Matched unrelated donor stem cell transplantation (MUD-SCT) provides the only curative option for patients with follicular lymphoma (FL) who fail conventional therapies and do not have a sibling donor. The purpose of this study was to analyse the outcome of patients with FL treated with MUD-SCT included in the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation registry. 131 patients treated with reduced-intensity conditioning (RIC, n = 87) or conventional myeloablative (CONV, n = 44) MUD-SCT between 2000 and 2005 were included.

The cure rate of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) in adults remains unsatisfactory. The remarkable progress in childhood ALL has not been replicated in adult ALL and approximately two thirds of patients younger than 60 years, and more than 90% of those over 60 years, are expected to succumb to their disease. Over 80% of adults can achieve a complete remission; however, the majority of such patients relapse.

The graft-versus-leukaemia effect is one of the most important biological effects to influence outcome in patients with acute leukaemia. The recognition of this modality over the past three decades has led to far-reaching changes in the concept and conduct of allogeneic transplantation in acute myeloid leukaemia, and in the infusion of donor lymphocytes as a therapeutic modality. Despite these conceptual advances, there is a considerable need for more structured prospective studies to optimally define the role of reduced-intensity transplantation in both acute myeloid and acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

We present a 28-year-old woman with mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) complicated by a recalcitrant longstanding leg ulcer, which responded to complex therapy with local polydine, systemic ciprofloxacin, iloprost, enoxaparin and aspirin. Cyclophosphamide pulse therapy and corticosteroids controlled the systemic inflammation but failed to heal the leg ulcer. We considered a rationale of complex therapy for the leg ulcer on a basis of pathogenesis and complications of MCTD.

Objective: We present a possible negative side effect of a sudden onset of secretory otitis media in a 12-year-old boy with unilateral cleft lip and palate who underwent maxillary expansion. The secretory otitis media caused a temporary hearing loss developed during the activation of the expander appliance. The possible causes for this complication are discussed.
