Synovial sarcoma (SS) is driven by a unique t(18;X) chromosomal translocation resulting in expression of the SS18-SSX fusion oncoprotein, a transcriptional regulator with both activating and repressing functions. However, the manner in which SS18-SSX contributes to the development of SS is not entirely known. Here, we show that SS18-SSX drives the expression of Preferentially Expressed Antigen in Melanoma (PRAME), which is highly expressed in SS but whose function remains poorly understood.

The key role of cancer stem cells (CSCs) in tumor development and therapy resistance makes them essential biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Numerous agents targeting CSCs, either as monotherapy or as part of combination therapy, are currently being tested in clinical trials to treat solid tumors and hematologic malignancies. Data from ongoing and future clinical trials testing novel approaches to target tumor stemness-related biomarkers and pathways may pave the way for further clinical development of CSC-targeted treatments and CSC-guided selection of therapeutic regimens.

Pediatric brain tumors currently show the highest incidence among solid childhood malignancies and, together with leukemia, are the leading cause of death from cancer in childhood. Embryonal brain tumors are the most common and frequent type of childhood brain cancer and are usually characterized by an extremely aggressive course of the disease with the worst outcomes in most cases. There is an urgent need for specific refined molecular diagnostics, which would help to develop personalized treatment.

Ubiquitin-specific protease 1 (USP1) is an important deubiquitinating enzyme (DUB) involved in the maintenance of genome integrity, cell cycle, and cell homeostasis. USP1 overexpression is a characteristic feature of various cancers, correlating with a poor prognosis. The review summarizes the recent knowledge in understanding the role of deubiquitinase USP1 in the stabilization of oncoproteins and tumor suppressors, as a critical event in cancer development and progression.

The effects of insulin on the doxorubicin (Dox) sensitivity of breast cancer cell line MCF-7 and its Dox-resistant counterpart MCF-7/Dox were studied and glucose metabolism, content of essential minerals, and the expression of several microRNAs in these cells upon exposure to insulin and Dox were compared. Cell viability colorimetric assay, colorimetric enzymatic technique, flow cytometry, immunocytochemical techniques, inductively-coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, and quantitative polymerase chain reaction were used in the study. We found that insulin in high concentration significantly suppressed Dox toxicity, especially in parental MCF-7 cell line.

A new method for photosensitized polymerization of polyacrylamide gels was proposed. Photopolymerization of acrylamide/N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (AM/Bis) was assisted with combination of catalyst ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt dihydrate (EDTA) and photoinitiator riboflavin (RF). The prepared cross-linked AM/Bis + EDTA/RF gels were tested in electrophoretic SDS-PAGE system at high concentration of AM (20 wt%).

Background: Approximately 15% to 24% of essential thrombocythemia (ET) and 25-35% of primary myelofibrosis cases carry a mutation in the calreticulin (CALR) gene. Sanger sequencing, qPCR, high resolution melt or targeted next generation sequencing usually used to detect these mutations are expensive and require costly equipment. For more than 35 years after Chornobyl catastrophe, about 5 million people in Ukraine, Republic of Belarus and Russian Federation inhabit the territories that are residually contaminated with long-lived radionuclides such as Cs, Sr. The previous studies of the Reference Laboratory operating at RE Kavetsky Institute of Experimental Pathology, Oncology and Radiobiology allowed specifying the effects of the protracted low dose irradiation on the state of the hematopoietic and lymphoid tissues resulting in the increased proportion of the B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma and acute myeloid leukemia among the patients referred from the contaminated areas of Ukraine. Since the beginning of 2020, these effects of radiation were superimposed by the factors associated with COVID-19 pandemic.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a strikingly heterogeneous disease both at the molecular level and clinical disease course. The malignant B cells obtain key proliferation and survival signals within lymph nodes or bone marrow. Moreover, CLL B cells and tumor microenvironment dynamically co-evolve organizing inflammatory and immunosuppressive microenvironment by direct contact with surrounding cells and secretion of cytokines, growth factors, or extracellular vesicles.

Unlabelled: The variability of the clinical course of prostate cancer (PC) indicates the need to find factors that could predict the aggressive potential of neoplasms accounting the biological characteristics of tumor cells. In this context, the role of NANOG, a transcription factor involved in maintaining pluripotency and one of the markers of cancer stem cells (CSCs), is being actively studied today.

According to the data collected from the primary hematological facilities in Ukraine in 2010-2017, the incidence of lymphoid neoplasms from mature B cells, acute myeloid leukemia, and multiple myeloma in the most contaminated regions was higher than in the less contaminated ones. For the first time, the relative contribution of the several specific types of leukemia in the total diagnosed hematological malignancies has been analyzed throughout 1997-2017 based on the in-house database compiled by the Reference Laboratory of RE Kavetsky Institute of Experimental Pathology, Oncology and Radiobiology, the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
