Mental health among elite sportspeople: Lessons for medical education.

Med Teach

February 2022

University of Nottingham School Of Medicine, University of Nottingham, Queens' Medical Centre, Nottingham, UK.

Leading sportspeople across 2021, such as Simone Biles (US gymnast), Naomi Osaka (Japanese tennis player) and Ben Stokes (English cricketer), have talked openly about the pressure of performing on the highest stage, including the challenge of managing mental health when engaged in elite competition. The withdrawal of Simone Biles midway through the women's team competition at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games propelled what was seemingly a debate within sport, into what is increasing becomingly wider societal conversation around mental health. The stories of sportspeople struggling to perform at the highest level with mental health contributing to their difficulties, has inevitably prompted much reflection within medical education among teachers and students alike, about parallels in our domain around assessment, feedback and support.

Aims: The management of completely displaced fractures of the distal radius in children remains controversial. This study evaluates the outcomes of surgical and non-surgical management of 'off-ended' fractures in children with at least two years of potential growth remaining.

Methods: A total of 34 boys and 22 girls aged 0 to ten years with a closed, completely displaced metaphyseal distal radial fracture presented between 1 November 2015 and 1 January 2020.

Aims: This study evaluates the quality of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) reported in childhood fracture trials and recommends outcome measures to assess and report physical function, functional capacity, and quality of life using the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) standards.

Methods: A Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA)-compliant systematic review of OVID Medline, Embase, and Cochrane CENTRAL was performed to identify all PROMs reported in trials. A search of OVID Medline, Embase, and PsycINFO was performed to identify all PROMs with validation studies in childhood fractures.

Purpose: To evaluate demographics of survival in patients with gastroesophageal cancer so that it informs nursing practice.

Method: Data on 2215 patients diagnosed with gastroesophageal cancer who presented to a specialist referral centre between the years 2000 and 2011 were extracted from a Public Health repository. Survival time was calculated and analysed against clinical and lifestyle factors to reveal whether they had an impact on survival outcomes.

Mindful organizing in patients' contributions to primary care medication safety.

Health Expect

December 2018

NIHR Greater Manchester Patient Safety Translational Research Centre, Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (MAHSC), The University of Manchester, Manchester, UK.

Background: There is a need to ensure that the risks associated with medication usage in primary health care are controlled. To maintain an understanding of the risks, health-care organizations may engage in a process known as "mindful organizing." While this is typically conceived of as involving organizational members, it may in the health-care context also include patients.

Allele-specific overexpression in astrocytes of an Alzheimer's disease associated alpha-1-antichymotrypsin promoter polymorphism.

Division of Clinical Chemistry, Institute of Genetics, Queens' Medical Centre, University of Nottingham, Nottingham, NG7 2UH, UK.

Alpha-1-antichymotrypsin (ACT), a serine proteinase inhibitor is synthesised predominantly in the liver and in other tissues including the brain. ACT is a major component of the senile plaques (SP) characteristic of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Increased production locally in the brain may be associated with Alzheimer's disease as ACT acts as a "pathological chaperone", promoting beta-amyloid assembly into neurotoxic fibrils.

Pulsed laser ablation is a new method for deposition of thin layers of hydroxyapatite (HA) on to biomaterial surfaces. In this paper, we report activity and morphology of osteoblasts grown on HA surfaces fabricated using different laser conditions. Two sets of films were deposited from dense HA targets, at three different laser fluences: 3, 6 and 9 Jcm(-2).

The application of individualised fetal growth curves.

J Perinat Med

February 1999

PRAM, University Hospital, Queens' Medical Centre, Nottingham, U.K.

Individually adjusted or 'customised' growth charts aim to optimise the assessment of fetal growth by taking individual variation into account, and by projecting an optimal curve which delineates the potential weight gain in each pregnancy. This results in an increased detection rate of true growth restriction and a reduction in false positive diagnoses for IUGR. An adjustable standard can apply across geographical boundaries, as individual variation exceeds that between different maternity populations.

The cardiovascular (CV) responses to meal ingestion and orthostasis are well established. The effect of meal ingestion and meal composition on the CV responses to orthostasis are unknown. The effect of high carbohydrate (HC) and high fat (HF) meal ingestion on the CV responses to simulated orthostatic stress (using graded lower body subatmospheric pressure (LBSP)) was assessed in nine healthy young volunteers.

On the definition and epidemiology of atopic dermatitis.

Dermatol Clin

July 1995

Department of Dermatology, Queens' Medical Centre, Nottingham, United Kingdom.

Hospital-derived criteria for atopic dermatitis may need to be refined before being applied to epidemiologic studies. Atopic dermatitis is a common and miserable condition, and environmental factors are probably at least as important as genetic factors in determining disease expression. These findings put us one step nearer to our dream of disease prevention.

A case of pseudogout manifesting as a cervical myelopathy is presented. Surgery can offer the definitive treatment with removal of the compressing crystalline mass.
