The inclusion of students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in mainstream education (primary and secondary, in the range of 4-5 to 8-10 years old) is a complex task that has long challenged both educators and health professionals. However, the correct use of digital technologies such as personalization settings and interaction with robots has clearly shown how these new technologies can benefit ASD students. However, it is essential to characterize the profile, problems, and needs of each student, since it is not possible to generalize an accessible approach for all users.

  • The study investigated the effects of an 8-week cognitive-motor training program on postural control and knee proprioception in older adults, involving 20 participants divided into two groups.
  • Both experimental and control groups improved in postural control and proprioception after the training, but no significant differences were found between them or concerning the cognitive task.
  • While music was included in the experimental group's sessions, it did not lead to any significant benefits over the control group's training without music.

: This study aimed to analyze the impact of seated, 45° inclined, and supine positions on respiratory muscle strength (Maximal Inspiratory Pressure-MIP, Maximal Expiratory Pressure-MEP, Sniff Nasal Inspiratory Pressure-SNIP and Sniff Nasal Expiratory Pressure-SNEP) and the electrical activity of respiratory muscles in healthy adults. Ten healthy subjects were evaluated. : Personal, anthropometric data (weight, height, BMI) and lung function (spirometry) were collected, followed by random assessments of inspiratory (MIP, SNIP) and expiratory (MEP, SNEP) muscle strength.

Experimental research has uncovered lipocalin 2 (LCN2) as a novel biomarker implicated in the modulation of intestinal inflammation, metabolic homeostasis, and colon carcinogenesis. However, evidence from human research has been scant. We, therefore, explored the association of pre-diagnostic circulating LCN2 concentrations with incident colorectal cancer (CRC) in a nested case-control study within the in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort.

The Behavior Problem Inventory-Short Form: Psychometric Properties in a Spanish Sample of Intellectual Disabilities.

J Appl Res Intellect Disabil

January 2025

Facultat de Psicologia, Ciències de l'Educació i de l'Esport, Blanquerna, Ramon Llull University, Barcelona, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to validate the Behavior Problems Inventory-Short Form (BPI-S) for people with intellectual disabilities in Spain, addressing the lack of assessment tools in the region.
  • The research involved 458 individuals and 137 professionals, confirming the scale's validity and reliability, with a three-factor model identified.
  • Results showed significant correlations between problem behaviors and maladaptive behaviors, leading to a refined 28-item scale that proved to have good consistency and validity, but further research is needed to develop clinical norms.

  • * 1360 older adults (65+) from four European countries participated, comparing three groups: ERS with SMS, ERS alone, and a control group.
  • * While increases in functional capacity were noted after four months favoring the ERS-SMS group, these differences were minimal and not maintained in the long term, suggesting that the benefits of adding SMS were uncertain.

Background: Chronic painful temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a functional pain syndrome that embodies a spectrum of clinical manifestations and expresses great complexity through the coexistence of multiple comorbidities.

Objective: Evaluate the prevalence of pain comorbidities, explore the correlation between comorbidities, kinesiophobia, catastrophizing, and pain disability at baseline, and determine variables of interest for prediction response to physiotherapy interventions at different follow-up times.

Methods: This is a secondary analysis of a previously conducted randomized controlled trial (RCT).

  • - Load monitoring through inertial movement units (IMUs) is crucial for optimizing training and reducing injury risk in basketball.
  • - The study found that games with frequent possession changes, like steals and turnovers, require more physical effort from players, while longer games lead to increased recovery time.
  • - Key players, especially those who shoot often, experience higher physical demands, highlighting the value of IMUs in analyzing player performance and encouraging a deeper understanding of game dynamics.

The development of accurate predictions for a new drug's absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion profiles in the early stages of drug development is crucial due to high candidate failure rates. The absence of comprehensive, standardised, and updated pharmacokinetic (PK) repositories limits pre-clinical predictions and often requires searching through the scientific literature for PK parameter estimates from similar compounds. While text mining offers promising advancements in automatic PK parameter extraction, accurate Named Entity Recognition (NER) of PK terms remains a bottleneck due to limited resources.

  • There is a significant need for standardized tools tailored to assess functional communication disorders in Spanish and Catalan populations, particularly for individuals with aphasia.
  • The study focuses on adapting the Communication Activities of Daily Living 3rd edition (CADL-3) into two versions: European Spanish (CADL-3VE) and Catalan (CADL-3VC), with testing conducted on 152 participants in Catalonia.
  • The results indicate that both new versions of the test are reliable, strongly correlate with external criteria, and effectively differentiate between patients with aphasia and control groups, aiding in creating personalized treatment plans.

The demand for novel tissue grafting and regenerative wound care biomaterials is growing as traditional options often fall short in biocompatibility, functional integration with human tissue, associated cost(s), and sustainability. Salmon aquaculture generates significant volumes of waste, offering a sustainable opportunity for biomaterial production, particularly in osteo-conduction/-induction, and de novo clinical/surgical bone regeneration. Henceforth, this study explores re-purposing salmon waste through a standardized pre-treatment process that minimizes the biological content, followed by a treatment stage to remove proteins, lipids, and other compounds, resulting in a mineral-rich substrate.

Emotional Reactions of Professionals to Challenging Behaviors in People with Intellectual and Developmental Disability.

Behav Sci (Basel)

August 2024

Facultat de Psicologia, Ciències de l'Educació i de l'Esport, Blanquerna, Ramon Llull University, 08022 Barcelona, Spain.

Professionals working with people with intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) can be exposed to challenging behaviors (CBs), which may result in professionals exhibiting emotional reactions that can impact their practices. This study examined these reactions and analyzed how they are influenced by the individual characteristics of people with IDD (gender, age, and level of IDD) and the variables related to CB (type of behavior and its frequency and behavioral function). A total of 125 professionals assessed 293 people with IDD who exhibited CBs.

Electronic address:

Objectives: The evidence on water intake in the prevention of kidney function decline is scarce at population level in well-being individuals at high cardiovascular risk. Therefore, we aimed to longitudinally evaluate the associations between total water intake and subtypes and kidney function, through estimated-Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR).

Methods: Three-year prospective analysis conducted in 1986 older adults (aged 55-75 year) with overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome from the PREDIMED-Plus study.

Introduction: Various pathophysiological contexts can be accompanied by weakness, arthrogenic muscle inhibition, and even disability. In this scenario, peripheral nerve stimulation has been studied not only for pain management but also for the improvement of neuromuscular parameters. For this purpose, the use of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) has typically been investigated, but recently, the use of ultrasound-guided percutaneous peripheral nerve stimulation (pPNS) has gained popularity.

Background: Spasticity is the most common motor disorder in cerebral palsy (CP), and its management is complex, posing a significant challenge for the rehabilitation team. Radial extracorporeal shock wave therapy (rESWT) has emerged in recent years as an effective, non-invasive, and low-risk alternative for the management of spasticity in CP patients, with only minor side effects such as small bruises or discomfort during application. There is great variability in rESWT administration protocols, ranging from a single session up to the 12 sessions.
