Introduction: The host range of phages is usually assessed with the agar overlay method. However, this method is both cumbersome and subjective. Therefore, a microbroth assay was developed to assess host range and lytic activity patterns of phages in the agar overlay method against a collection of carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) isolates.

Article Synopsis
  • Incessant ovulation contributes to ovarian high-grade serous carcinomas (HGSC), which primarily arise from the fallopian tube epithelium (FTE), and receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) ligands play a key role in this process.
  • A study investigated follicular fluid exosomes from women undergoing in vitro fertilization to identify RTK ligands and their impact on FTE cells, using various RTK inhibitors.
  • The findings revealed that FF exosomes were rich in transformative abilities and essential EGFR ligands, promoting cell growth and migration, indicating their significant contribution to HGSC development.

Background: Here, we aim to develop and validate a viable prognostic nomogram model for predicting a stone-free rate of kidney stones patients based on retrospective cohort analysis.

Methods: This is a retrospective study that obtained a continuous cohort from the databases of two hospitals (General Hospital of Southern Theater Command, and Guangdong Second Provincial General Hospital), including 522 patients with kidney stones who underwent Endoscopic Combined Intrarenal Surgery (ECIRS) from January 2015 to December 2022.The characteristics of the primary cohort between the SF (stone-free) and SR (stone residue) groups were identified using single factor and multivariate logistic regression analyses.

Objective: To investigate the predictive value of a Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) for postoperative major adverse cardiovascular events(MACEs) in elderly patients undergoing major abdominal surgery and to develop a nomogram risk prediction model.

Methods: A total of 427 elderly patients aged ≥ 65 years who underwent major abdominal surgery at our hospital between June 2023 and March 2024 were selected for the study, and 416 patients were ultimately included. The preoperative SPPB score was measured, and the patients were divided into two groups: a high SPPB group (≥ 10) and a low SPPB group (< 10).

Background: To explore the correlation between the levels of D-dimer (D-D), fibrinogen (FIB), fibrinogen degradation products (FDP) and platelets (PLT) in peripheral blood of patients with lower limb fractures and the formation of deep vein thrombosis in lower limbs, and to establish a new thrombosis prediction model for patients with lower limb fractures.

Methods: The patients were divided into DVT group and non DVT group according to whether there was deep vein thrombosis of the lower extremity. The differences in the levels of D-D, FIB, FDP and platelets between the two groups were analyzed and compared.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to explore how fluctuations in blood glucose levels relate to chronic pain in older adults (aged 60+) with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and assess the predictive value of these fluctuations for pain severity.
  • A total of 60 patients were evaluated, categorizing them into mild and severe pain groups based on their numeric pain scores, with extensive clinical data and continuous glucose monitoring used for analysis.
  • Results indicated that higher pain scores correlated positively with factors like age, diabetes duration, and specific glucose parameters, while showing negative correlation with red blood cell count.

MicroRNAs can be found intracellularly incorporated into extracellular vesicles (EV-miRNAs) or extracellularly as cell-free miRNAs (cf-miRNAs). This study aimed to compare the diagnostic and prognostic potential of four miRNAs with recognized roles in prostate cancer as cf-miRNAs and EV-miRNAs, obtained from liquid biopsies (LB). Total RNA was isolated from whole plasma and plasma EVs from 15 controls (CTR) and 30 patients (20 with localized prostate cancer (PCa), 10 with metastatic prostate cancer (mPCa)).

Medical imaging, particularly radiography, is an indispensable part of diagnosing many chest diseases. Final diagnoses are made by radiologists based on images, but the decision-making process is always associated with a risk of incorrect interpretation. Incorrectly interpreted data can lead to delays in treatment, a prescription of inappropriate therapy, or even a completely missed diagnosis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound (CEUS) along with Procalcitonin (PCT) levels in distinguishing Tuberculous Lymph Nodes (TLN) from Metastatic Lymph Nodes (MLN) in 207 patients.
  • Results showed significant differences in imaging patterns, with TLN exhibiting specific enhancements that were less common in MLN, and higher PCT levels indicating a higher risk for MLN.
  • The combination of CEUS and PCT provided a more accurate predictive model for diagnosing MLN, demonstrating good calibration and diagnostic performance.

The RENAL nephrometry score (RNS) is a standardized approach for grading the complexity of renal masses, although it does not have a strong correlation with the perioperative outcomes of open partial nephrectomy. To address these issues, a modified RENAL has been proposed.  The study's goal is to determine the usefulness of a modified RENAL nephrometry score in predicting perioperative outcomes after open partial nephrectomy.

BACKGROUND Subchorionic hematoma (SCH) can lead to blood accumulation and potentially affect pregnancy outcomes. Despite being a relatively common finding in early pregnancy, the effects of SCH on pregnancy outcomes such as miscarriage, stillbirth, and preterm birth remain debated. This study aims to address these gaps by systematically evaluating the influence of SCH-related clinical factors on pregnancy outcomes using robust analytical techniques.

Background: Preoperative biliary drainage (PBD) for selected patients with severe juandice has been shown to improve clinical conditions for pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) and reduce the risk of post-pancreatectomy hemorrhage (PPH). However, the determination of an optimal end-point for PBD remains unclear. The aim of this research is to introduce the concept of goal-oriented biliary drainage, which may serve as a reasonable target and identify the optimal surgery time window.
