Cacipacoré virus (CPCV) was discovered in 1977 deep in the Amazon rainforest from the blood of a black-faced ant thrush (). As a member of the family Flaviviridae and genus orthoflavivirus, CPCV's intricate ecological association with vectors and hosts raises profound questions. CPCV's transmission cycle may involve birds, rodents, equids, bovines, marsupials, non-human primates, and bats as potential vertebrate hosts, whereas and spp.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate the presence of viral diseases in wild Macaca maura (moor macaques) in Sulawesi Island, focusing on both enteric and non-enteric viruses that could pose health threats to this endangered species.
  • Researchers collected stool samples non-invasively from two social groups of macaques between 2014 and 2016, utilizing techniques like electron microscopy and PCR to identify potential viral infections.
  • Results showed the presence of parvovirus, picornavirus, and calicivirus in the samples, but most PCR tests were negative for other viruses, highlighting the need for further research on zoonotic viruses affecting macaques in this region.

Tick infestation on caimans: a casual tick-host association in the Atlantic rainforest biome?

Exp Appl Acarol

Laboratório Interdisciplinar de Anfíbios e Répteis, Department of Biology, Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco, Recife, PE, Brazil.

Ticks are parasites of birds, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles, but information about tick communities that parasitize reptiles in the Neotropical region is still fragmentary. In the present study, we assessed the presence of ticks on broad-snouted caimans (Caiman latirostris) and Cuvier's dwarf caimans (Paleosuchus palpebrosus) trapped in the Atlantic rainforest biome in Pernambuco state, north-eastern Brazil, to determine which tick species feed on these animals and how frequent or rare this parasite-wildlife association is. We also report an occasional finding of Amblyomma rotundatum on a smooth-fronted caiman (Paleosuchus trigonatus) in the Amazon biome in Pará state, northern Brazil.

Genome Sequence of a Divergent Avian Metapneumovirus from a Monk Parakeet ().

Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, University of California, San Francisco, California, USA

Here, we report the coding-complete genome sequence of an avian metapneumovirus from a monk parakeet (), identified by metagenomic next-generation sequencing during an investigation into a disease outbreak in a captive parrot breeding facility. Based on divergence from known strains, this sequence represents a new subgroup of avian metapneumovirus.

Infectious diseases can cause deleterious effects on bird species, leading to population decline and extinction. Haemosporidia can be recognized by their negative effects on host fitness, including reproductive success and immune responses. In captivity, outbreaks of haemosporidian infection have been observed in birds in zoos and aviaries.

March 2002

CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems and the Rainforest Cooperative Research Centre, CSIRO Tropical Forest Research Centre, Atherton, Queensland, Australia.

Objective: To examine the use of medetomidine for the sedation of captive and wild cassowaries (Casuarius casuarius).

Design: Clinical evaluation after administration of medetomidine by IM injection.

Procedure: Nine captive and two wild birds were chemically restrained, with the drug being administered by dart to 10 birds and hand injected to one.
