Background: The rate of vitamin D deficiency (VDD) in critically ill children worldwide has been estimated at 50%. These children are at risk of multiple organ dysfunction, chronic morbidity, and decreased health related quality of life (HRQL). Pediatric and adult ICU clinical trials suggest that VDD is associated with worse clinical outcomes, although data from supplementation trials are limited and inconclusive.

Background: Little is known about the effect of sex on functional status decline in aortic valve stenosis (AS) patients.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the changes in functional status according to sex in patients with mild-to-moderate AS and its association with the composite of death or aortic valve replacement (AVR).
Methods: We included patients with mild-to-moderate AS prospectively recruited in the PROGRESSA (Metabolic Determinants of the Progression of Aortic Stenosis) study (NCT01679431).

Background: In patients with low-gradient (LG) aortic stenosis (AS), confirming disease severity and indication of intervention often requires dobutamine stress echocardiography (DSE) or aortic valve calcium scoring by computed tomography. We hypothesized that the mean transvalvular pressure gradient to effective orifice area ratio (MG/EOA, in mm Hg/cm) measured during rest echocardiography identifies true-severe AS (TSAS) and is associated with clinical outcomes in patients with low-flow, LG-AS.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic value of MG/EOA ratio.

Objectives: Radiomics can predict patient outcomes by automatically extracting a large number of features from medical images. This study is aimed to investigate the sensitivity of radiomics features extracted from 2 different pipelines, namely, Pyradiomics and RaCat, as well as the impact of gray-level discretization on the discovery of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) biomarkers.
Methods: A retrospective cohort of 164 non-small cell lung cancer patients administered with ICIs was used in this study.

has emerged as a significant healthcare-associated pathogen due to its multidrug-resistant nature. Ongoing constraints in the discovery and provision of new antifungals create an urgent imperative to design effective remedies to this pressing global blight. Herein, we screened a chemical library and identified aryl-carbohydrazide analogs with potent activity against both and the most prevalent human fungal pathogen, .

Background: Heart failure (HF) and inflammation have a bidirectional relation leading to activation and adaptation of multiple cellular lines, including leucocyte subtypes and platelets. We aimed to assess and compare the predictive value of the neutrophil-lymphocyte (NLR), monocyte-lymphocyte (MLR) and platelet-lymphocyte (PLR) ratios for all-cause long-term mortality in HF.
Methods: This is an observational retrospective cohort study that included patients from the HI-HF cohort that survived the initial hospitalization.

Background: Single ventricle palliation may be performed in patients with congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries due to hypoplasia of 1 ventricle or anatomic complexity rendering biventricular repair unfeasible. There have been only a few small studies of the outcomes of single ventricle palliation in the setting of congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries.
Methods: A multicenter, international, retrospective cohort study of patients with congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries undergoing single ventricle palliation was conducted in 29 tertiary hospitals in 6 countries from 1990 to 2018.

Background: We aimed to derive a clinical decision rule to identify patients with transient ischemic attack (TIA) or minor stroke most likely to benefit from echocardiography.
Methods: This multicentre prospective cohort study enrolled adults diagnosed with TIA/minor stroke in the emergency department who underwent echocardiograms within 90 days, from 13 Canadian academic emergency departments from October 2006 to May 2017. Our outcome was clinically significant echocardiogram findings.

Food addiction (FA) and binge eating disorder (BED) co-occur and share compulsive eating symptoms. When using an FA measure, it is important to evaluate its performance in a population presenting compulsive eating. The study aims to validate the Addiction-like Eating Behavior Scale (AEBS) among a clinical sample characterized by compulsive eating and overweight/obesity and to evaluate its incremental validity over the Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.

Rugby players must develop excellent levels of conditioning during adolescence. However, this pivotal period of life is also characterized by a surge in biological growth, which further increases the energy and nutritional requirements of this population. This study examined within-individual differences in energy intake (EI) and energy balance (EB) of 46 young rugby players during a pre-season micro-cycle.

The innate immune response is triggered rapidly after injury and its spatiotemporal dynamics are critical for regeneration; however, many questions remain about its exact role. Here we show that MyD88, a key component of the innate immune response, controls not only the inflammatory but also the fibrotic response during zebrafish cardiac regeneration. We find in cryoinjured myd88 ventricles a significant reduction in neutrophil and macrophage numbers and the expansion of a collagen-rich endocardial population.

Background And Objectives: Idiopathic/isolated REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) has been strongly linked to neurodegenerative synucleinopathies such as Parkinson disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, and multiple system atrophy. However, there have been increasing reports of RBD as a presenting feature of serious and treatable autoimmune syndromes, particularly IGLON5. This study's objective was to investigate the frequency of autoantibodies in a large cohort of participants with iRBD.

Background: Moderate secondary mitral regurgitation (SMR) represents a subgroup of heart failure (HF) patients with treatment restricted to medical therapy. Outcomes in patients with moderate SMR treated with mitral transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (M-TEER) are less well known.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the safety and effectiveness of M-TEER in subjects with moderate SMR using the EXPANDed studies.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension affects females more frequently than males, and there are known sex-related differences in the lungs. However, normal sex-related differences in pulmonary vascular structure remain incompletely described. We aimed to contrast computed tomography-derived pulmonary vascular volume and its distribution within the lungs of healthy adult females and males.

The present study tested the hypothesis that greater protein expression of tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) and neointimal growth secondary to a reduction of medial elastin content represent sex-dependent events limiting aortic vessel expansion in females. TIMP-1 protein levels were higher in the ascending aorta of female versus male patients diagnosed with a bicuspid aortic valve (BAV).

Aim: Having a child with congenital heart disease (CHD) is stressful for parents, but research on the impact this stress can have on child development has been lacking. We investigated the associations between parenting stress when children were infants and neurodevelopmental outcomes in toddlers with CHD.

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) poses a major risk for heart failure, myocardial infarction, and stroke. Several studies have linked SCN5A variants to AF, but their precise mechanistic contribution remains unclear. Human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) provide a promising platform for modeling AF-linked SCN5A variants and their functional alterations.
