A 76-year-old man developed a hemoperitoneum after ERCP for choledocholithiasis. He underwent a laparotomy and splenectomy for a capsular tear at the splenic hilum, a rare complication of ERCP. "Bowing" of the endoscope with torsion on the greater curvature of the stomach may lead to shear forces causing splenic injury.

Novel mechanisms of resistance to vemurafenib in melanoma - V600E B-Raf reversion and switching VEGF-A splice isoform expression.

Am J Cancer Res

January 2015

Microvascular Research Laboratories, University of Bristol Bristol, UK, BS2 8EJ ; Cancer Biology, Division of Cancer and Stem Cells, School of Medicine, University of Nottingham, Queen's Medical Centre Nottingham, UK, NG7 2UH.

Article Synopsis
  • Targeting the B-Raf(V600E) mutation in melanoma with vemurafenib improves progression-free survival, but resistance to the drug develops over time.
  • VEGF-A plays a crucial role in angiogenesis and its activity is influenced by RNA splicing; certain pro-angiogenic isoforms are found to increase in various cancers, including melanoma.
  • In experiments, vemurafenib decreased pro-angiogenic VEGF-A markers in B-Raf(V600E) cells while increasing these markers in wild-type B-Raf cells, suggesting a potential mechanism for tumor growth and angiogenesis in mutated melanomas.

A siphon is suggested to support cerebral blood flow but appears not to be established because internal jugular venous (IJV) pressure is close to zero in upright humans. Thus, in eleven young healthy males, IJV pressure was 9 ± 1 mmHg (mean ± SE) when supine and fell to 3 ± 1 mmHg when seated, and middle cerebral artery mean blood velocity (MCA Vmean; P < 0.007) and the near-infrared spectroscopy-determined frontal lobe oxygenation (ScO2; P = 0.

Cell Biophysics Group, Institute of Biophysics, Imaging and Optical Science, School of Life Sciences, University of Nottingham, University Park Nottingham, United Kingdom.

Previous mass spectrometry analysis of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) has allowed the identification of a panel of molecular markers that are associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD). The panel comprises Amyloid beta, Apolipoprotein E, Fibrinogen alpha chain precursor, Keratin type I cytoskeletal 9, Serum albumin precursor, SPARC-like 1 protein and Tetranectin. Here we report the development and implementation of immunoassays to measure the abundance and diagnostic capacity of these putative biomarkers in matched lumbar CSF and blood plasma samples taken in life from individuals confirmed at post-mortem as suffering from AD (n = 10) and from screened 'cognitively healthy' subjects (n = 18).

Clinical Neurology Research Group, Division of Clinical Neuroscience, University of Nottingham School of Medicine, Queen's Medical Centre Nottingham, NG7 2UH, UK.

IIH is a condition of raised intracranial pressure of unknown pathogenesis, which is most commonly seen in young overweight women. This study was designed to confirm and extend previous reports by our and other groups showing increased inflammatory cytokine expression in patients with IIH. We analyzed the concentrations of 14 cytokines (IL-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12p70, IL-17, IL-22, IL-23, IFNγ, TNFα, TGFβ, and osteopontin) in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 17 patients with IIH and 53 patients with other neurological conditions.

Soft tissue tumors include neoplasms of specific and unknown lineages, and, therefore, lineage markers of smooth muscle, skeletal muscle, endothelial, epithelial and Schwann cells have proven useful in everyday practice. However, groups of tumors remain that are defined essentially on grounds of histology; others can be defined by molecular genetic studies. The complex distribution patterns of many antigens and loss of some differentiation antigens in malignant tumors often necessitate the use of panels of antibodies.

Evidence for a role of D1 dopamine receptors in d-amphetamine's effect on timing behaviour in the free-operant psychophysical procedure.

Psychopharmacology (Berl)

April 2006

Psychopharmacology Section, Division of Psychiatry, University of Nottingham, Room B109, Medical School, Queen's Medical Centre Nottingham, Nottingham, NG7 2UH, UK.

Rationale: Temporal differentiation of operant behaviour is sensitive to dopaminergic manipulations. Studies using the fixed-interval peak procedure implicated D2 dopamine receptors in these effects. Less is known about the effects of dopaminergic manipulations on temporal differentiation in other timing schedules.

Mutations in mammalian and Drosophila Hel308 and PolQ paralogues cause genome instability but their helicase functions are mysterious. By in vivo and in vitro analysis, we show that Hel308 from archaea (Hel308a) may act at stalled replication forks. Introducing hel308a into Escherichia coli dnaE strains that conditionally accumulate stalled forks caused synthetic lethality, an effect indistinguishable from E.

The government is trying to criminalise 'aggravated' trespass and many forms of protest. It also wants to repeal the 1968 Caravans Act, which obliges councils to provide sites for gypsy families, to abolish the right to remain silent when arrested, to give the police new powers to arrest those who they think might be ravers, protestors or travellers (including gypsies) and the power to form exclusion zones, thus limiting totally the rights to freedom of movement and of association.
