Epithelial RANKL Limits Experimental Periodontitis via Langerhans Cells.

J Dent Res

November 2024

Institute of Biomedical and Oral Research, Faculty of Dental Medicine, Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Israel.

Article Synopsis
  • - RANKL is identified as a key player in periodontitis, primarily influencing osteoclast differentiation and acting as a link between bone and the immune system, showcasing a complex role beyond its initial recognition as an activator of dendritic cells (DCs).
  • - In studies using ligature-induced periodontitis (LIP), rapid bone loss was observed, which eventually stopped despite the presence of the ligature, indicating a connection to immunosuppressive conditions in the gingiva associated with T regulatory (Treg) cell expansion.
  • - Experiments with K14-RANKL mice, which overexpress RANKL in gingival cells, revealed that increased RANKL leads to a favorable balance of immune cells

Plast Reconstr Surg Glob Open

September 2023

From the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Rambam Medical Center, Haifa, Israel.

Background: Facial asymmetry includes several etiologies, among them trauma to the condylar area during early childhood and congenital malformations such as hemifacial microsomia. This article describes the management of facial asymmetry in adolescents and young adults using a mandible first approach by distraction osteogenesis, followed by maxillary Le-Fort I as a second stage.

Methods: Eighteen patients 14-25 years of age presented with unilateral hypoplasia of the jaws which manifested clinically by deviation of the chin and canting of the occlusal plane.

Kluri Anomaly: Newly Introduced Pancreatic Duct Anomaly.

J Med Cases

October 2022

Department of General Surgery, HepatoPancreatoBiliary Surgical Unit, Rambam Medical Care Center, Haifa, Israel.

Anomalies of the pancreas organ, especially congenital anomalies, are very uncommon, and can involve the pancreatic ductal as well as the pancreatic extra-ductal systems. While these anomalies usually present as an incidental radiological finding during adulthood, sometimes, they can present as recurrent upper abdominal pain as a presentation of recurrent episodes of acute idiopathic pancreatitis. Thus, these anomalies should be regarded in the differential diagnosis list, as a cause, for recurrent idiopathic pancreatitis, especially in the adult age group of patients.

Retroperitoneal tumors (RPTs) are very rare tumors that arise in the large space of the retroperitoneum. About two-third of these tumors are malignant, of which soft tissue sarcoma (STS) is the most common and comprises almost one-third of malignant RPTs. Twenty to thirty percent of RPTs are benign.

Early antitumor activity of oral Langerhans cells is compromised by a carcinogen.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

January 2022

Institute of Biomedical and Oral Research, Faculty of Dental Medicine, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Jerusalem 9112102, Israel;

Early diagnosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) remains an unmet clinical need. Therefore, elucidating the initial events of OSCC preceding tumor development could benefit OSCC prognosis. Here, we define the Langerhans cells (LCs) of the tongue and demonstrate that LCs protect the epithelium from carcinogen-induced OSCC by rapidly priming αβT cells capable of eliminating γH2AX epithelial cells, whereas γδT and natural killer cells are dispensable.

Background: Limited bone quality in the posterior maxilla results in low success rates for dental implants. Various bone augmentation methods have been described, yet most require two-step surgical procedures with relatively high rates of resorption and failure. An alternative for these patients is zygomatic implants.

Treatment of Facial Deformities using 3D Planning and Printing of Patient-Specific Implants.

J Vis Exp

May 2020

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Rambam Medical Care Center; Ruth & Bruce Rappaport Faculty of Medicine, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology.

Technological advancements in surgical planning and patient-specific implants are constantly evolving. One can either adopt the technology to achieve better results, even in the less experienced hand, or continue without it. As technology develops and becomes more user-friendly, we believe it is time to allow the surgeon the option to plan his/her operations and create his/her own patient-specific surgical guides and fixation plates allowing him full control over the process.

The Influence of Mandibular Gonial Angle on Fracture Site.

J Oral Maxillofac Surg

August 2020

Department Head, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Rambam Medical Care Center, Haifa, Israel, and Ruth & Bruce Rappaport Faculty of Medicine, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel.

Purpose: The mandibular angle is influenced by multiple codependent morphologic dynamic factors, such as osseous anatomy, forces exerted by the muscles of mastication, occlusal loading patterns, and anatomic structures. These factors can influence the presence of a fracture in this area. Our research aimed to investigate a potential correlation between the risk of angle fractures and age, gender, fracture etiology, gonial angle size, presence of mandibular third molars, or presence of occlusal support.

Bone deficiency is the major obstacle in implant dentistry. Guided bone regeneration (GBR) with particulate bone and barrier membranes has been the primary surgical technique used to regenerate alveolar bone for dental implant therapy. This procedure has been used in implant dentistry for more than 30 years and continues to be developed and refined for more predictable surgical outcomes.

Sandwich osteotomy for the reconstruction of deficient alveolar bone.

Int J Oral Maxillofac Surg

October 2018

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Rambam Medical Care Center, Haifa, Israel. Electronic address:

Alveolar bone deficiency is a very common problem encountered by the practitioner when planning dental implants. The severity of the deficiency is variable. Many practitioners perform augmentation using the method they feel comfortable with and do not necessarily use the most appropriate method.

Distraction osteogenesis for the augmentation of severe alveolar bone deficiency has gained popularity during the past two decades. In cases where the vertical bone height is not sufficient to create a stable transport segment, performing alveolar distraction osteogenesis (ADO) is not possible. In these severe cases, a two-stage treatment protocol is suggested: onlay bone grafting followed by ADO.
