Depression is highly prevalent in nursing homes residents and affects their quality of life. Both prevalence and impact of depression may decrease when effective guidelines or depression care programs are used, but this appears to be a challenging task. The Self Determination Theory postulates that the realization of complex tasks is being facilitated by meeting three basic human psychosocial needs: autonomy, competence and relatedness to others.

Background: The associations of abdominal skeletal muscle mass index (SMI), visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue (VAT and SAT, respectively), and mortality among patients with stage I-III colorectal cancer may differ for men and women, but only few studies stratified their data into men and women. We investigated associations of abdominal SMI, VAT, and SAT with overall mortality among men and among women with stage I-III colorectal cancer.
Methods: SMI, VAT, and SAT were assessed from abdominal CT images for 1,998 patients with stage I-III colorectal cancer diagnosed between 2006 and 2015.

Many students with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) attending higher education drop out prematurely. The predictive value of self-reported daily executive functioning (EF) and (cognitive) performance-based EF (mental flexibility and working memory) for academic progress was evaluated in 54 young adults with ASD (M = 22.5, SD = 2.

Background: Home parenteral nutrition (HPN) is a life-preserving therapy for patients with chronic intestinal failure (CIF) indicated for patients who cannot achieve their nutritional requirements by enteral intake. Intravenously administered lipid emulsions (ILEs) are an essential component of HPN, providing energy and essential fatty acids, but can become a risk factor for intestinal-failure-associated liver disease (IFALD). In HPN patients, major effort is taken in the prevention of IFALD.

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is an effective intervention for Parkinson's disease if drug therapy with dopaminergic medication has become insufficient. Current post-operative care focuses on optimizing the neurostimulator in combination with medication. We believe that the success rate of DBS surgery can be enhanced if more attention is paid to the (psychosocial) adjustment problems of patients and their families.

Background: An important parameter for survival in patients with esophageal carcinoma is lymph node status. The distribution of lymph node metastases depends on tumor characteristics such as tumor location, histology, invasion depth, and on neoadjuvant treatment. The exact distribution is unknown.

In order to better understand which factors play a role in non-adaptive social behavior in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) we looked into physiological arousal and awareness of one's own emotions. Heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) were measured during a public speaking task in 51 young adults with ASD and 28 typically developing (TD) controls. The results showed no significant group differences in baseline HR/HRV, HR reactivity (change from baseline to the speaking task) or self-reported emotional awareness.

Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) have not been comprehensively studied in people with Down syndrome, despite their high risk on dementia. A novel evaluation scale was developed to identify the nature, frequency and severity of behavioral changes (83 behavioral items in 12 clinically defined sections). Central aim was to identify items that change in relation to the dementia status.

Background: In cancer patients with a poor prognosis, low skeletal muscle radiographic density is associated with higher mortality. Whether this association also holds for early-stage cancer is not very clear. We aimed to study the association between skeletal muscle density and overall mortality among early-stage (stage I-III) colorectal cancer (CRC) patients.

Background: Chest compression (CC) research primarily focuses on finding the 'optimum' compression waveform using a variety of compression efficacy metrics. Blood flow is rarely measured systematically with high fidelity. Using a programmable mechanical chest compression device, we studied the effect of inter-compression pauses in a swine model of cardiac arrest, testing the hypothesis that a single 'optimal' CC waveform exists based on measurements of resulting blood flow.

Patients often experience positive (placebo) or negative (nocebo) treatment effects due to the positive or negative expectations they have about the treatment. Placebo and nocebo effects have only relatively recently received attention for itch. Experimental studies indicate that, in line with research in other areas, such as pain, learning via verbal suggestion and conditioning plays a key role in placebo and nocebo effects on itch.

Background: Direct-acting antivirals (DAAa) cure hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections in 95% of infected patients. Modeling studies predict that universal HCV treatment will lead to a decrease in the incidence of new infections but real-life data are lacking. The incidence of HCV among Dutch human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive men who have sex with men (MSM) has been high for >10 years.

Evidence based medicine (EBM) is the integration of the best research evidence, clinical expertise and patient values in the decision making process for patient care. However, elderly people are often excluded from participating in scientific studies and they often have multiple morbidities, which complicates the application of EBM. Shared decision making (SDM), a process where clinicians and patients share the best available evidence when faced with the task of making decisions, and where patients are supported to consider options, to achieve appropriate treatment can help to shape EBM for this group of patients.

This paper describes the development of a guideline on medical research with older subjects. Although our society is aging, evidence on health care for older persons is lacking on many topics, because these subjects are underrepresented in most drug and non-drug trials, while these services are used many older persons, and result in many adverse reactions and unplanned hospitalisation. Part of the reasons for this underrepresentation is the multimorbidity, often leading to exclusion, but also the lack of appropriate research methods plays a major role.

The Netherlands Organisation of Health Research and Development started in 2008 the Dutch National Care for the Elderly Programme (in Dutch abbreviated as NPO) with the aim to improve the quality of life for the frail older people through better quality of care (health, social, community) which is tailored to the needs and wants of older people. The delivery of good care is related with competent professional behaviour which is inextricably linked to the education of professionals. This article presents an overview of 32 educational programmes developed within the NPO.

Autism is generally associated with poor functional outcome but little is known about predictors of quality of life, especially during early adulthood. This study was conducted to assess subjective quality of life during early adulthood in high-functioning autism spectrum disorder and its relation with self-regulating abilities. Individuals with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder who progressed into post-secondary higher education ( N = 75) were compared to a typical peer control group ( N = 28) based on behavioral self-report questionnaires.

Background & Aims: Acute hepatitis C virus infections (AHCV) are prevalent among HIV positive men having sex with men and generally treated with pegylated interferon-alpha (PegIFN) and ribavirin (RBV) during 24weeks. The addition of a protease inhibitor could shorten therapy without loss of efficacy.
Methods: We performed an open-label, single arm study to investigate the efficacy and safety of a 12-week course of boceprevir, PegIFN and RBV for AHCV genotype 1 infections in 10 Dutch HIV treatment centers.

Within the Dutch Acute HCV in HIV Study, a surveillance system was initiated to estimate the incidence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections in 2014. Following the Dutch HIV treatment guidelines, HIV-positive men having sex with men (MSM) in 19 participating centers were screened. Ninety-nine acute HCV infections were reported, which resulted in a mean incidence of 11 per 1000 patient-years of follow-up.

There is an ongoing discussion as to whether there are gender differences in symptom presentation in acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Although the burden of coronary artery disease (CAD) and the underlying mechanisms involved in ACS differ significantly between the genders during various stages of life, researchers seem to persist in comparing women against the standard for male patients. This clouds the discussion, and may be potentially harmful to women.
