December 2024

National Clinical Research Center for Ocular Diseases, Eye Hospital, Wenzhou Medical University, Wenzhou, 3250027, China.

Objectives: To analyze the influence of daily activity-related factors associated with COVID-19 infection on the occurrence of acute angle closure (AAC).

Methods: A multicenter hospital-based study was conducted at 23 ophthalmic centers in 17 provincial-level regions across China to recruit patients with confirmed AAC during the post-lockdown time of COVID-19 (P-TOC) from Dec 7, 2022, to Jan 17, 2023, and three lockdown time of COVID-19 (TOC) periods, which included the TOC-2022 (Sep 7, 2022 - Dec 6, 2022), TOC-2021(Sep 7, 2021 - Jan 6, 2022) and TOC-2020 (Sep 7, 2020 - Jan 6, 2021). Patient information, including demographic, a questionnaire on daily activity changes during the AAC period, COVID-19 history, and eye examination results, was collected.

Background And Objective: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a pernicious tumor with high incidence and mortality rates. The incidence rate of NSCLC increases with age and poses a serious danger to human health. The aim of this study was to determine the mechanism by which (-)-epicatechin (EC) alleviates NSCLC.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers developed an AI model to differentiate between benign and malignant vocal fold leukoplakia (VFL) using white light and narrow-band imaging.
  • The study utilized a large dataset of images and videos for training and validation, achieving high accuracy rates in distinguishing VFL types.
  • The AI improved diagnostic performance among laryngologists, especially benefiting those with less experience; however, further refinements and testing are needed for clinical use.

Department of Endoscopy, National Cancer Center, National Clinical Research Center for Cancer, Cancer Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Peking Union Medical College, Beijing, China. Electronic address:

Objective: To develop a multi-instance learning (MIL) based artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted diagnosis models by using laryngoscopic images to differentiate benign and malignant vocal fold leukoplakia (VFL).

Methods: The AI system was developed, trained and validated on 5362 images of 551 patients from three hospitals. Automated regions of interest (ROI) segmentation algorithm was utilized to construct image-level features.

The co-regulation of the gut microbiome and host genes might play essential roles in metformin gastrointestinal intolerance.

Toxicol Appl Pharmacol

December 2023

Department of Laboratory Animal Science, Kunming Medical University, Kunming, Yunnan, China; State Key Laboratory for Conservation and Utilization of Bio-Resources in Yunnan, Yunnan University, Kunming, Yunnan, China. Electronic address:

Metformin is commonly used, but approximately 20% of patients experience gastrointestinal intolerance, leading to medication discontinuation for unclear reasons and a lack of effective management strategies. In this study, the 18 fecal and blood samples were analyzed using 16S rRNA and mRNA transcriptome, respectively. These samples included 3 fecal and 4 blood from metformin-tolerant T2D patients before and after metformin treatment (T and Ta), 3 fecal and 5 blood from metformin-intolerant T2D patients before and after treatment (TS and TSa), and 6 fecal samples from healthy controls.

Background: Laparoscopic anatomical liver resection of segment 8 (LALR-S8) remains a challenge for anatomical laparoscopic segmentectomy. Most current reports on LALR-S8 are case series using one surgical approach, and there is a lack of multicenter data on identifying intersegmental planes using different approaches. In this study, the authors aimed to elucidate the short-term results of three different approaches for LALR-S8 for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), focusing on intersegmental plane determination, and to reflect on current practice regarding different approaches at multiple centers in China.

Background:  Although anterior or posterior surgery for cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) has been extensively studied, the choice of anterior or posterior approach in four-segment CSM remains poorly studied and controversial. We compared the clinical and radiographic outcomes of four-segment CSM by posterior laminoplasty (LAMP) and anterior cervical decompression fusion (ACDF) to further explore the merits and demerits of ACDF and LAMP for four-segment CSM in this study.

Methods:  Patients with four-segment CSM who underwent ACDF or LAMP between January 2016 and June 2019 were retrospectively analyzed.
