MUC1, the transmembrane glycoprotein Mucin 1, is usually found to be overexpressed in a variety of epithelial cancers playing an important role in disease progression. MUC1 isoforms such as MUC1/Y, which lacks the entire variable number of tandem repeat region, are involved in oncogenic processes by enhancing tumour initiation. MUC1/Y is therefore considered a promising target for the identification and treatment of epithelial cancers; but so far, the precise role of MUC1/Y remains to be elucidated.

Thorium has gained notoriety in recent years, as a potential source of nuclear energy, substituting uranium in power plants. Monazite is an important source of thorium, as well of uranium and rare earths elements. Workers involved in the extraction and manipulation of this mineral are occupationally exposed to a range of metal mixtures containing thorium and to ionizing radiation.

One of the key features of good practice in medicine is the doctor-patient communication. Radiation protection standards for radiosynovectomy (RS) is limited. Yttrium-90 is a beta-emitting radioisotope used in RS to treat joint pain from haemophilic arthritis.

The purpose of this paper is to report a set of experimental values of patient and staff doses in a cardiac catheterisation laboratory using the range of radiographic and geometric parameters from routine clinical practice. The data obtained will be available for validation of Monte Carlo calculations and for training purposes. They will also help optimise radiation protection for patients and staff.

Polonium-210 ((210)Po) concentration was quantified in the muscle tissue and organs of two predatory marine fishes (Genypterus brasiliensis and Cynoscion microlepidotus) from Cabo Frio, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The species C. microlepidotus, a benthic carnivore, registered higher (210)Po in its tissue.
