This article outlines the experiences of a Scottish healthcare chaplain. After a student nurse expressed a dated view of chaplains, I realised it was my responsibility to refresh it. After reflection I planned, developed and implemented an interprofessional education session for nursing, midwifery and allied health professional (NMAHP) students on clinical placement.

Current literature surrounding functional outcomes after total wrist arthrodesis is limited by short follow-up or limited use of validated patient reported outcome measures (PROMs). The primary aim of this study was to describe long-term functional outcomes following wrist arthrodesis. Secondary aims were to describe the incidence of complications and patient satisfaction.

The aims of this study were to investigate the impact of diabetes mellitus on patient-reported functional outcome measures (PROMs) and satisfaction following surgical treatment of Dupuytren contracture. Preoperative and 1-year postoperative PROMs were collected prospectively over 6 years (2013-2019). Patients completed the QuickDASH score and were asked 'how normal is your hand?', recording responses on a 100-point visual analogue scale.

Aims: The aim of this study was to describe the introduction of a virtual pathway for the management of patients with a suspected fracture of the scaphoid, and to report patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and satisfaction following treatment using this service.
Methods: All adult patients who presented with a clinically suspected scaphoid fracture that was not visible on radiographs at the time of presentation during a one-year period were eligible for inclusion in the pathway. Demographic details, findings on examination, and routine four-view radiographs at the time of presentation were collected.

Perceptual disorders relating to hearing, smell, somatosensation, taste, touch, and vision commonly impair stroke survivors' ability to interpret sensory information, impacting on their ability to interact with the world. We aimed to identify and summarize the existing evidence for perceptual disorder interventions poststroke and identify evidence gaps. We searched 13 electronic databases including MEDLINE and Embase and Grey literature and performed citation tracking.

Adults with neurodevelopmental disorders frequently present to, but fit uneasily into, adult mental health services. We offer definitions of important terms related to neurodevelopmental disorders through unifying research data, medical and other viewpoints. This may improve understanding, clinical practice and development of neurodevelopmental disorder pathways within adult mental health services.

Study Design: Retrospective cohort BACKGROUND: Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and structural equation modelling (SEM) assess relationships between questionnaire items and the constructs ("factors") measured by a questionnaire. The QuickDASH has not been subjected to these analyses in Dupuytren's disease.
Purpose: To undertake EFA and SEM to identify the factors measured by the QuickDASH in patients with Dupuytren's disease.

Objectives: We compare the optical quality and design characteristic a new low cost solar powered binocular indirect ophthalmoscope (BIO), Holo, to Keeler BIO.
Methods: Twenty-four participants each examined 10 simulation eyes using both the Holo and the Keeler BIO with a 30-diopter condensing lens. Number of Lea symbols printed on the retina of simulation eyes seen and time taken to identify them was recorded.

The primary aim of this study was to describe the long-term patient reported outcomes following surgical repair of acute injuries to the thumb metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint ulnar collateral ligament (UCL). The secondary aims were to describe the long-term health related quality of life, patient satisfaction and complication rate. From a single surgeon series, 30 patients were identified over an 11 year period (February 2000-February 2011).

Background: The lack of validated and responsive outcome measures in the management of frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) significantly limits assessment of disease progression and treatment response over time.
Aim: To understand how FFA extent and progression is currently assessed in UK specialist centres, to validate components of the International FFA Cooperative Group (IFFACG) statement on FFA assessment, and to identify pragmatic advice to improve FFA management in clinic.
Methods: Consultant dermatologists with a specialist interest in hair loss (n = 17) were invited to take part.

In 2019, Scotland reported the highest number of drug deaths amongst EU countries. Of the 1,264 drug deaths reported in 2019, 94% were related to polysedative use. Studies have proposed a relationship between opioid use and cardiovascular disease.

Objective: Chronic exposure to illicit opioid drugs can cause serious health and social problems. However, less is known about the differential effect of various opioid treatments, such as methadone and buprenorphine, on neurocognitive domains such as compulsivity and impulsivity, despite their relevance to the treatment of opioid dependence.
Methods: A total of 186 participants were recruited with a cross-sectional design: i) illicit heroin users (n = 27), ii) former heroin users stabilized on methadone MMT (n = 48), iii) a buprenorphine maintenance treatment (BMT) group (n = 18), iv) an abstinent (ABS) group with a history of opioid dependence who were previously stabilized on MMT or BMT (n = 29) and v) healthy controls (HC) (n = 64).

The primary aim of this study was to identify factors associated with nonresponse to routinely collected patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) after hand surgery. The secondary aim was to investigate the impact of nonresponder bias on postoperative PROMs. We identified 4357 patient episodes for which the patients received pre- and 1-year postoperative questionnaires.

Background: Socioeconomic deprivation is known to increase the risk of late presentation of many diseases. This is the largest study in United Kingdom investigating the relationship between socioeconomic deprivation and acute primary angle closure (APAC).
Methods: A retrospective review of case notes was conducted of 718 consecutive patients who underwent laser peripheral iridotomy (LPI) in Edinburgh (Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion) and Fife (Queen Margaret Hospital) between 2015 and 2019.

Background: Dupuytren's contracture was recently designated a prescribed occupational disease when it occurs in patients with previous hand-arm vibration (HAV) exposure.
Aims: The aims of this study were to describe the impact of self-reported HAV exposure on upper limb function and satisfaction following surgery for Dupuytren's contracture.
Methods: Paired pre- and postoperative Quick version of Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (QuickDASH) and patient satisfaction questionnaires were prospectively collected from all patients undergoing surgery for Dupuytren's contracture over a 6-year period.

Background: Owing to the increasing prevalence of diabetes, the workload related to diabetic macular oedema and proliferative diabetic retinopathy is rising, making it difficult for hospital eye services to meet demands.
Objective: The objective was to evaluate the diagnostic performance, cost-effectiveness and acceptability of a new pathway using multimodal imaging interpreted by ophthalmic graders to detect reactivation of diabetic macular oedema/proliferative diabetic retinopathy in previously treated patients.
Design: This was a prospective, case-referent, cross-sectional diagnostic study.

Backgrounds & Aims: Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is a chronic liver disease in which autoimmune destruction of the small intrahepatic bile ducts eventually leads to cirrhosis. Many patients have inadequate response to licensed medications, motivating the search for novel therapies. Previous genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and meta-analyses (GWMA) of PBC have identified numerous risk loci for this condition, providing insight into its aetiology.
