Background: Acta Neurochirurgica (ANCH) and World Neurosurgery (WN), are 2 journals of significant importance in the neurosurgical community and have been associated with international federations. These journals carry a similar impact factor. The difference is the years they have been active (ANCH starting publication in 1973 and WN in 2010).

Aims: Tumour deposits (TDs) are an important prognostic marker in colorectal cancer. However, the classification, and inclusion in staging, of TDs has changed significantly in each tumour-node-metastasis (TNM) edition since their initial description in TNM-5, and terminology remains controversial. Expert consensus is needed to guide the future direction of precision staging.

Heterogeneity in Brain Microstructural Development Following Preterm Birth.

Cereb Cortex

July 2020

Centre for the Developing Brain, Department of Perinatal Imaging and Health, School of Biomedical Engineering and Imaging Sciences, King's College London, London, SE1 7EH, UK.

Preterm-born children are at increased risk of lifelong neurodevelopmental difficulties. Group-wise analyses of magnetic resonance imaging show many differences between preterm- and term-born infants but do not reliably predict neurocognitive prognosis for individual infants. This might be due to the unrecognized heterogeneity of cerebral injury within the preterm group.

Cost-Effectiveness of Urinary Biomarker Panel in Prostate Cancer Risk Assessment.

J Urol

December 2018

Departments of Urologic Surgery and Health Policy, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, Tennessee. Electronic address:

Purpose: SelectMDx (MDxHealth®) is a panel of urinary biomarkers used in conjunction with traditional risk factors to individualize risk prediction for clinically significant prostate cancer. In this study we sought to characterize the effectiveness of SelectMDx in a population of American men with elevated prostate specific antigen.

Materials And Methods: We developed a Markov decision analytical model to simulate the chain of events and downstream outcomes associated with ultrasound guided prostate biopsy and a strategy in which the biomarker panel is implemented prior to biopsy.

Targeted therapies in connective tissue diseases (CTDs) have led to improvements of disease-associated outcomes, but life expectancy remains lower compared to general population due to emerging co-morbidities, particularly due to excess cardiovascular risk. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) is a noninvasive imaging technique which can provide detailed information about multiple cardiovascular pathologies without using ionizing radiation. CMR is considered the reference standard for quantitative evaluation of left and right ventricular volumes, mass and function, cardiac tissue characterization and assessment of thoracic vessels; it may also be used for the quantitative assessment of myocardial blood flow with high spatial resolution and for the evaluation of the proximal coronary arteries.

The Immune Phenotype of Patients with CHARGE Syndrome.

J Allergy Clin Immunol Pract

October 2016

Department of Allergy and Immunology, The Children's Hospital at Westmead, Sydney, Australia.

Background: Recurrent sinopulmonary infections are common in children with CHARGE (Coloboma, Heart disease, choanal Atresia, growth/mental Retardation, Genitourinary malformations, Ear abnormalities) syndrome, but no prospective studies on immune function have been conducted.

Objective: This study aims to examine and compare the immune phenotype of patients with CHARGE syndrome to those with 22q11.2 deletion and healthy controls.

Adolescence marks a critical time when the brain is highly susceptible to pathological insult yet also uniquely amenable to therapeutic intervention. It is during adolescence that the onset of the majority of psychiatric disorders, including substance use disorder (SUDs), occurs. It has been well established that stress, particularly during early development, can contribute to the pathological changes which contribute to the development of SUDs.

Polyglutamine-coding (CAG)n repeat expansions in seven different genes cause spinocerebellar ataxias. Although the size of the expansion is negatively correlated with age at onset, it accounts for only 50-70% of its variability. To find other factors involved in this variability, we performed a regression analysis in 1255 affected individuals with identified expansions (spinocerebellar ataxia types 1, 2, 3, 6 and 7), recruited through the European Consortium on Spinocerebellar Ataxias, to determine whether age at onset is influenced by the size of the normal allele in eight causal (CAG)n-containing genes (ATXN1-3, 6-7, 17, ATN1 and HTT).

Influence of melatonin on fatigue severity in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome and late melatonin secretion.

Eur J Neurol

January 2006

Department of Neurology, Sleep-Wake Disorders and Chronobiology, Hospital De Gelderse Vallei, Ede, and Department of Medical Psychology, Radbound University Medical Centre, Nijmegen, The Netherlands.

The effect of melatonin, a chronobiotic drug, was explored in 29 patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and Dim Light Melatonin onset (DLMO) later than 21.30 hours, reflective of delayed circadian rhythmicity. The patients took 5 mg of melatonin orally, 5 h before DLMO during 3 months.
