Background And Aims: Amiodarone is frequently prescribed alongside direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in atrial fibrillation (AF). There are concerns regarding drug-drug interactions (DDIs) between amiodarone and DOACs. The literature is conflicting on the clinical implications of this DDI, hence we conducted a meta-analysis to compare bleeding risk among patients receiving DOACs, with and without concurrent amiodarone.

Article Synopsis
  • The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted the Canadian healthcare system, particularly increasing concerns about physician burnout among medical oncologists (MOs).
  • The Canadian Association of Medical Oncologists conducted four surveys between May 2020 and March 2022 to assess the effects of the pandemic on the MO workforce, finding high levels of dissatisfaction with work-life balance and increased workloads.
  • The surveys revealed that a significant portion of MOs, particularly those with over 10 years of experience, are contemplating retirement or reducing work hours, highlighting the need to address wellness and job satisfaction to maintain a stable workforce.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the role of antigen-presenting dendritic cells (DCs) and monocytes in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and their potential to promote immune tolerance in treatment-naïve patients.
  • - Researchers found that RA patients had reduced levels of certain DC subsets and low expression of tolerogenic markers, which correlated with higher disease activity and poor response to methotrexate (MTX) treatment.
  • - The results indicate that lower frequencies of tolerogenic IDO1-expressing DCs and decreased levels of soluble CTLA-4 can predict non-responsiveness to MTX, highlighting their importance in managing RA.

The Utility of Laboratory Investigations for the Assessment and Management of Rheumatic Immune Related Adverse Events.

Rheum Dis Clin North Am

May 2024

Department of Medicine, University of Alberta, 8-130 Clinical Sciences Building, 11350 83 Avenue NW, Edmonton, Alberta T6G 2G3, Canada. Electronic address:

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have greatly improved survival of several cancers with historically very poor prognosis. ICIs act by stimulating the patient's own immune system to fight cancer. Simultaneously, this immune activation can lead to immune-related adverse events (irAEs), including rheumatic manifestations (Rh-irAEs).

Article Synopsis
  • Metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) patients treated with immunotherapies (IO) show better overall survival outcomes compared to those treated with targeted therapies (TT), particularly in those with or without sarcomatoid features.
  • A study involving 1,202 patients assessed the impact of different first-line systemic therapies, revealing that IO treatment led to a significantly longer median survival than TT for both nonsarcomatoid (72 vs. 48 months) and sarcomatoid (48 vs. 18 months) patients.
  • The study utilized real-world data from the IMDC database and applied statistical models to ensure balanced comparisons, ultimately highlighting the effectiveness of IO in metastatic RCC treatment.

The Centre for Disease Control recommends vaccination of children against SARS-CoV-2 to reduce the severity of COVID-19 disease and reduce the likelihood of associated complications. Vaccination of children requires the consent of parents or guardians, and levels of consent may ebb and flow over the course of the pandemic. This exploratory study examines predictors of parental intentions to vaccinate their children and the speed with which they would have them vaccinated during the fifth wave of the pandemic when vaccines were just being approved for use in children using a convenience sample of 641 parents reporting on 962 children.

Unexpected complication after reverse shoulder arthroplasty: Brachial artery pseudoaneurysm: A case report.

Shoulder Elbow

November 2023

Orthopaedic Upper Limb and Hand Surgery, Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Center, Halifax Infirmary (Room 4855), 1796 Summer Street, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada B3H 3A7.

Pseudoaneurysm should be acknowledged as a possible but infrequent postoperative complication after shoulder arthroplasty which could be easily misdiagnosed. It is important that the upper-extremity surgeon suspects this problem in the follow-up assessment for appropriate management. In this paper, we present an unusual case of brachial artery pseudoaneurysm in the early postoperative period after reverse shoulder arthroplasty.

Background: Severe complicated intra-abdominal sepsis (SCIAS) has an increasing incidence with mortality rates over 80% in some settings. Mortality typically results from disruption of the gastrointestinal tract, progressive and self-perpetuating bio-mediator generation, systemic inflammation, and multiple organ failure. A further therapeutic option may be open abdomen (OA) management with negative peritoneal pressure therapy (NPPT) to remove inflammatory ascites and attenuate the systemic damage from SCIAS, although there are definite risks of leaving the abdomen open whenever it might possibly be closed.
