Context: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, renamed metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), is the most common cause of chronic liver disease with an estimated worldwide prevalence of 30.1% while clinical practice observations reflect a disproportionately lower prevalence of 1.9%, indicating a condition that is underrecognized in clinical care settings.

Background: The traditional definition of massive transfusion is 10 red blood cell units transfused within 24 hr. This definition has been faulted for excluding patients who die early from exsanguination. Alternative major bleeding definitions in the trauma literature include time-based (e.

Introduction: With severely inflamed gallbladders, laparoscopic cholecystectomy can be difficult and may require procedures like subtotal cholecystectomy (SC). Few studies exist comparing SC and total cholecystectomy (TC) in the setting of severe biliary inflammation. This meta-analysis aims to compare SC and TC for difficult gallbladders.

Cannabinoids are a major class of compounds produced by the plant Cannabis sativa. Previous work has demonstrated that the main cannabinoids cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) can have some beneficial effects on pain, inflammation, epilepsy, and chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. While CBD and THC represent the two major plant cannabinoids, some hemp varieties with enzymatic deficiencies produce mainly cannabigerolic acid (CBGA).

Background: Both sepsis-induced cardiomyopathy and worsening of preexisting cardiac disease can contribute to circulatory shock in septic patients. The early use of pulmonary artery catheter (PAC) could play a pivotal role in the management of sepsis-associated cardiogenic shock. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the impact of early invasive hemodynamic monitoring with PAC in patients with sepsis-associated cardiogenic shock.

Unlabelled: In this case report, we describe a 23-year-old male with Ebstein's anomaly who experienced out-of-hospital cardiac arrest due to commotio cordis following cliff diving. The patient previously underwent a Cone procedure and re-do reduction tricuspid valvuloplasty. Comprehensive investigations revealed no new ischemic events or structural abnormalities.

Background: Distinguishing an isolated metastatic dural tumor from a meningioma on imaging is challenging and may lead to a delay in treatment. Here, we present the first known case of isolated, solitary dural metastasis from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) mimicking a meningioma.
Case Description: A 64-year-old male with a history of liver cirrhosis presented with a 5.

Objective: The G -allele of FOXO3 SNP rs2802292 , which is associated with human resilience and longevity, has been shown to attenuate the impact of hypertension on the risk of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). We sought to determine whether the FOXO3 G -allele similarly attenuates the impact of hypertension on the risk of cerebral microinfarcts (CMI).
Methods: From a prospective population-based cohort of American men of Japanese ancestry from the Kuakini Honolulu Heart Program (KHHP) and Kuakini Honolulu-Asia Aging Study (KHAAS) that had brain autopsy data, age-adjusted prevalence of any CMI on brain autopsy was assessed.

The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused unprecedented disruption in health care systems and may continue to do so. Nurses, the largest contingent of the nation's health care workforce, have borne the brunt of those disruptions, which have caused increased workload and resultant occupational stress. This study identified differences in nurses' occupational stress by practice specialty, time spent caring for patients with COVID-19, and nurses' demographic characteristics.

Objective: In clinical practice, patients with eosinophilic myocarditis (EM) may forgo the gold standard diagnostic procedure, endomyocardial biopsy (EMB), although it is highly recommended in guidelines. This systematic review aims to summarise current approaches in diagnosing and treating EM with a particular emphasis on the utilisation and value of alternative diagnostic methods.
Methods: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement, we searched MEDLINE and EMBASE for all peer-reviewed articles using the keywords "eosinophilic myocarditis" from their inception to 10 September 2022.

Studies that examine racial disparities in health outcomes often include analyses that account or adjust for baseline differences in co-morbid conditions. Often, these conditions are defined as dichotomous (Yes/No) variables, and few analyses include clinical and/or laboratory data that could allow for more nuanced estimates of disease severity. However, disease severity - not just prevalence - can differ substantially by race and is an underappreciated mechanism for health disparities.

Administration by EMS has been facilitated by developing protocols and standing orders informed by these data. In this study, patterns of TXA use by EMS agencies serving a large level 1 trauma center were examined.

Objectives: To describe the current use and outcomes of temporary mechanical circulatory support (MCS) in patients with sepsis-associated cardiogenic shocks with and without acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in the United States.
Design: Retrospective cohort study.
Setting: The National Inpatient Sample database from 2017 to 2019.
Objective: To (1) evaluate changes in student pharmacists' professional identity during a curriculum prior to advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs) and (2) describe the components of a pre-APPE curriculum that positively and negatively influenced students' professional identity formation (PIF).
Methods: The University of Washington School of Pharmacy launched a new curriculum in 2019 featuring components intentionally designed to support students' PIF. The Macleod-Clark Professional Identity Scale (MCPIS) was administered to the class of 2023 before starting pharmacy school (pre) and upon completion of the pre-APPE curriculum (post).

Background: People living with HIV (PLWH) have higher rates of chronic kidney disease (CKD) compared with HIV-uninfected individuals. The pathogenesis of CKD in HIV remains poorly understood but is likely from a combination of various factors, such as traditional comorbidities, prolonged antiretroviral therapy, immune dysregulation, and direct HIV effect on the kidneys. We evaluated plasma galectin-3 (Gal-3), a circulating marker of fibrosis, and its association with renal function.

Background: Impaired coagulation is associated with elevated risk of mortality in trauma patients. Prior studies have demonstrated increased mortality in patients with hyperfibrinolysis (HF) and fibrinolysis shutdown (SD). In addition, prior studies have demonstrated no effect of tranexamic acid (TXA) on fibrinolysis phenotypes.

Mechanical disorders of the cervicocerebral circulation (MDCC) are conditions in which neurological symptoms result from a disturbance of cerebral blood flow attributable to external mechanical forces exerted on extracranial blood vessels by adjacent musculoskeletal structures during head movement that is presumably within a physiological range. The disease spectrum includes bow hunter's syndrome, carotid-type Eagle syndrome, and various dynamic venous compression syndromes. These conditions have distinct phenotypes in children which differ from those expressed in older adults.

Background: Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is the second leading cause of death globally. Mechanical thrombectomy (MT) has improved patient prognosis but expedient treatment is still necessary to minimize anoxic injury. Lower intraoperative body temperature decreases cerebral oxygen demand, but the role of hypothermia in treatment of AIS with MT is unclear.

France is in the initial stage of development of the advanced practice nursing role. Social capital is essential to move this development forward, as evidenced by similar global movements resulting in the establishment of the advanced practice role of nurses. A pilot project examined the general response of French citizens (social capital) to the idea of advanced nursing practice in their country.
