Introduction: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with exacerbations which can reduce quality of life and increase mortality. Single-inhaler triple therapy (SITT) is recommended for maintenance treatment of COPD among patients experiencing exacerbations despite dual-therapy use. This real-world comparative effectiveness study compared the impact of SITTs, fluticasone furoate/umeclidinium/vilanterol (FF/UMEC/VI), and budesonide/glycopyrrolate/formoterol fumarate (BUD/GLY/FORM), on COPD exacerbations and mortality.

A narrative review of sleep and breast cancer: from epidemiology to mechanisms.

Cancer Causes Control

December 2024

Department of Clinical Nutrition, the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University, 218 Jixi Road, Hefei, 230022, Anhui, China.

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death and the most common cancer among women worldwide. It is crucial to identify potentially modifiable risk factors to intervene and prevent breast cancer effectively. Sleep factors have emerged as a potentially novel risk factor for female breast cancer.

The widespread use of pesticides, including diazinon, poses an increased risk of environmental pollution and detrimental effects on biodiversity, food security, and water resources. In this study, we investigated the impact of Potentially Toxic Elements (PTE) including Zn, Cd, V, and Mn on the degradation of diazinon in three different soils. We investigated the capability and performance of four machine learning models to predict residual pesticide concentration, including adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), support vector regression (SVR), radial basis function (RBF), and multi-layer perceptron (MLP).

Application of zeolites for efficient tannery wastewater remediation.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

December 2024

Stazione Sperimentale Per L'industria Delle Pelli E Delle Materie Concianti S.R.L., 80143, Napoli, Italy.

Leather manufacturing is the process of converting raw animal hides or skins into finished leather. The complex industrial procedures result in a tanning effluent composed of chemical compounds with potentially hazardous impacts on humans and ecosystems. Among the traditional and efficient wastewater treatments, adsorption is an effective and well-known approach, able to manage a wide range of contaminants from wastewater.

Root nodule symbiosis is traditionally recognized in the Fabales, Fagales, Cucurbitales, and Rosales orders within the Rosid I clade of angiosperms. However, ambiguous root nodule formation has been reported in Zygophyllaceae and Roystonea regia (Arecaceae), although a detailed analysis has yet to be conducted. We aimed to perform morphological analyses of root structures in these plants and utilize metagenomic techniques to identify and characterize the bacterial populations within the nodule-like structures.

Background: Cryoballoon ablation has been widely performed in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF). In some challenging pulmonary veins (PVs), the procedure requires additional touch-up applications against the residual conduction gaps. It implies that there could exist difficult sites to cover with standard cryoballoon applications (CBAs), resulting in resistant conduction gaps (RCGs).

Fatal dengue virus infection in an unvaccinated traveler.

Eur J Clin Microbiol Infect Dis

December 2024

Institute of Virology, Faculty of Medicine and University Hospital Cologne, University of Cologne, Cologne, Germany.

Dengue is an increasing threat to individuals living in or visiting endemic countries. Effective vaccines have become available, but their use in travelers is typically only recommended to individuals with documented prior infection. We present a fatal case of severe dengue in an unvaccinated traveler without known prior dengue virus infection but longitudinal serologic and molecular evidence for secondary infection.

Non-invasive pressure-volume loop derived temporal elastance, contractility, and efficiency indices for assessing Duchenne muscular dystrophy patients.

Heart Vessels

December 2024

Department of Biomedical Engineering, Veterans Affairs Medical Center, University of Cincinnati, Rhodes Hall 593, 2851 Woodside Drive, Cincinnati, OH, 45219, USA.

Ejection fraction is commonly used to assess Duchenne muscular dystrophy-associated cardiomyopathy (DMDAC), but it may remain normal (wrongly) despite significant myocardial dysfunction in patients. Therefore, better indicators of myocardial dysfunction are needed for longitudinal (with time) assessment and treatment of DMDAC patients. This study evaluates non-invasive LV PV loop-derived elastance, contractility and efficiency in relation to EF for patients developing DMDAC.

Protein hydrolysis targeted chimeras (PROTACs) represent a different therapeutic approach, particularly relevant for overcoming challenges associated with traditional small molecule inhibitors. These challenges include targeting difficult proteins that are often deemed "undruggable" and addressing issues of acquired resistance. PROTACs employ the body's own E3 ubiquitin ligases to induce the degradation of specific proteins of interest (POIs) through the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway.

An amine-promoted three-component radical selenofunctionalization reaction of alkenes with TBHP and diselenide is disclosed. The reaction conditions are mild and suitable for a wide range of substrates (29 examples), and all give the corresponding hydroxyselenenylation products in moderate to excellent yields. In addition, preliminary studies on the mechanism reveal that the current method might proceed via a radical pathway.

Rearranged during transfection (RET) kinase is a validated therapeutic target for various cancers characterized by RET alterations. Although two selective RET inhibitors, selpercatinib and pralsetinib, have been approved by the FDA, acquired resistance through solvent-front mutations has been identified rapidly. Developing proteolysis targeting chimera (PROTAC) targeting RET mutations offers a promising strategy to combat drug resistance.

This two-phase study aims to develop the Turkish version of the German Eating Behavior Scale (SEV-Tr), and to investigate the potential associations of eating behaviors with nutritional and health status. In the first phase, the original scale was adapted to the Turkish language and its validity and reliability were assessed in 299 healthy individuals aged 19-64 years. In the second phase, the SEV-Tr was retested in a study population of 110 healthy individuals, aged 19-64 years, and the potential associations between the SEV-Tr score, anthropometrical and biochemical measurements, and other eating behaviors assessed by the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ-Tr21) were examined.

Rapid thrombolysis is very important to reduce complications caused by vascular blockage. A promising approach for improving thrombolysis efficiency is utilizing the permanent magnetically actuated locomotion of nanorobots. However, the thrombolytic drug transportation efficiency is challenged by in-plane rotating locomotion and the insufficient drug penetration limits further improvement of thrombolysis.
