Recurrence is a key outcome to evaluate the treatment effect of differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC). However, no consistent definition of recurrence is available in current literature or international guidelines. Therefore, the primary aim of this systematic review was to delineate the definitions of recurrence of DTC, categorized by total thyroidectomy with radioactive iodine ablation (RAI), total thyroidectomy without RAI and lobectomy, to assess if there is a generally accepted definition among these categories.

In the Drug Rediscovery Protocol (DRUP), patients with cancer are treated based on their tumor molecular profile with approved targeted and immunotherapies outside the labeled indication. Importantly, patients undergo a tumor biopsy for whole-genome sequencing (WGS) which allows for a WGS-based evaluation of routine diagnostics. Notably, we observed that not all biopsies of patients with dMMR/MSI-positive tumors as determined by routine diagnostics were classified as microsatellite-unstable by subsequent WGS.

During the COVID-19 pandemic recommendations were made to adapt cancer care. This population-based study aimed to investigate possible differences between the treatment of patients with metastatic cancer before and during the pandemic by comparing the initial treatments in five COVID-19 periods (weeks 1-12 2020: pre-COVID-19, weeks 12-20 2020: 1st peak, weeks 21-41 2020: recovery, weeks 42-53 2020: 2nd peak, weeks 1-20 2021: prolonged 2nd peak) with reference data from 2017 to 2019. The proportion of patients receiving different treatment modalities (chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, immunotherapy or targeted therapy, radiotherapy primary tumor, resection primary tumor, resection metastases) within 6 weeks of diagnosis and the time between diagnosis and first treatment were compared by period.

The human spleen contracts in response to stress-induced catecholamine secretion, resulting in a temporary rise in haemoglobin concentration ([Hb]). Recent findings highlighted enhanced splenic response to exercise at high altitude in Sherpa, possibly due to a blunted splenic response to hypoxia. To explore the potential blunted splenic contraction in Sherpas at high altitude, we examined changes in spleen volume during hyperoxic breathing, comparing acclimatized Sherpa with acclimatized individuals of lowland ancestry.

In 2013, it was reported that pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) could be applied to obtain a systemic anti-inflammatory effect. Patients with chronic pain and patients with an inflammatory condition from other disciplines could potentially profit from this finding. At that time, intravenous application was used, but since then, it became clear that it could be applied transcutaneously as well.

Introduction: Textbook outcome (TO) is a composite outcome measure covering the surgical care process in a single outcome measure. TO has an advantage over single outcome parameters with low event rates, which have less discriminating impact to detect differences between hospitals. This study aimed to assess factors associated with TO, and evaluate hospital and network variation after case-mix correction in TO rates for liver surgery.

Joint modeling of endpoints can be used to answer various research questions in randomized clinical trials.

J Clin Epidemiol

July 2022

Department of Biomedical Data Science and Center for Innovative Study Design, School of Medicine, Stanford University, Stanford, CA, USA.

Objectives: Correlated longitudinal and time-to-event outcomes, such as the rate of cognitive decline and the onset of Alzheimer's disease, are frequent (co-)primary and key secondary endpoints in randomized clinical trials (RCTs). Despite their biological associations, these types of data are often analyzed separately, leading to loss of information and increases in bias. In this paper, we set out how joint modeling of longitudinal and time-to-event endpoints can be used in RCTs to answer various research questions.
