Amino acid analysis (AAA) method is the most accurate methodology for absolute quantification of proteins. The conventional postcolumn method employing ninhydrin labeling of amino acids, which is adopted in automatic amino acid analyzer, is limited by low sensitivity. Therefore, a highly sensitive AAA method is required to confirm the data obtained from mass spectrometry or N-terminal sequence analysis.

Cross-linked polymers prepared by the in-situ polymerization of liquid-crystalline salts were found to work as solid-state hosts with a flexible framework. As a component of such hosts, four kinds of polymerizable amphiphilic carboxylic acids bearing alkyl chains with acryloyloxy (A), dienyl (D), and/or nonreactive (N) chain ends (monomeric carboxylic acids; M(AAA), M(ANA), M(DDD), and M(DND)) were used. The carboxylic acids were mixed with an equimolar amount of a template unit, (1R,2S)-norephedrine (guest amine; G(RS)), to form the corresponding salts.

Mitochondrial fusion plays an important role in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) maintenance, although the underlying mechanisms are unclear. In budding yeast, certain levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) can promote recombination-mediated mtDNA replication, and mtDNA maintenance depends on the homologous DNA pairing protein Mhr1. Here, we show that the fusion of isolated yeast mitochondria, which can be monitored by the bimolecular fluorescence complementation-derived green fluorescent protein (GFP) fluorescence, increases the mtDNA copy number in a manner dependent on Mhr1.
