Despite being clinically used for over a century, the benefits of silver nanoparticles are perennially under debate and dispute. In the last two decades, a revived interest in their therapeutic applications has resulted in a few new formulations transitioning into clinical trials. These metal nanomedicines are used in concrete applications that are defined by the physicochemical and biological features of the silver nanoconstructs, as well as their biodistribution profiles.

Antibubbles are liquid droplets encapsulated by a gas film that have recently been explored for on-demand ultrasound-triggered drug release. However, their ultrasound imaging capabilities are limited by their stiff shells stabilized with silica nanoparticles. Here, we develop polymeric antibubbles that generate greater ultrasound contrast than silica-based antibubbles, while showing better stability than conventional polymeric microbubbles.

Controlled manufacturing and long-term stability are key challenges in the development and translation of nanomedicines. This is exemplified by the mRNA-nanoparticle vaccines against COVID-19, which require (ultra-)cold temperatures for storage and shipment. Various cryogenic protocols have been explored to prolong nanomedicine shelf-life.

Background: In healthy articular cartilage, chondrocytes are found along arcades of collagen fibers as Single Strings. With onset of cartilage degeneration this pattern changes to Double Strings. In the course of osteoarthritis Small Clusters, and finally Big Clusters form.

Background: Most patients undergoing bariatric surgery demonstrate elements of the metabolic syndrome (MetS) and can therefore be diagnosed with metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO). Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) as hepatic manifestations of the MetS occur in many patients with obesity, but their leverage on postoperative improvement to Metabolic Health (MH), defined as absence of any metabolic comorbidity, remains unclear.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the influence of liver health status, operative procedure, and sex on postoperative switch from a MUO to an MH phenotype.

The increasing importance of regenerative medicine has resulted in a growing need for advanced tissue replacement materials in head and neck surgery. Allo- and xenogenic graft processing is often time-consuming and can deteriorate the extracellular matrix (ECM). High hydrostatic pressure (HHP)-treatment could allow specific devitalization while retaining the essential properties of the ECM.

Background: No universal protocol exists for treating cerebral abscesses in Down syndrome. An illustrative case supplemented with a systematic literature review on brain abscesses in Down syndrome is presented, comprising a total of 16 cases. Preoperative infectious disease workups, cardiac examinations including echocardiography, as well as reported surgical and antibiotic treatments were correlated in the reported cohorts.

Nanomedicines have created a paradigm shift in healthcare. Yet fundamental barriers still exist that prevent or delay the clinical translation of nanomedicines. Critical hurdles inhibiting clinical success include poor understanding of nanomedicines' physicochemical properties, limited exposure in the cell or tissue of interest, poor reproducibility of preclinical outcomes in clinical trials, and biocompatibility concerns.

Background: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the most lethal cancers worldwide. Presently, only a fraction of patients undergo successful surgical resection, the most effective treatment. Enhancing treatment strategies necessitates a deep comprehension of the factors underlying extended survival after surgical resection in patients.

Microbubbles (MB) are widely used as contrast agents for ultrasound (US) imaging and US-enhanced drug delivery. Polymeric MB are highly suitable for these applications because of their acoustic responsiveness, high drug loading capability, and ease of surface functionalization. While many studies have focused on using polymeric MB for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, relatively little attention has thus far been paid to improving their inherent imaging and drug delivery features.

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) are widely used for biomedical applications, including magnetic particle imaging (MPI) and magnetic hyperthermia. The co-precipitation method is one of the most common synthetic routes to obtain SPIONs, since it is simple and does not require extreme conditions, such as high temperatures. Despite its prevalence, however, the co-precipitation synthesis presents some challenges, most notably the high batch-to-batch variability, as multiple factors can influence nanoparticle growth.
