Face-to-face communication is not only about 'what' is said but also 'how' it is said, both in speech and bodily signals. Beat gestures are rhythmic hand movements that typically accompany prosodic prominence in conversation. Yet, it is still unclear how beat gestures influence language comprehension.

We conducted a trial to establish efficacy and safety of glepaglutide in reducing parenteral support (PS) needs in SBS patients with intestinal failure (IF).
Methods: In an international, placebo-controlled, randomized, parallel-group, double-blind, phase 3 trial, SBS-IF patients requiring PS ≥3 days/week were randomized 1:1:1 to 24 weeks of glepaglutide 10 mg twice-weekly (TW) or once-weekly (OW), or placebo.

Objective: Parkinson's disease (PD) resting tremor is thought to be initiated in the basal ganglia and amplified in the cerebello-thalamo-cortical circuit. Because stress worsens tremor, the noradrenergic system may play a role in amplifying tremor. We tested if and how propranolol, a non-selective beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist, reduces PD tremor and whether or not this effect is specific to stressful conditions.

Background: Autism is accompanied by highly individualized patterns of neurodevelopmental differences in brain anatomy. This variability makes the neuroanatomy of autism inherently difficult to describe at the group level. Here, we examined inter-individual neuroanatomical differences using a dimensional approach that decomposed the domains of social communication and interaction (SCI), restricted and repetitive behaviors (RRB), and atypical sensory processing (ASP) within a neurodiverse study population.

The combination of different methods has been advocated to increase sensitivity in detecting secondary caries lesions. This cross-sectional study compared the detection of caries lesions around posterior restorations and treatment decisions using bitewing radiographs alone or in combination with clinical information from patient records. The radiographs (n = 212) were randomly distributed into two sequences for assessment across two phases, with a wash-out period of two weeks.

Tetraspanins are four-transmembrane proteins that play fundamental roles in the immune system by enabling processes like migration, proliferation, signaling and protein trafficking. While the importance of cell surface tetraspanins has been established, the function of intracellular tetraspanins is less well understood. Here, we investigated the role of tetraspanin 3 (Tspan3) in lymphocytes.

Background: The various symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) may change differently over time as the disease progresses. Tremor usually manifests early in the disease, but unlike other motor symptoms, its severity may diminish over time. The cerebral mechanisms underlying these symptom-specific longitudinal trajectories are unclear.

Mechanical ventilation, essential for critically ill patients, contrasts with natural respiration, primarily due to differences in pleural pressure ( ). Natural inspiration decreases , pulling the lungs away from the thoracic wall, whereas positive pressure inspiration increases , pushing the lungs against the thoracic wall. This shift has several consequences.

The Urban Heat Island Effect (UHIE) is a globally consistent pressure on biological species living in cities. Adaptation to the UHIE may be necessary for urban wild flora to persist in cities, but experimental evidence is scarce. Here, we report evidence of adaptive evolution in a perennial plant species in response to the UHIE.

The blackening and increased smelling of waterbodies steadily affect urban aquatic ecology. Sulfide is recognized as the key substance responsible for the darkening of urban rivers. However, the pathway of sulfide production and the underling microbial mechanisms in urban rivers are not fully understood.

In molecular beam scattering experiments, an important technique for measuring product energy and angular distributions is velocity map imaging following photoionization of one or more scattered species. For studies with cold molecular beams, the ultimate resolution of such a study is often limited by the product detection process. When state-selective ionization detection is used, excess energy from the ionization step can transfer to kinetic energy in the target molecular ion-electron pair, resulting in measurable cation recoil.

The farnesoid X receptor (FXR) is a nuclear receptor (NR) known to obligately heterodimerize with the retinoid X receptor (RXR). FXR is expressed as four isoforms (α1-α4) that drive transcription from IR-1 (inverted repeat-1) response elements (REs). Recently, we found that FXR isoforms α2/α4 also activate transcription from non-canonical ER-2 (everted repeat-2) REs, mediating most metabolic effects of general FXR activation.

Introduction: Vaccination-related conspiracy ideation is related to reduced compliance with public health advice globally. Such beliefs have previously been linked to the delusion-proneness trait. However, it is not known how this extends to getting vaccinated.

In plants, cytosine DNA methylation (mC) is largely associated with transcriptional repression of transposable elements, but it can also be found in the body of expressed genes, referred to as gene body methylation (gbM). gbM is correlated with ubiquitously expressed genes; however, its function, or absence thereof, is highly debated. The different outputs that mC can have raise questions as to how it is interpreted-or read-differently in these sequence and genomic contexts.

Background: Personal continuity is an important dimension of continuity of care in general practice and is associated with many benefits including a higher quality of GP care and lower mortality rate. Over time, changes in society and health care have challenged the provision of personal continuity. Older patients in particular experience more negative consequences from receiving discontinuous care.

There has been an increasing interest in identifying the biological underpinnings of human time perception, for which purpose research in non-human primates (NHP) is common. Although previous work, based on behaviour, suggests that similar mechanisms support time perception across species, the neural correlates of time estimation in humans and NHP have not been directly compared. In this study, we assess whether brain evoked responses during a time categorization task are similar across species.

Global mitigation strategies are needed to reduce the amount of microplastics reaching our oceans via rivers. However, what strategies will be most effective, and when and where to implement these strategies is unclear. We applied the global water quality model MARINA-Plastics, covering 10,226 sub-basins worldwide, to assess the effects of different emission reduction strategies on microplastic inputs to rivers worldwide over the period 2010-2100, taking time steps of 10 years.

Elevated de novo lipid synthesis is a remarkable adaptation of cancer cells that can be exploited for therapy. However, the role of altered lipid metabolism in the regulation of apoptosis is still poorly understood. Using thermal proteome profiling, we identified Manidipine-2HCl, targeting UGT8, a key enzyme in the synthesis of sulfatides.

Introduction: A minority of addiction patients receive appropriate treatment directly from trained professionals in addiction medicine. Most countries have not recognized addiction medicine (AM) as a specialty in its own right or within psychiatry/other specialties. Therefore, the effectiveness and organization of AM training around the world need to be improved.
