A clinical score for neuroendocrine tumor patients under consideration for Lu-177-DOTATATE therapy.

Endocr Relat Cancer

March 2021

Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Division of Hematology and Oncology, Department of Medicine, Nashville, Tennessee, USA.

We developed a clinical score (CS) at Vanderbilt Ingram Cancer Center (VICC) that we hoped would predict outcomes for patients with progressive well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) receiving therapy with Lutetium-177 (177Lu)-DOTATATE. Patients under consideration for 177Lu-DOTATATE between March 1, 2016 and March 17, 2020 at VICC were assigned a CS prospectively. The CS included 5 categories: available treatments for tumor type outside of 177Lu-DOTATATE, prior systemic treatments, patient symptoms, tumor burden in critical organs and presence of peritoneal carcinomatosis.

Patterns of Alcohol Use After Early Liver Transplantation for Alcoholic Hepatitis.

Clin Gastroenterol Hepatol

February 2022

Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Early liver transplantation (LT) for alcoholic hepatitis (AH) can save lives, but concerns about returning to harmful alcohol use persist; the study aimed to identify patterns of alcohol use after LT to improve candidate selection and post-transplant care.
  • Analysis of data from 153 LT recipients revealed four distinct post-LT alcohol use patterns: abstinent, late/non-heavy, early/non-heavy, and early/heavy, with the majority (71%) remaining abstinent and showing better long-term survival rates.
  • The findings suggest that early alcohol use post-LT is linked to higher mortality rates and correlates with certain pre-transplant characteristics, which can guide both the selection of candidates for transplantation and their follow-up care.

Background: Fluid intelligence (FI) involves abstract problem-solving without prior knowledge. Greater age-related FI decline increases Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk, and recent studies suggest that certain dietary regimens may influence rates of decline. However, it is uncertain how long-term food consumption affects FI among adults with or without familial history of AD (FH) or APOE4 (ɛ4).

How Does a Unilateral Temporomandibular Joint Replacement Affect Bilateral Masseter and Temporalis Muscle Activity?-A Prospective Study.

J Oral Maxillofac Surg

February 2021

Private Practice, Praxis Fuer Gesichtschirurgie und Kiefergelenkschirurgie, Hamburg, Germany.

Purpose: Total alloplastic temporomandibular joint replacement (TMJR) requires the detachment of the masseter muscle (MM) at its insertion to the lateral ramus and often the resection of the coronoid process (insertion of the temporalis muscle). There is little literature on how a detachment affects the muscles. The present study evaluates the long-term masticatory muscle activities and maximum voluntary bite force (MVC) in patients with unilateral TMJR.

Parkinson's disease (PD) pathogenesis may involve the epigenetic control of enhancers that modify neuronal functions. Here, we comprehensively examine DNA methylation at enhancers, genome-wide, in neurons of patients with PD and of control individuals. We find a widespread increase in cytosine modifications at enhancers in PD neurons, which is partly explained by elevated hydroxymethylation levels.

Low rates of adult patient participation have been a persistent problem in cancer clinical trials and have continued to be a barrier to efficient drug development. The routine use of significant exclusion criteria has contributed to this problem by limiting participation in studies and creating significant clinical differences between the study cohorts and the real-world cancer patient populations. These routine exclusions also unnecessarily restrict opportunities for many patients to access potentially promising new therapies during clinical development.
