56%.

Socio-demographic and Audiological Profile of the Board-Reviewed Applicants for Hearing Handicap Certification in a Tertiary Care Teaching Institute in Eastern India.

To analyze the socio-demographic and audiological profile of the applicants for hearing handicap certification in the Medical Board (henceforth, "Board") of a tertiary care teaching institute. This is a retrospective record review (March 2019-February 2020) from the archival computer database of the institutional Board. The procedure for audiological assessment prior to Board review and thereafter, the evaluation at the Board (computation of hearing impairment) for eligibility for certification was discussed.

Treatment Outcome with High versus low-to-moderate Dosing of Corticosteroids in Early vis-a-vis Late-onset Hypoxic Cases of COVID-19: A Multicentric Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background: Corticosteroid dosing in COVID-19 cases associated with early-onset and late-onset hypoxia have not been separately explored.

Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we divided hypoxic COVID-19 cases into groups based on timing of initiation of corticosteroids relative to onset of symptoms; Group A (≤6th day), Group B (7th-9th day) and Group C (≥10th day), each group being sub-grouped into high and low-to-moderate dose corticosteroid recipients. Cox regression with propensity scoring was used to compare 28-day mortality between high and low-to-moderate dose recipients separately in Group A, Group B, Group C.

Perspectives and early experience on endoscopic stapedotomy from a group of "traditional school" otologists.

This paper evaluates endoscopic stapedotomy from the perspectives of a group of 3 surgeons, each of whose experience in endoscopic and microscopic stapedotomy is 3 years and more than 12 years, respectively. Thirty-four patients clinically diagnosed with stapedial otosclerosis were alternately assigned for unilateral, microscope- and endoscope-assisted stapedotomy following the selection criteria given. Results were evaluated with predetermined epidemiologic, preoperative, perioperative, and postoperative outcome parameters.

Information adequacy of medicine package inserts in India: A critical evaluation.

Objectives: Package inserts (PIs) are used by physicians and other health-care providers as ready source of approved prescribing information. In India, they are subject to statutory regulations that specify the information to be provided under various headings. Uniformity of PIs with optimal level of information is desirable, the absence of which may lead to medication errors.

MicroRNA expression patterns in HbE/β-thalassemia patients: The passwords to unlock fetal hemoglobin expression in β-hemoglobinopathies.

Hemoglobin E (HbE)/β-thalassemia is a form of β-hemoglobinopathy that is well-known for its clinical heterogeneity. Individuals suffering from this condition are often found to exhibit increased fetal hemoglobin (HbF) levels - a factor that may contribute to their reduced blood transfusion requirements. This study hypothesized that the high HbF levels in HbE/β-thalassemia individuals may be guided by microRNAs and explored their involvement in the disease pathophysiology.

Determinants of out-of-pocket and catastrophic health expenditure in rural population: A community-based study in a block of Purba Barddhaman, West Bengal.

A new method of recording attendance improves the academic performance of medical students.

Introduction: Students' engagement during the collection of attendance (SEdCA) is a method where students write the answer to a question related to the topic of preceding 1-h lecture. Then, attendance is recorded by the teacher from the answer sheets. This method was introduced primarily to overcome difficulty in recording attendance from a class of high attendance.
