As we assess the habitability of other worlds, we are limited by being able to only study terrestrial life adapted to terrestrial conditions. The environments found on Earth, though tremendously diverse, do not approach the multitude of potentially habitable environments beyond Earth, and so limited terrestrial adaptive capabilities tell us little about the fundamental biochemical boundaries of life. One approach to this problem is to use experimental laboratory evolution to adapt microbes to these novel environmental conditions.

Targeting pleuro-alveolar junctions reverses lung fibrosis in mice.

Lung fibrosis development utilizes alveolar macrophages, with mechanisms that are incompletely understood. Here, we fate map connective tissue during mouse lung fibrosis and observe disassembly and transfer of connective tissue macromolecules from pleuro-alveolar junctions (PAJs) into deep lung tissue, to activate fibroblasts and fibrosis. Disassembly and transfer of PAJ macromolecules into deep lung tissue occurs by alveolar macrophages, activating cysteine-type proteolysis on pleural mesothelium.

Maternal and infant predictors of human milk macronutrient and energy concentrations in rural Bangladesh: an observational cohort study.

Background: Human milk macronutrient (protein, fat, and carbohydrate) and energy concentrations vary based on maternal and infant factors and time postpartum.

Objective: To determine the change in milk macronutrient and energy concentrations from approximately 2 to 5 months postpartum and identify factors associated with this variation among a lactation cohort in Bangladesh.

Methods: In this prospective observational lactation cohort in rural Sylhet, Bangladesh, we collected hand-expressed mid-feed human milk samples and analyzed macronutrient concentrations using mid-infrared spectroscopy.

Cigarette smoking and symptom burden: baseline results from 9 ECOG-ACRIN cancer clinical trials.

Context: Approximately 11% of cancer survivors smoke post-diagnosis.

Objective: Understanding the relationship between smoking and perceived cancer-related symptoms may inform tobacco treatment interventions for this population.

Context: Research shows hospice primary caregivers report better quality of care at Non-Profit (NP) than For-Profit (FP) hospices, but there is variation in quality across NP hospices.

Objective: Examine bereaved caregiver reports of the quality as a factor of whether NP hospices are part of an integrated healthcare system that included an acute care hospital.

Objectives: Cerebral microbleeds (cMBs) are common imaging findings in conditions related to cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA). Blood-brain barrier (BBB) leakage is considered pivotal in their pathogenesis. The topic of data storage, traceability, and data use and reuse in the years following experiments is becoming an important topic in Europe and across the world. Many scientific communities are striving to create open data by the FAIR principles. This is a requirement from the European Commission for EU-funded projects and experiments at EU-funded research infrastructures (RIs) and from many national funding agencies.

Melanoma toolkit for early detection for primary care clinicians: a 1-year follow-up on outcomes.

Introduction: Primary care providers or clinicians (PCPs) have the potential to assist dermatologists in screening patients at risk for skin cancer, but require training to appropriately identify higher-risk patients, perform skin checks, recognize and biopsy concerning lesions, interpret pathology results, document the exam, and bill for the service. In this article we discuss the steps to perform retrograde CTO PCI and its complications and success rates.

Randomized clinical trial protocol of an app-based intervention to prevent postpartum depression.

Purpose: To develop and evaluate the effectiveness of an asynchronously delivered app, InBloom, for postpartum depression (PPD) prevention relative to an evidence-based synchronously delivered in-person intervention, ROSE (Reach Out, Stay Strong, Essentials for mothers of newborns) for depression and return on investment via a prospective randomized controlled trial and quasi-experimental cohort analyses.

Background: PPD affects 1 in 7 gestational parents in the US, causing emotional distress, consequences for infant development and child adjustment, disruptions in family relationships, and financial burden. ROSE is an evidence-based intervention administered as four in-person group sessions plus one postpartum booster session.

Background: There are no clinical parameters that predict response to intra-arterial chemotherapy (IAC), which is a first-line treatment for primary and recurrent unilateral retinoblastoma. We evaluated the utility of ophthalmic ultrasound with color Doppler imaging to predict retinoblastoma response to IAC treatment.

Objective: The authors critically examine the evidence base for psilocybin administered with psychological support/therapy (PST) in the treatment of psychiatric disorders and offer practical recommendations to guide future research endeavors.

Methods: PubMed was searched for English-language articles from January 1998 to November 2023, using the search term "psilocybin." A total of 1,449 articles were identified and screened through titles and abstracts.

Methods: From October 2020 to December 2023, 196 pregnant patients who had a history of late abortions at our institution were chosen. They were divided into groups based on the treatments used.

Implementing an AI algorithm in the clinical setting: a case study for the accuracy paradox.

Objectives: We report our experience implementing an algorithm for the detection of large vessel occlusion (LVO) for suspected stroke in the emergency setting, including its performance, and offer an explanation as to why it was poorly received by radiologists.

Materials And Methods: An algorithm was deployed in the emergency room at a single tertiary care hospital for the detection of LVO on CT angiography (CTA) between September 1st-27th, 2021. A retrospective analysis of the algorithm's accuracy was performed.

Our objective was to examine the effect of NH decreases in antipsychotic use on outcomes for residents with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

Aims: Excellent outcomes have been reported following CT-based robotic arm-assisted total hip arthroplasty (rTHA) compared with manual THA; however, its superiority over CT-based navigation THA (nTHA) remains unclear. This study aimed to determine whether a CT-based robotic arm-assisted system helps surgeons perform accurate cup placement, minimizes leg length, and offsets discrepancies more than a CT-based navigation system.

Methods: We studied 60 hips from 54 patients who underwent rTHA between April 2021 and August 2023, and 45 hips from 44 patients who underwent nTHA between January 2020 and March 2021 with the same target cup orientation at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Ozu Memorial Hospital, Japan.
