Background: Myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) is a common perioperative complication of heart and great vessels surgery, aggravating the original myocardial damage and seriously affecting the postoperative recovery of cardiac function. The aim of this study was to reveal the functional effects and potential mechanisms of notoginsenoside R1 (NG-R1) in myocardial cells injured by hypoxia-reoxygenation (H/R).

Methods: The rat cardiomyocyte line H9c2 was subjected to H/R with or without NG-R1 treatment.

Hydrogen is a potential green alternative to conventional energy carriers such as oil and coal. Compared with the storage of hydrogen in gaseous or liquid phases, the chemical storage of hydrogen in solid complex hydrides is safer and more effective. In this study, the complex hydride composite 2LiBH4-LiAlH with different amounts of TiF was prepared by simple ball-milling and its hydrogen storage properties were investigated.

As an excellent multifunctional single crystal, potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) is a well-known, difficult-to-process material for its soft-brittle and deliquescent nature. The surface mechanical properties are critical to the machining process; however, the characteristics of deformation behavior for KDP crystals have not been well studied. In this work, the strain rate effect on hardness was investigated on the mechanically polished tripler plane of a KDP crystal relying on nanoindentation technology.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are novel single-stranded noncoding RNAs that can decoy other RNAs to inhibit their functions. Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), caused by oncogenic Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), is a highly angiogenic and invasive vascular tumor of endothelial origin commonly found in AIDS patients. We have recently shown that KSHV-encoded viral interferon regulatory factor 1 (vIRF1) induces cell invasion, angiogenesis and cellular transformation; however, the role of circRNAs is largely unknown in the context of KSHV vIRF1.

Key Laboratory of Advanced Materials and Applications for Batteries of Zhejiang Province, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China.

Hydrogen has become a promising energy source due to its efficient and renewable properties. Although promising, hydrogen energy has not been in widespread use due to the lack of high-performance materials for hydrogen storage. Previous studies have shown that the addition of Al-based compounds to LiBH can create composites that have good properties for hydrogen storage.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a group visit intervention in comparison with the usual care for elderly patients with type 2 diabetes in a community. We randomized 109 community elderly patients with type 2 diabetes to the intervention group (n = 55) of monthly group visits sessions or to a control group (n = 54) of usual care. Repeated measures analysis of variance was used to compare the changes in HbA1, diabetes knowledge, self-efficacy, and self-management behavior in both groups.

While the application of early screening and HPV vaccines has reduced the incidence and mortality rates of cervical cancer, it remains the third most common carcinoma and fourth leading cause of cancer-associated death among women worldwide. The precise mechanisms underlying progression of cervical cancer are not fully understood at present. Here, we detected significant down-regulation of 15-hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase (HPGD) in cervical cancer tissues.

A previous study by our group found that inhibition of nischarin promotes neurite outgrowth and neuronal regeneration in Neuro-2a cells and primary cortical neurons. In recent years, more and more studies have shown that nanomaterials have good prospects in treatment of spinal cord injury. We proposed that small interfering RNA targeting nischarin (Nis-siRNA) delivered by polyethyleneimine-alginate (PEI-ALG) nanoparticles promoted motor function recovery in rats with spinal cord injury.

The expression of XB130 is associated with invasion and migration of many tumor cells, but its roles in human colorectal cancer (CRC) remains unknown. To investigate this, protein expression levels of XB130 in numerous human CRC cell lines were compared with a normal colorectal mucosa cell line by western blotting. Knockdown of XB130 using small interfering (si)RNA was performed to assess the effects on cell invasion and migration in a Transwell assay and a scratch test.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) can activate Toll-like receptor (TLR)/nitric oxide (NO) signaling pathways; however, whether the TLR/NO pathway is involved in cervical cancer caused by high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) remains unclear. In this study, 43 HR-HPV-positive patients with cervical cancer (CC group), 39 HR-HPV-positive patients with a healthy cervix (HR-HPV group), and 33 HR-HPV-negative controls were recruited. NO concentration in cervical canal and expression of inducible NO synthase (iNOS) in cervical tissues were detected.

Objective: To evaluate cluster of differentiation (CD)127 expression in T cells of patients with HIV-1 and the relationship of CD127 expression with disease progression.

Methods: We divided 139 patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) who had undergone highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) into 3 groups: patients with poor recovery (CD4T < 350/μ;L, patients with general recovery (CD4T =  350 - ∼600/μL) and patients with good recovery (CD4T > 600/μL). Counts and percentages of naïve (CD45RA) and memory (CD45RO) T cells and CD127 expression were determined using flow cytometry.

Co-infection with HIV-1 and Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is the cause of aggressive AIDS-related Kaposi's sarcoma (AIDS-KS) characterized by abnormal angiogenesis. The impact of HIV-1 and KSHV interaction on the pathogenesis and extensive angiogenesis of AIDS-KS remains unclear. Here, we explored the synergistic effect of HIV-1 Tat and KSHV oncogene Orf-K1 on angiogenesis.

The effect of highly active antiretroviral therapy on liver function in human immunodeficiency virus-infected pediatric patients with or without hepatitis virus co-infection.

J Res Med Sci

February 2015

State Key Laboratory for Diagnosis and Treatment of Infectious Disease, The First Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 310003, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Co-infection of hepatitis viruses (HBV/HCV) is prevalent among HIV-infected children in China, but its effects on liver function are not well understood.
  • A study involving 101 pediatric HIV patients with HBV/HCV co-infection compared to 44 with only HIV showed significant improvements in viral load and CD4 counts after one year of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART).
  • However, liver enzymes (ALT and AST) increased in all groups, especially in those treated with nevirapine (NVP) compared to those on efavirenz (EFV), indicating potential liver function concerns in co-infected patients.
