Hepatobiliary cancers, such as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), are among the deadliest malignancies worldwide, leading to a significant number of cancer-related deaths. While bone metastases from these cancers are rare, they are highly aggressive and linked to poor prognosis. This review focuses on RNA-based molecular mechanisms that contribute to bone metastasis from hepatobiliary cancers.

Calibrations in LA-ICP-MS are typically very time-consuming and complex, as they need to be matched to the samples being measured and sectioned on a microtome. Alternatively, gelatin can be in droplet form or as a section, which is a more recent development. In this study, we report on investigations where hot multi-element gelatin solutions are placed in a linear fashion on microscopic slides to conduct comparative statistical observations between doped tissue homogenates from the liver and lung.

The present manuscript reports on the progress made toward the official announcement of the first World Conference on Cellular Communication and Signaling. This conference is made possible by the Association for research on biosignaling and communication initiative, which was originally launched in 2020 and revitalized during the 12th International Workshop on the Cell Communication Network family of genes in Oslo (June 20-23, 2024). The aim of this conference is to facilitate interactions among the members of societies interested in all aspects of research on Biosignaling and Communication.

The 12th international workshop on the CCN family of genes took place at the Scandic Holmenkollen Park Hotel in Oslo, Norway from June 20-23, 2024. In 2024, it was the second time, following the Nice meeting in 2022, that the scientific topics were expanded to include additional cellular signaling and communication pathways of interest to the CCN Society members, as suggested by Bernard Perbal in 2019. The 12th international CCN workshop, organized by Håvard Attramadal and Vivi T.

Background: Biofilm formation on implant-abutment surfaces can cause inflammatory reactions. Ethical concerns often limit intraoral testing, necessitating preliminary in vitro or animal studies. Here, we propose an in vitro model using human saliva and hypothesize that this model has the potential to closely mimic the dynamics of biofilm formation on implant-abutment material surfaces in vivo.

The incidence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been steadily increasing in Western society in recent years and has been recognized as a risk factor for the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the progression from NAFLD to HCC are still unclear, despite the use of suitable mouse models. To identify the transcriptional and lipid profiles of livers from mice with NAFLD-HCC, we induced both NAFLD and NAFLD-HCC pathologies in C57BL/6J mice and performed RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) and targeted lipidomic analysis.

Introduction: Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) has emerged as the leading cause of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) worldwide. Over the years, Perilipin 5 (PLIN5) has been recognized as a key regulator of both MAFLD and HCC development. In our previous studies we demonstrated that deficiency in reduces the severity of MAFLD and HCC in mice.

Background: Adiponectin, an adipokine with anti-inflammatory properties, has been implicated in various liver diseases. This study aimed to elucidate the prognostic value of serum adiponectin levels in critically ill patients with liver disease.
Methods: This observational study included 161 critically ill patients admitted to the medical ICU of RWTH Aachen University Hospital due to acute liver failure or decompensated advanced chronic liver disease.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) presents a significant challenge in neuro-oncology due to its aggressive behavior and self-renewal capacity. Circular RNAs (circRNAs), a subset of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) generated through mRNA back-splicing, are gaining attention as potential targets for GBM research. In our study, we sought to explore the functional role of circMMP9 (circular form of matrix metalloproteinase-9) as a promising therapeutic target for GBM through bioinformatic predictions and human data analysis.

Mitochondria are vital for cellular activities, influencing ATP production, Ca2 signaling, and reactive oxygen species generation. It has been proposed that nuclear genome-derived circular RNAs (circRNAs) play a role in biological processes. For the first time, this study aims to comprehensively explore experimentally confirmed human mitochondrial genome-derived circRNAs (mt-circRNAs) via in-silico analysis.

Background: While REIMS technology has successfully been demonstrated for the histological identification of ex-vivo breast tumor tissues, questions regarding the robustness of the approach and the possibility of tumor molecular diagnostics still remain unanswered. In the current study, we set out to determine whether it is possible to acquire cross-comparable REIMS datasets at multiple sites for the identification of breast tumors and subtypes.
Methods: A consortium of four sites with three of them having access to fresh surgical tissue samples performed tissue analysis using identical REIMS setups and protocols.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has affected not only individual lives but also the world and global systems, both natural and human-made. Besides millions of deaths and environmental challenges, the rapid spread of the infection and its very high socioeconomic impact have affected healthcare, economic status and wealth, and mental health across the globe. To better appreciate the pandemic's influence, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches are needed.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a deadly disease that is almost entirely resistant to conventional chemotherapy and radiation therapy. A significant factor in this resistance appears to be the dense desmoplastic stroma, which contains various cancer-associated fibroblast (CAF) populations. However, our understanding of the communication between tumor cells and CAFs that contributes to this aggressive malignancy is still developing.

It is the purpose of this review to compare differences in postnatal epigenetic programming at the level of DNA and RNA methylation and later obesity risk between infants receiving artificial formula feeding (FF) in contrast to natural breastfeeding (BF). FF bears the risk of aberrant epigenetic programming at the level of DNA methylation and enhances the expression of the RNA demethylase fat mass- and obesity-associated gene (), pointing to further deviations in the RNA methylome. Based on a literature search through Web of Science, Google Scholar, and PubMed databases concerning the dietary and epigenetic factors influencing gene and FTO protein expression and FTO activity, FTO's impact on postnatal adipogenic programming was investigated.

Vitamin K antagonists (VKA) remain the only option of anticoagulation for people with mechanical valve replacement and due to their wider availability and lower acquisition costs, VKA's remain widely used in low- and middle-income countries. It has been suggested that prolonged use of VKAs can increase the development of vascular and valvular calcification, though this effect has not been examined in larger randomized prospective trials. This investigator-initiated multicenter, prospective, randomized, open-label interventional trial randomized patients with baseline coronary or valvular calcification and an indication for prolonged oral anticoagulation therapy to Marcumar or Rivaroxaban.

This threatening epidemic is linked to various harmful conditions such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, polycystic ovary syndrome, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), dyslipidemia, and cancer. The rise in urbanization and sedentary lifestyles creates an environment that fosters obesity, leading to both psychosocial and medical complications.

Biohybrid tissue-engineered vascular grafts (TEVGs) promise long-term durability due to their ability to adapt to hosts' needs. However, the latter calls for sensitive non-invasive imaging approaches to longitudinally monitor their functionality, integrity, and positioning. Here, we present an imaging approach comprising the labeling of non-degradable and degradable TEVGs' components for their in vitro and in vivo monitoring by hybrid H/F MRI.
