A prospective cohort study to investigate the transmission and burden of in Sri Lanka.

Microb Genom

December 2024

Division of Clinical Medicine, School of Medicine and Population Health, The University of Sheffield, Sheffield, UK.

Methicillin-resistant (MRSA) is a common cause of infection in both community and healthcare settings, and the household may be a central component linking these two environments. Strategies to prevent transmission and thereby reduce the risk of infection must be informed by a detailed understanding of local epidemiology. These data are typically lacking in many low- and middle-income countries.

Intentional and unintentional pesticide poisoning is an important public health problem, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Individuals who have been exposed to toxic pesticides, particularly organophosphorus insecticides, need early treatment. Atropine autoinjector devices offer a potential solution, allowing storage of effective treatment near agricultural workers' fields and homes that could be reached within minutes by the worker or fellow villagers to provide first-line emergency care.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers developed a new type of photoanode made from heterojunction nanostructures of InS and MoS to improve efficiency in photoelectrochemical water splitting (PEC-WS).
  • The fabrication involved indium sputtering and sulfurization on indium-doped tin oxide glass, followed by adding 2D MoS nanosheets to enhance visible-light absorption.
  • The resulting photocurrent density was significantly higher than that of the individual materials, attributed to improved light absorption and better separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, making it a promising option for solar energy applications.

  • The study focuses on non-Hardjo isolates of leptospirosis bacteria from human patients in Sri Lanka, revealing their complete genomes, which are less decayed compared to previously analyzed strains.
  • The seven isolates, classified as a novel serovar, showed a lower number of pseudogenes and insertion sequences than earlier Hardjo genomes, indicating a potentially more functional genetic makeup.
  • Findings suggest these Sri Lankan isolates exhibit unique pathogenic traits, including an increased number of specific virulence factor proteins, indicating a need for further research to understand leptospirosis mechanisms.

Mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells represent a unique unconventional T cell population important in eliciting immunomodulatory responses in a range of diseases, including infectious diseases, autoimmunity and cancer. This innate-like T cell subset predominantly express CD8 in humans. Unlike conventional CD8 T cells, which recognize peptide antigen presented by polymorphic major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules, MAIT cells are restricted by MR1, a non-polymorphic antigen-presenting molecule widely expressed in multiple tissues.
