Long-term results and surgical strategy development for degenerative disease treatment in athletes: a retrospective single-center study.

Purpose: To analyze of the results of spine surgical treatment of athletes with lumbar degenerative disease and development of a surgical strategy based on the preoperative symptoms and radiological changes in the lumbar spine.

Methods: For 114 athletes with lumbar degenerative disease were included in the present study. Four independent groups were studied: (1) microsurgical/endoscopic discectomy (n = 35); (2) PRP therapy in facet joints (n = 41); (3) total disc replacement (n = 11); (4) lumbar interbody fusion (n = 27).

Associations of long-term exposure to air pollution and noise with body composition in children and adults: Results from the LEAD general population study.

Background: Depression is a prevalent issue among older adults, affecting their quality of life and overall well-being. Exercise is an effective means of relieving depressive symptoms in older adults, but the optimal dose for different exercise types remains unclear. As such, the aim of this meta-analysis was to examine the dose-response relationship between overall and specific types of exercise with depression symptoms in older adults.

Bempegaldesleukin Plus Nivolumab Versus Sunitinib or Cabozantinib in Previously Untreated Advanced Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma: A Phase III Randomized Study (PIVOT-09).

Purpose: Bempegaldesleukin (BEMPEG) is a pegylated interleukin (IL)-2 cytokine prodrug engineered to provide controlled and sustained activation of the clinically validated IL-2 pathway, with the goal of preferentially activating and expanding effector CD8 T cells and natural killer cells over immunosuppressive regulator T cells in the tumor microenvironment. The open-label, phase III randomized controlled PIVOT-09 trial investigated the efficacy and safety of BEMPEG plus nivolumab (NIVO) as first-line treatment for advanced/metastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) with intermediate-/poor-risk disease.

Methods: Patients with previously untreated advanced/metastatic ccRCC were randomly assigned (1:1) to BEMPEG plus NIVO, or investigator's choice of tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI; sunitinib or cabozantinib).

Methods: The observational, cross-sectional study was conducted from September 2021 to September 2022 at the Department of Chemical Pathology, Pakistan Railway Hospital, Rawalpindi, Pakistan and comprised recently-diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. Recorded data included age, gender, vitals, diabetes duration, body mass index and other pertinent demographic and clinical information.

Exploring the Potential of an Eye Tissue Donor Reporting App in Enhancing the Procurement of Corneal Donors: Mixed Methods Observational Study.

Background: The availability of donated eye tissue saves and enhances vision in transplant recipients; however, the current demand for tissue surpasses the available supply. Corneal donor shortages lead to increased wait times, delayed surgeries, prolonged visual impairment, and increased inconvenience to patients requiring eye tissue transplantation. A web-based application was previously developed to facilitate easy and intuitive submission of potential donor information.

Anisolymphocytosis: A clue for Richter transformation.

When chronic lymphocytic leukemia progressed to Richter syndrome, the coexistence of small and large lymphocytes was observed as a bone marrow finding. We consider this finding to be a clue for the progression of chronic lymphocytic leukemia to Richter syndrome.

Development and Validation of SCACOMS, a Composite Scale for Assessing Disease Progression and Treatment Effects in Spinocerebellar Ataxia.

Spinocerebellar ataxias (SCA) are rare inherited neurodegenerative disorders characterized by a progressive impairment of gait, balance, limb coordination, and speech. There is currently no composite scale that includes multiple aspects of the SCA experience to assess disease progression and treatment effects. Applying the method of partial least squares (PLS) regression, we developed the Spinocerebellar Ataxia Composite Scale (SCACOMS) from two SCA natural history datasets (NCT01060371, NCT02440763).

Madecassoside, a triterpenoid saponin compound mainly isolated from the gotu kola herb (), shows an extensive range of biological activities, including antiapoptotic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, moisturizing, neuroprotective, and wound healing effects. It has been highly used in the management of eczema, skin wounds, and other diseases. Due to poor oral bioavailability, membrane permeability, and intestinal absorption, the clinical application of the madecassoside is limited.

