We present two patients with active, foul-smelling, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) wounds of the forehead and sternum following craniotomy or open heart surgery. Both had debilitating cataracts and were told by the infectious diseases team that cataract surgery is very risky. Both underwent sequential bilateral phacoemulsification with no sign of infection.

Background: Epithelial and fibrous downgrowths result from persistently leaky wounds with conjunctival or corneal epithelium and fibroblasts growing over corneal endothelium, iris and angle structures, leading to corneal edema and difficult-to-control glaucoma. Therapies have included en bloc resection, cryotherapy, endolaser or external photocoagulation and either 5-fluorouracil or mitomycin C injections. A new complication and a novel therapy are presented.

Oral mucositis is a debilitating manifestation in children undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Children with mucositis should be properly managed in order to prevent further exacerbation and adverse complications. We hereby present the first report of a severe chemotherapy-induced mucositis, plausibly aggravated by improper dental hygiene leading to shedding of the ventral part of the tongue in a child with pre-B acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).

Heterotopic ossification, an entity common in orthopaedic practice frequently involving the hip, knee or other joints, is rarely encountered in abdominal wounds and mesentery. This unusual condition, referred to as mesenteric ossification, is typically associated with intra-abdominal catastrophes. Surgical repair following such catastrophes has always been a challenge as the abdominal wall architecture is frequently distorted by the multiple laparotomies previously performed.

Introduction: This study aimed at determining the clinical safety and efficacy of insulin detemir (IDet) in combination with oral anti-diabetic drugs (OADs) in type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients from four Near East Countries (Israel, Jordan, Pakistan and Lebanon).
Methods: This prospective observational study included T2D patients previously on OADs and newly diagnosed patients initiating IDet with or without OADs, at the discretion of physicians. Safety objectives included evaluation of hypoglycemia and adverse drug reactions (ADRs) from baseline to Week 24.

We present a case of fulminant panuveitis following iris suture fixation of a posterior chamber intraocular lens. We hypothesize that the zonular dehiscence allowed the inflammatory cells in the anterior compartment to gain access to the posterior segment mimicking endophthalmitis or toxic anterior segment syndrome. Also certain bulky lens designs, like the current Rayner hydrophilic acrylic lens, are difficult to manipulate and hold in the optic capture position, and hence the iris fixation of these lenses can be traumatic and lengthy.

Aim: To record ocular vascular events following injections of vascular endothelium growth factor (VEGF) antagonists.
Methods: Collaborative multicenter case series (48 cases), literature reviews (32 cases), and reports to the FDA (64 cases) of patients that had vascular occlusions during anti-VEGF therapy were collected and analyzed.
Results: A total of 144 cases of ocular vascular events were identified, with these diagnosed a median of 15 days after anti-VEGF injection.

Accessory spleens are frequent entities, but their infarction due to arterial stasis caused by segmental portal hypertension is extremely rare. We present this case of a 38-year-old female patient with a three-week history of abdominal pain and an abdominal CT scan revealing a 7 cm mass near the spleen and tail of pancreas with segmental portal hypertension. The patient had no hematologic disease.

Introduction: Disk edema and serous macular detachment in either malignant hypertension or preeclampsia require several weeks to resolve, leaving these young active affected subjects with unilateral or bilateral visual handicap.
Methods: The authors treated two patients with visual loss by sub-Tenon corticosteroid.
Results: Visual improvement occurred within 1 week of the periocular corticosteroid from finger counting at 6 m to 20/70 in a woman with preeclampsia and from bilateral 20/50 to 20/25 in the right eye and 20/20 in the left eye in a man with malignant hypertension.
