Purpose: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of sealed implantation, a simple technique for implanting foldable intraocular lenses (IOLs).
Methods: This was a retrospective study including consecutive patients who underwent phacoemulsification cataract using the sealed implantation technique. Sealed implantation is a technique in which a single-piece, foldable IOL is implanted without an intraocular ophthalmic viscosurgical device (OVD) or continuous infusion (hydroimplantation) of balanced saline solution (BSS).

Extramammary Paget’s disease is a rare intraepithelial malignant condition affecting the apocrine gland-bearing skin. In this case, a genomic alteration, ERBB2 S310F mutation, was discovered. The ERBB2 S310F mutation seems to be a transforming mutation that should be targeted with anti-HER2 drugs.

Li-Fraumeni syndrome is a cancer predisposition syndrome associated with a variety of neoplasms, mainly soft tissue sarcoma, premenopausal breast cancer, brain tumors, adrenocortical carcinoma, and leukemia. Esophageal leiomyomatosis involves the presence of several rare benign neoplastic lesions composed of proliferating smooth muscle cells in the esophageal wall. The current case report presents a patient with recurrent diffuse leiomyomas of the esophagus and confirmed p53 mutation with clinical criteria of Li-Fraumenilike syndrome.

Heparanase that was cloned from and is abundant in the placenta is implicated in cell invasion, tumor metastasis, and angiogenesis. Recently we have demonstrated that heparanase may also affect the hemostatic system in a non-enzymatic manner. Heparanase was shown to up-regulate tissue factor (TF) expression and interact with tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI) on the cell surface, leading to dissociation of TFPI from the cell membrane of endothelial and tumor cells, resulting in increased cell surface coagulation activity.

In the setting of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), patients at high risk of systemic emboli who undergo primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) using stents might require triple antithrombotic therapy (a combination of aspirin, thienopyridine, and vitamin K antagonist [VKA]). The risks and benefits of such therapy in the setting of STEMI have been incompletely characterized. We, therefore, assessed the outcomes of patients who received triple therapy after primary PCI in the large-scale, contemporary Harmonizing Outcomes with Revascularization and Stents in Acute Myocardial Infarction [HORIZONS-AMI] trial.

Development of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN), ie, a rise in serum creatinine by either ≥0.5 mg/dL or by ≥25% from baseline within the first 2-3 days after contrast administration, is strongly associated with both increased inhospital and late morbidity and mortality after invasive cardiac procedures. The prevention of CIN is critical if long-term outcomes are to be optimized after percutaneous coronary intervention.

Acute coronary syndromes (ACS) are the leading cause of mortality and one of the main reasons for hospital admissions in the developed nations. Due to high rates of mortality and reinfarction, ACS represent a major public health concern. Platelets play a central role in atherothrombosis, the main pathologic substrate in ACS.

Background: The ability to perform a simultaneous analysis of ventricular and atrial volumes may provide clinically useful information for diagnosis and prognosis. We aimed to evaluate the feasibility and clinical value of a novel algorithm that performs fully automatic evaluation of the four cardiac chambers and myocardium from gated CT datasets.
Methods: 50 patients were studied-Group 1: 30 consecutive unselected patients, Group 2A: 10 patients after myocardial infarction and Group 2B: 10 normal controls.
