In a recent study, Shvedov and colleagues used live two-photon imaging in transgenic zebra finches to reveal migration patterns of neuroblasts through the complex environment of the postembryonic brain. This study highlights the value of ubiquitin C/green fluorescent protein (UBC-GFP) transgenic zebra finches in studying adult neurogenesis and advances our understanding of dispersed long-distance neuronal migration in the adult brain, shedding light on this understudied phenomenon.

Quantitative Measurements of Electrocatalytic Reaction Rates with NanoSECM.

Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) has been extensively used for mapping electrocatalytic surface reactivity; however, most of the studies were carried out using micrometer-sized tips, and no quantitative kinetic experiments on the nanoscale have yet been reported to date. As the diffusion-limited current density at a nanometer-sized electrode is very high, an inner-sphere electron-transfer process occurring at a nanotip typically produces a kinetic current at any attainable overpotential. Here, we develop a theory for substrate generation/tip collection (SG/TC) and feedback modes of SECM with a kinetic tip current and use it to evaluate the rates of hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions in a neutral aqueous solution from the current-distance curves.

While the impacts of black () and brown () rats on human society are well documented-including the spread of disease, broad-scale environmental destruction, and billions spent annually on animal control-little is known about their ecology and behavior in urban areas due to the challenges of studying animals in city environments. We use isotopic and ZooMS analysis of archaeological (1550s-1900 CE) rat remains from eastern North America to provide a large-scale framework for species arrival, interspecific competition, and dietary ecology. Brown rats arrived earlier than expected and rapidly outcompeted black rats in coastal urban areas.

Magnus expansion (ME) provides a general way to expand the real-time propagator of a time-dependent Hamiltonian within the exponential such that the unitarity is satisfied at any order. We use this property and explicit integration of Lagrange interpolation formulas for the time-dependent Hamiltonian within each time interval and derive approximations that preserve unitarity for the differential time evolution operators of general time-dependent Hamiltonians. The resulting second-order approximation is the same as using the average of Hamiltonians for two end points of time.

Using prisoner height data, Moreno-Lázaro (2023) claims that Puerto Rican living standards declined after US annexation and stagnated for decades. This conclusion is not supported by the prisoner data and is inconsistent with other welfare measures that show dramatic improvement, such as per capita GDP, life expectancy, and literacy.

The diffusion model is used to calculate both the time-averaged flow of particles in stochastic media and the propagation of waves averaged over ensembles of disordered static configurations. For classical waves exciting static disordered samples, such as a layer of paint or a tissue sample, the flux transmitted through the sample may be dramatically enhanced or suppressed relative to predictions of diffusion theory when the sample is excited by a waveform corresponding to a transmission eigenchannel. Even so, it is widely assumed that the velocity of waves is irretrievably randomized in scattering media.

Objectives: The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and its primary end product, the glucocorticoid cortisol, are major components of the evolved human stress response. However, most studies have examined these systems among populations in high-income settings, which differ from the high pathogen and limited resource contexts in which the HPA axis functioned for most of human evolution.

Methods: We investigated variability in diurnal salivary cortisol patterns among 298 Indigenous Shuar from Amazonian Ecuador (147 males, 151 females; age 2-86 years), focusing on the effects of age, biological sex, and body mass index (BMI) in shaping differences in diurnal cortisol production.

Many applications in environmental and biological sensing, standoff detection, and astronomy rely on devices that operate in the mid-infrared range, where active devices can play a critical role in advancing discovery and innovation. Nanostructured graphene has been proposed for active miniaturized mid-infrared devices via excitation of tunable surface plasmons, but typically present low efficiencies due to weak coupling with free-space radiation and plasmon damping. Here we present a strategy to enhance the light-graphene coupling efficiency, in which graphene plasmons couple with gold localized plasmons, creating novel hybridized plasmonic modes.

On February 2 2023, one of the guiding lights in the field of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) for more than four decades, David E. Yoder, passed away at the age of 90. A voracious reader and gifted storyteller, David was particularly fond of a quote from George Bernard Shaw's , "You see things; and you say 'Why?' but I dream things that never were; and I say 'Why not?'" That vision led him to take on multiple leadership roles and influence the field of AAC in multiple ways.

The continuing emergence of new strains of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has renewed interest in phage therapy; however, there has been limited progress in applying phage therapy to multi-drug resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infections. In this study, we show that bacteriophage strains D29 and DS6A can efficiently lyse Mtb H37Rv in 7H10 agar plates. However, only phage DS6A efficiently kills H37Rv in liquid culture and in Mtb-infected human primary macrophages.

Home care aides play a critical role in the care of older adults, but they do this under difficult working conditions. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated aides' stress and worsened their mental health, raising the question of how agencies can better support aides. We explore how home care industry leaders in New York perceived and addressed home care aides' mental health and well-being prior to and during the pandemic through in-depth interviews conducted in 2019 ( = 8 agencies) and 2022 ( = 14 agencies).

Key epidemiological parameters, including the effective reproduction number, , and the instantaneous growth rate, , generated from an ensemble of models, have been informing public health policy throughout the COVID-19 pandemic in the four nations of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK). However, estimation of these quantities became challenging with the scaling down of surveillance systems as part of the transition from the "emergency" to "endemic" phase of the pandemic. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) COVID-19 Infection Survey (CIS) provided an opportunity to continue estimating these parameters in the absence of other data streams.

Background: Post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) is associated with worse asthma outcomes in individuals exposed to the World Trade Center (WTC) site.

Research Question: Do WTC workers with coexisting PTSD and asthma have a specific inflammatory pattern that underlies the relationship with increased asthma morbidity?

Study Design And Methods: We collected data on a cohort of WTC workers with asthma recruited from the WTC Health Program. Diagnosis of PTSD was ascertained with a Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manuel of Mental Disorders) and the severity of PTSD symptoms was assessed with the PTSD Checklist 5.
