For mean-field classical spin systems exhibiting a second-order phase transition in the stationary state, we obtain within the corresponding phase-space evolution according to the Vlasov equation the values of the critical exponents describing power-law behavior of response to a small external field. The exponent values so obtained significantly differ from the ones obtained on the basis of an analysis of the static phase-space distribution, with no reference to dynamics. This work serves as an illustration that cautions against relying on a static approach, with no reference to the dynamical evolution, to extract critical exponent values for mean-field systems.

Inspired by one-dimensional light-particle systems, the dynamics of a non-Hamiltonian system with long-range forces is investigated. While the molecular dynamics does not reach an equilibrium state, it may be approximated in the thermodynamic limit by a Vlasov equation that does possess stable stationary solutions. This implies that on a macroscopic scale the molecular dynamics evolves on a slow timescale that diverges with the system size.

We designed a set of 580 simple sequence repeat markers; 506 from transcription factor-coding genes, and 74 from long non-coding RNAs and designated them as regulatory gene-derived simple sequence repeat (ReG-SSR) markers. From this set, we could anchor 559 ReG-SSR markers on 15 flax chromosomes with an average marker distance of 0.56 Mb.

We introduce and implement an importance-sampling Monte Carlo algorithm to study systems of globally coupled oscillators. Our computational method efficiently obtains estimates of the tails of the distribution of various measures of dynamical trajectories corresponding to states occurring with (exponentially) small probabilities. We demonstrate the general validity of our results by applying the method to two contrasting cases: the driven-dissipative Kuramoto model, a paradigm in the study of spontaneous synchronization; and the conservative Hamiltonian mean-field model, a prototypical system of long-range interactions.

We study the dynamics of overdamped Brownian particles diffusing in conservative force fields and undergoing stochastic resetting to a given location at a generic space-dependent rate of resetting. We present a systematic approach involving path integrals and elements of renewal theory that allows us to derive analytical expressions for a variety of statistics of the dynamics such as (i) the propagator prior to first reset, (ii) the distribution of the first-reset time, and (iii) the spatial distribution of the particle at long times. We apply our approach to several representative and hitherto unexplored examples of resetting dynamics.

A relativistic study of spectroscopic properties of the endohedral fullerenes Ng@C (where Ng = He, Ne and q=0,±1,±2 are the charges) associated with the C molecule has been done using the equation of motion coupled cluster (EOM-CC) methodology. Specific properties estimated are the transition energies, dipole oscillator strengths, and transition probabilities for the low-lying excitations 1s(S) → 1snp (P) (n = 2, 3, 4) for He@C and 1s2s2p (S) → 1s2s2pns∕nd (P) (n = 3, 4) for Ne@C, which have been compared with those for the isolated atom to depict the confinement effect of the host molecule on the encapsulated atom. This is accomplished by introducing an effective potential to the atomic Hamiltonian induced by the fullerene moiety and its charge.

The influence of electron doping on semimetallic SrFBiS has been investigated by means of resistivity, zero and transverse  -  field (ZF/TF) muon spin relaxation/rotation (μSR) experiments. SrFBiS is semimetallic in its normal state and small amounts of La doping results in bulk superconductivity at 2.8 K, at ambient pressure.

Cross-species transferability is a quick and economic method to enrich SSR database, particularly for minor crops where little genomic information is available. Capsule formation and asymbiotic seed germination in some hybrids of Phalaenopsis, influenced by pollination season and capsule maturity.

We explored the influence of pollination season and maturity of capsule on post-pollination capsule formation and in vitro asymbiotic seed germination, respectively. Three Phalaenopsis orchid hybrids, namely, 'Athens', 'Moscow' and 'Lusaka' flowers were artificially self-pollinated during winter, spring, summer and fall seasons and the impact of the pollination seasons was evident during capsule formation. It was observed that winter was the most suitable season for pollination of all the three Phalanaeopsis hybrids resulting in 80-88 % capsule formation.

A three-stranded DNA with short range base pairings only is known to exhibit a classical analog of the quantum Efimov effect, viz., a three-chain bound state at the two-chain melting point where no two are bound. By using a nonperturbative renormalization-group method for a rigid duplex DNA and a flexible third strand, with base pairings and strand exchange, we show that the Efimov-DNA is associated with a limit cycle type behavior of the flow of an effective three-chain interaction.

Unlabelled: Using 108 petroleum contaminated soil samples, this pilot study proposed a new analytical approach of combining visible near-infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (VisNIR DRS) and portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (PXRF) for rapid and improved quantification of soil petroleum contamination. Results indicated that an advanced fused model where VisNIR DRS spectra-based penalized spline regression (PSR) was used to predict total petroleum hydrocarbon followed by PXRF elemental data-based random forest regression was used to model the PSR residuals, it outperformed (R(2)=0.78, residual prediction deviation (RPD)=2.

Growth parameters like root length, shoot length and plant biomass were measured after 12 days of exposure to six different levels of saline solution (with electrical conductivity of 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 or 14 dS m (-1)). Genotypes showing significant interaction and differential response towards salinity were assessed at molecular level using 11 simple sequence repeats (SSR) markers, linked with salt tolerance quantitative trait loci.

We present an experimental determination of the 2p3d(1Po)→1s3d(1De) x-ray line emitted from He-like Si, S, and Cl projectile ions, excited in collisions with thin carbon foils, using a high-resolution bent-crystal spectrometer. A good agreement between the observation and state-of-the-art relativistic calculations using the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock formalism including the Breit interaction and QED effects implies the dominance of fluorescent decay over the autoionization process for the 2p3d(^{1}P^{o}) state of He-like heavy ions. This is the first observation of the fluorescence-active doubly excited states in He-like Si, S, and Cl ions.

The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of using visible near-infrared (VisNIR) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) as an easy, inexpensive, and rapid method to predict compost enzymatic activity, which traditionally measured by fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis (FDA-HR) assay. Compost samples representative of five different compost facilities were scanned by DRS, and the raw reflectance spectra were preprocessed using seven spectral transformations for predicting compost FDA-HR with six multivariate algorithms. Although principal component analysis for all spectral pretreatments satisfactorily identified the clusters by compost types, it could not separate different FDA contents.

Fifty-five compost samples were collected and scanned as received by visible and near-IR (VisNIR, 350-2500 nm) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The raw reflectance and first-derivative spectra were used to predict log(10)-transformed organic matter (OM) using partial least squares (PLS) regression, penalized spline regression (PSR), and boosted regression trees (BRTs). Incorporating compost pH, moisture percentage, and electrical conductivity as auxiliary predictors along with reflectance, both PLS and PSR models showed comparable cross-validation r(2) and validation root-mean-square deviation (RMSD).

Visible near-infrared (VisNIR) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) is a rapid, non-destructive method for sensing the presence and amount of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) contamination in soil. This study demonstrates the feasibility of VisNIR DRS to be used in the field to proximally sense and then map the areal extent of TPH contamination in soil. More specifically, we evaluated whether a combination of two methods, penalized spline regression and geostatistics could provide an efficient approach to assess spatial variability of soil TPH using VisNIR DRS data from soils collected from an 80 ha crude oil spill in central Louisiana, USA.
