Comparing Urethral Stricture Rates Following Bipolar and Monopolar Transurethral Resection of the Prostate: A Retrospective Study.

Aim The aim is to compare the incidence of urethral strictures and other complications following monopolar and bipolar transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). Method We conducted a retrospective study to compare patients who underwent bipolar TURP with those who underwent monopolar TURP between 2017 and 2023. The collected data included demographics, age, history of urethral stricture, prostate size, operation duration, and postoperative complications, such as blood transfusion, transurethral resection (TUR) syndrome, and other relevant data points.

There is growing interest in the potential exploitation of the gut microbiome as a diagnostic tool in medicine, but evidence supporting its clinical usefulness is scarce. An increasing number of commercial providers offer direct-to-consumer microbiome diagnostic tests without any consensus on their regulation or any proven value in clinical practice, which could result in considerable waste of individual and health-care resources and potential drawbacks in the clinical management of patients. We convened an international multidisciplinary expert panel to standardise best practices of microbiome testing for clinical implementation, including recommendations on general principles and minimum requirements for their provision, indications, pre-testing protocols, method of analyses, reporting of results, and potential clinical value.

Methods: An observational study was conducted in hospitalised adult (≥18 years old) CKD patients in the UK using WHO prescribing indicators, from November 2021 to April 2022 in a large teaching hospital in England from admission until discharge.

Outcomes of Patients With Five or More Brain Metastases Treated With Stereotactic Radiosurgery From 2014 to 2019: A UK Series.

Aims: Treatment with stereotactic radiosurgery/radiotherapy (SRS/SRT) is standard practice in selected patients with small numbers of brain metastases (BMs). It is less accepted in those with ≥5 BMs, due to the lack of a prospective evidence base. While randomised trials are ongoing, we present the experience of a single UK cancer centre in using SRS/SRT for patients with 5 or more BMs without whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT).

Therefore, the aim of current study was to evaluate the impact of diabetes on times delays, reperfusion and mortality in a contemporary STEMI population undergoing PPCI, including treatment during the COVID pandemic.

Methods And Results: The ISACS-STEMI COVID-19 is a large-scale retrospective multicenter registry involving PPCI centers from Europe, Latin America, South-East Asia and North-Africa, including patients treated from 1st of March until June 30, 2019 and 2020.

Prospective surveillance and early intervention to prevent chronic breast cancer-related arm lymphedema-what are the barriers?

Up to one in five early breast cancer patients develop chronic upper limb lymphedema after breast cancer treatments. This treatment complication is irreversible and can significantly impact the quality of life of breast cancer survivors. The model of prospective surveillance and early intervention has emerged as a potential strategy to prevent the development of this debilitating treatment-related complication.

Measuring the effectiveness of a radiology-based lecture series on both confidence and career prospects of UK-based undergraduate medical students: a survey-based quantitative study.

Aims: Studies investigating Radiology Teaching within the undergraduate population suggest that medical students do not feel adequately trained in radiological scan interpretation. This study aims to address this shortfall by designing and evaluating a longitudinal teaching series based upon the nationally recognised RCR Curriculum. By doing this, a framework can be provided for other centres to reproduce and develop their own teaching programme.
