Objectives: Metachronous metastasis of renal cell carcinoma to the contralateral adrenal gland is very rare. We review our experience with 5 such patients and compare it with reports in the literature.
Methods: The records of all 350 patients who underwent nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma in our center between 1975 and 1992 were reviewed.

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6 n-3) is the major polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) in the adult mammalian brain. DHA is an essential fatty acid (FA) since it, or its short chain precursor, alpha-linolenic acid (LnA, 18:3 n-3), have to be obtained in the diet. Moreover, dietary n-3 FA deficiency is associated with biochemical changes in the brain and with disturbances in vision and other neurological parameters.

Serum and lung angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) activity is increased in the streptozotocin (STZ)-diabetic rat. In the present study, the effect of insulin treatment on this increased ACE activity in the STZ-diabetic rat was investigated. Serum and tissue ACE activity was determined by radiometric assay using [3H]-Hippuryl-glycyl-glycine as substrate.

Problem: Neonatal outcome of in vitro fertilization (IVF) pregnancies has been described by different authors, but several issues have yet to be resolved. The aim of the present study was to evaluate neonates conceived in vitro and to direct special attention to neonatal morbidity and prevalence of minor abnormalities. The information that has been accumulated so far is scant.

Objectives: To evaluate the treatment and prognosis of primary tumors in bladder diverticula.
Methods: The cases of 611 patients treated for bladder tumors at a single medical center were retrospectively reviewed.
Results: Eight patients had primary intradiverticular transitional cell carcinoma.

Glucocorticoids, such as dexamethasone, induce amiloride-sensitive Na+ conductances in rat distal colon epithelium. The activity of these conductances diminishes from the surface to the base of the crypt whereas cAMP-stimulated Cl- secretion decreases from the crypt base to the surface. These gradients are likely to be perturbed during carcinogenesis.

The authors report the implantation of two wallstents in a patient by use of the transradial artery approach. This approach for coronary wallstent implantation allows for intensive anticoagulation therapy with less risk of bleeding.

Nerve injury sometimes triggers neuropathic pain states that are exacerbated by sympathetic efferent activity. A classic example is causalgia. The mechanism of coupling between sympathetic efferent activity and the afferent discharge responsible for pain sensation is a subject of controversy.

Persistent fetal bradycardia is rarely encountered during pregnancy. When it is associated with a complete atrio-ventricular (A-V) block, it may prove dangerous to the fetus or newborn. The prenatal diagnosis is vital because it necessitates close follow-up during pregnancy to detect fetal compromise and proper preparation for delivery.

The proportion of spermatozoa that undergo spontaneous acrosome reaction in vitro is relatively low. The proportion can be enhanced by incubation with either biological inducers such as follicular fluid or chemicals like calcium ionophore. It has been suggested that improper acrosomal reaction may be a cause of fertilization failure in vitro.

Cholinergic urticaria presents as wheals and erythroderma that develop in response to a variety of factors which stimulate muscarinic receptors, including exercise, heat, cold, sweat and emotional stress. We describe a 25-year-old man with ulcerative colitis who developed cholinergic urticaria diagnosed by a metacholine test. He had had seven previous attacks over 8 years, and the finding of elevated liver enzymes required admission to four different hospitals.

It was suggested that neuronal degeneration in Parkinson's Disease (PD) is linked to dopamine (DA) toxicity. Dopamine has been shown to induce programmed cell death in both neuronal and non-neuronal cell types. We examined the molecular changes associated with dopamine-triggered apoptosis in sympathetic neurons using the differential display approach, and isolated 14 different DA responsive genes whose expression is altered during the early stages of the apoptotic process.

This study was designed to determine the benefit of therapy on final height (FHt) in girls with central precocious puberty (CPP). A total of 102 patients were evaluated--28 untreated, 26 treated with cyproterone acetate (CyA), and 48 treated with GnRH analogue (GnRHA)-and their achieved FHt was compared to the respective target height (THt). Of the untreated girls, half (14/28) had a slow course of puberty and reached THt +/- 0.

Hemangioma, the most common benign tumor of the liver, is found in 2% of all autopsies. Giant cavernous hemangiomas are those larger than 4 cm, and the only ones of clinical importance. During 1991-95 we saw 69 patients with cavernous hemangiomas of the liver ranging from 2 to 25 cm in diameter.

Ovarian cancer of epithelial origin is associated with the highest mortality rate of all gynecologic malignancies. Since no symptoms or signs are manifested at the early stages of the disease, it is no surprise that in 75% of patients peritoneal metastases are found during primary surgery. Despite advances in conservative treatment methods (invasive and noninvasive), screening for early detection of the disease is not yet available, and the overall survival rate is as low as 5-15%.

We report a case of type II ureteral triplication associated with ectopic ureter. The ureter, draining the upper renal segment, entered the vagina, and the other two ureters, draining the middle and lower renal segments, had joined and entered the bladder. The anatomic findings are compatible with those predicted by the Weigert-Meyer law.

Urethral diverticulum in the female is an acquired lesion following infection of the para-urethral glands. Its symptoms are often nonspecific and only by increased awareness of this condition can delay in diagnosis be avoided. Radiologic imaging of the urethra allows diagnosis of this lesion and determination of its location, extent and the number of lesions.

Objective: We tested the effect of patient compliance, fasting plasma glucose on oral glucose tolerance test, maternal body constitution, and the method of treatment (diet versus insulin) on the perinatal outcome of patients with gestational diabetes mellitus.
Study Design: A prospective population-based study compared the perinatal outcome of patients with gestational diabetes mellitus (n = 470) (diabetic with regard to the parameters specified above) and a contemporaneous control group (nondiabetic, n = 250).
Results: The diabetic and control groups were matched in demographic characteristics.
