Background: Early targeted antibiotic therapy is crucial for improving the prognosis of immunocompromised patients with severe respiratory infections (SRIs) in the intensive care unit (ICU). Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) has shown significant value in pathogen detection, but research on lower respiratory tract microorganisms remains limited.

Methods: This study enrolled 234 patients with SRIs in the ICU, and individuals were categorized into immunocompromised and immunocompetent groups.

Introduction: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic inflammatory disease where pro-inflammatory cytokines, damage-associated molecular patterns and macrophages play a crucial role. However, the interaction of these mediators, the exact cause, and the treatment of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) are still unclear. Moreover, the interaction of interleukin (IL)-33, platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB), and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) with other factors in the pathogenesis of KOA has not been elaborately explored.

Background And Aims: To investigate mechanisms underlying the effects of Da-Cheng-Qi decoction (DCQD) on severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) capillary leakage syndrome.

Methods: In this study, a SAP rat model was established using retrograde perfusion of 5% sodium taurocholate into the biliopancreatic duct. The study included three randomized groups: control, SAP (modeling), and DCQD (via gavage at 2 h pre-modeling and 2 and 4 h post-modeling).

Article Synopsis
  • - Abdominal ultrasound is vital for diagnosing issues in organs like the liver, kidneys, and gallbladder, but its use is limited by factors like equipment availability, cost, and time constraints during regular check-ups.
  • - The study focuses on predicting the risk of abdominal diseases using basic physical examination data, including factors like age, gender, cholesterol levels, and blood pressure, by developing several single-label predictive models using the XGBoost algorithm.
  • - The models show strong predictive performance for various conditions, with a highlight on the multi-label model that can predict multiple diseases at once, facilitating early diagnosis and better disease prevention strategies in clinical settings.

We previously found that miR-664a-5p is specifically expressed in urinary exosomes of idiopathic membranous nephropathy (IMN) patients. Homeodomain-interacting protein kinase 2 (HIPK2), a nuclear serine/threonine kinase, plays an important role in nephropathy. But the function of these factors and their connection in MN are unclear.

Background: Hallux valgus (HV) is a common clinical deformity of the forefoot, primarily a deformity of the 1st metatarsophalangeal joint in which the bunion is deflected laterally relative to the 1st metatarsal, often in combination with a medial bunion or pain at the head of the 1st metatarsal. For HV bunions that do not respond to conservative treatment, surgical intervention is required, which generally involves osteotomy of the first metatarsal or the first phalanx. However, the choice of fixation method after osteotomy is controversial.

Background: Pneumonia is a severe respiratory disease in both children and elderly people and is commonly accompanied with inflammation and lung injury. In this study, we sought to examine the expression and function of serum amyloid A-like 1 (SAAL1) in a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated pneumonia model.

Methods: An LPS-stimulated mouse model and A549 lung cell model were established to examine the effects of SAAL1 in pneumonia.

Objective: To investigate the incidence and clinical features of hypokalemia in children with acute episode of bronchial asthma.

Methods: The clinical records of 56 children with acute episode of bronchial asthma were reviewed and analyzed.

Results: Altogether 21 children with the complication of hypokalemia were identified from the 56 patients, with the incidence of the complication of 37.