Mechanisms of tumor immunosuppressive microenvironment formation in esophageal cancer.

As a highly invasive malignancy, esophageal cancer (EC) is a global health issue, and was the eighth most prevalent cancer and the sixth leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide in 2020. Due to its highly immunogenic nature, emer-ging immunotherapy approaches, such as immune checkpoint blockade, have demonstrated promising efficacy in treating EC; however, certain limitations and challenges still exist. In addition, tumors may exhibit primary or acquired resistance to immunotherapy in the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME); thus, understanding the TIME is urgent and crucial, especially given the im-portance of an immunosuppressive microenvironment in tumor progression.

Integrative Approaches for the Diagnosis and Management of Erosive Oral Lichen Planus.

Erosive oral lichen planus (EOLP) represents a significant challenge in dental and medical management due to its chronic inflammatory nature, painful symptoms, and impact on quality of life. This study aims to evaluate the current diagnostic approach with novel non-invasive techniques, such as dermoscopy, and also the landscape of treatment options for EOLP, focusing on its efficacy, safety, and the challenges that it present in clinical practice. Through a comprehensive literature review, we explored the use of topical corticosteroids, systemic immunosuppressants, biologics, and Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors in treating EOLP, alongside examining patient compliance, psychological impacts, and the risk of adverse effects and recurrence.

COVID-19-induced acute loss of consciousness in Marchiafava-Bignami disease: a case report.

Among the various manifestations of COVID-19, the neurological implications of SARS-CoV-2 infection are of significant concern. Marchiafava-Bignami disease (MBD), a neurodegenerative disorder, exhibits a clinical spectrum ranging from mild progressive dementia in its chronic form to states of acute coma and varied mortality rates. Acute MBD primarily occurs in chronic alcoholics and malnourished individuals and is characterized by sudden loss of consciousness, seizures, confusion, and psychosis.

Noise annoyance due to different sources is associated with tinnitus presence and distress in the general population.

Background: The pathophysiology of tinnitus is not yet fully understood. Although there is a large amount of evidence associating traffic noise exposure with non-auditory health outcomes, there is no evidence regarding the impact of noise annoyance on auditory disorders such as tinnitus.

Objective: Thus, we aimed to investigate the association between noise annoyance due to different sources and tinnitus presence and distress in the general population.

Surgical tactics of two-segmental cervical degenerative diseases: risk factors retrospective assessment and preoperative planning.

Background: Currently, in the specialized literature there are no substantiated clinical and radiological indications for differentiated use of anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) and anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion (ACCF) in the treatment of patients with two-segmental cervical degenerative diseases. The objectives of this study were to (I) identify risk factors that were associated with unsatisfactory results of two-level ACDF and one-level ACCF in the treatment of patients with cervical degenerative diseases despite current perioperative management, and (II) develop a clinical and radiological algorithm for personalized surgical tactics.

Methods: We retrospectively identified risk factors for the development of unsatisfactory clinical postoperative results after two-level ACDF (n=81) and one-level ACCF (n=78), operated in the period of 2009-2019 for two-segmental cervical degenerative disease.

Efficacy and safety of radiofrequency ablation versus surgical sympathectomy in palmar hyperhidrosis.

Cancer-related thrombotic microangiopathy and disseminated intravascular coagulation in a patient with bone marrow carcinomatosis of unknown primary origin: A case report.

Background: Cancer-related thrombotic microangiopathy (CR-TMA) is a rare type of Coombs-negative hemolytic anemia, which is caused by malignancy and has a poor prognosis.

Case: A 76-year-old female was referred to our hospital due to Coombs-negative hemolytic anemia, which was causing fatigue and dyspnea on exertion, accompanied by schistocytosis. A bone marrow examination demonstrated bone marrow carcinomatosis, and the tumor cells were morphologically suspected to be signet-ring cell carcinoma cells.
