Department of Anatomy, Cell Biology and Physiological Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, American University of Beirut, Diana Tamari Sabbagh (DTS) Building, first floor, 117b, P.O. Box 11-0236, Riad El-Solh, Beirut, 1107 2020, Lebanon.

Background: The electroencephalogram (EEG) is a widely used laboratory technique in rodent models of epilepsy, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and other neurological diseases accompanied by seizures. Obtaining prolonged continuous EEG tracings over weeks to months is essential to adequately answer research questions related to the chronobiology of seizure emergence, and to the effect of potential novel treatment strategies. Current EEG recording methods include wired and the more recent but very costly wireless technologies.

Lestaurtinib (CEP-701) modulates the effects of early life hypoxic seizures on cognitive and emotional behaviors in immature rats.

Epilepsy Behav

March 2019

Department of Anatomy, Cell biology and Physiological Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, American University of Beirut, Beirut, Lebanon; Division of Child Neurology, Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, American University of Beirut Medical Center, Beirut, Lebanon. Electronic address:

Hypoxic encephalopathy of the newborn is a major cause of long-term neurological sequelae. We have previously shown that CEP-701 (lestaurtinib), a drug with an established safety profile in children, attenuates short-term hyperexcitability and tropomyosin-related kinase B (TrkB) receptor activation in a well-established rat model of early life hypoxic seizures (HS). Here, we investigated the potential long-term neuroprotective effects of a post-HS transient CEP-701 treatment.

Community kitchens (CKs) have been recommended as public health strategies with social and nutritional health benefits for low-income participants and their families in different settings. The benefit of CKs in improving the food security status of participants in the context of conflict and displacement is less conclusive. This study aimed to qualitatively explore the impact of CKs on the food security status of community kitchen workers (CWs) and Syrian refugee (SR) families in Lebanon.

Objective: This study aimed to provide normative data for four trials of the Rey figure Test - a complex design used to assess visuoconstructional abilities, aspects of visual memory, and aspects of executive functioning. Despite its frequent clinical and research use in the Arab region, published studies regarding the measures' adaptation or normative data remain absent.

Method: We administered the Rey figure on a convenience sample of Lebanese (n = 254) aged 30 years to 99.

Aim: To describe the design of a randomised controlled trial conducted to evaluate a culturally tailored, nurse-led educational intervention.

Background: Self-care strategies are critical to improving health outcomes in heart failure. The family unit is crucial in collectivist cultures, but little is known about involving the family in the self-care of patients with heart failure.

Background: Increasingly there is a focus on self-care strategies for both malignant and non-malignant conditions. Models of self-care interventions have focussed on the individual and less on the broader context of family and society. In many societies, decision-making and health seeking behaviours, involve family members.

Background: While population aging challenges Arab governments to ensure well-being in old age, knowledge translation is gaining support worldwide in evidence-based policymaking and service provision. This study examines the status of existing knowledge translation efforts of aging-related research in Arab countries and evaluates the additional role that institutional arrangements (such as ministry departments, national committees, etc.) play in the relationship between knowledge creation and social and health policies and programs.

May 2014

Rafic Hariri School of Nursing, American University of Beirut, PO Box 11-0236, Riad El Solh 1107-2020, Beirut, Lebanon. Electronic address:

Objectives: The dearth of data on the role of assessment in higher education formed the two purposes of this study: first, to explore assessment strategies commonly used in nursing education by analyzing the curriculum documents of three baccalaureate nursing programs in Lebanon against Bloom's Taxonomy of learning, and second to unravel issues of instruction and assessment by categorizing data into teacher- and learner-centered strategies.

Design: Content analysis research technique applied to analyze the curriculum documents of three baccalaureate nursing programs in Beirut, Lebanon.

Method: After obtaining IRB approval and consent to access the curriculum documents of the programs, data were analyzed using the content analysis research technique.

The purpose of this qualitative, multiple-case study design was to better understand the influence of the nursing curriculum on clinical judgment development in baccalaureate nursing students and the capacity to provide safe nursing practice in health care settings. A sample of 20 preceptors for new graduate nurses were selected from three hospitals in Lebanon, and curriculum documents of three nursing programs provided data to determine the influence of curriculum on clinical judgment development. The preceptors' responses and curriculum data were triangulated, resulting in identification of strengths and weaknesses in the development of the clinical judgment ability of nursing students.
