Gene fusions are nucleotide sequences formed due to errors in replication and transcription control. These errors, resulting from chromosomal translocation, transcriptional errors or trans-splicing, vary from cell to cell. The identification of fusions has become critical as key biomarkers for disease diagnosis and therapy in various cancers, significantly influencing modern medicine.

Isr Med Assoc J

October 2024

Department of Internal Medicine C, Rabin Medical Center (Beilinson Campus), Petah Tikva, Israel, Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel.

Article Synopsis
  • Coronary heart disease (CHD) patients are at high risk for cardiovascular issues, and guidelines suggest maintaining low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels below 55 mg/dl, but many patients do not achieve this target despite available treatments.
  • A study was conducted on 10,540 CHD patients admitted for anginal syndrome, revealing that many did not have recent lipid level measurements and only a small percentage were on effective lipid-lowering treatments like ezetimibe.
  • Hospitalization did not significantly improve adherence to treatment or LDL-C levels, indicating a need for better education and stricter policies to align clinical practices with established guidelines.

Article Synopsis
  • Pediatric urolithiasis is rare and usually linked to specific anatomical or metabolic issues, with this study examining emergency department (ED) admissions for renal colic among children and its potential relationship with climate.
  • A retrospective analysis of ED visits from 2010 to 2020 found a total of 609 admissions, showing a general decline over the years, with peaks in 2012 and 2018.
  • The research concluded that, unlike adults, seasonal variations and climate changes did not influence renal colic admissions in children, indicating different factors may be at play in this younger demographic.

Background: Antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programmes are established across the world to treat infections efficiently, prioritize patient safety, and reduce the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. One of the core elements of AMS programmes is guidance to support and direct physicians in making efficient, safe and optimal decisions when prescribing antibiotics. To optimize and tailor AMS, we need a better understanding of prescribing physicians' experience with AMS guidance.
