Background: Chinese cancer survivors are not doing well in returning to work. Peer support, as an external coping resource to help cancer survivors return to work, brings together members of the lay community with similar stressors or problems for mutual support. Peer volunteers have not received systematic training, so inappropriate language in the support process can often cause secondary damage to both the peer and the cancer survivor.

Department of Neurosurgery, Institute of Brain Diseases, Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou Avenue North No.1838, Guangzhou, 510515, Guangdong, People's Republic of China.

The identification of oncogenic gene fusions in diffuse gliomas may serve as potential therapeutic targets and prognostic indicators, representing a novel strategy for treating gliomas consistent with the principles of personalized medicine. This study identified detectable oncogene fusions in glioma patients through an integrated analysis of genomic and transcriptomic data, which encompassed whole exon sequencing and next-generation RNA sequencing. In addition, this study also conducted a comparison of the genetic characteristics, tumor microenvironment, mutation burden and survival between glioma patients with or without gene fusions.

Background: Cellular histones are DNA-binding nuclear proteins involved in chromatin remodelling and regulation of gene expression. However, extracellular histones act as damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) and contribute to multiorgan damage in conditions with sepsis and diseases with acute critical illnesses. Alongside, histones are associated with thrombocytopenia due to dysfunctional platelets that regulate hemostasis and thrombosis.

Redox imbalance, including excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) caused by mitochondrial dysfunction and insufficient endogenous antioxidant capacity, is the primary cause of myocardial ischemia‒reperfusion (I/R) injury. In the exploration of reducing myocardial I/R injury, it is found that protecting myocardial mitochondrial function after reperfusion not only reduces ROS bursts but also inhibits cell apoptosis triggered by the release of cytochrome c. Additionally, nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is considered a potential therapeutic target for treating myocardial I/R injury by enhancing the cellular antioxidant capacity through the induction of endogenous antioxidant enzymes.

Contamination of retail market meat with extended-spectrum beta-lactamase genes in Vietnam.

The United Graduate School of Drug Discovery and Medical Information Sciences, Gifu University, Gifu, Japan. Electronic address:

The contamination of retail meat with antibiotic-resistant bacteria poses a substantial public health risk because of the potential spread of these bacteria within communities. The contamination of retail meat with extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing bacteria was investigated in four cities in Vietnam using real-time PCR, employing ESBL marker genes. This method provides a more comprehensive assessment of ESBL-producing bacterial contamination in meat samples than culture-based methods because it directly detects resistance genes from the extracted sample DNA.

Control of metalloenzyme activity using photopharmacophores.

Metalloenzymes are responsible for numerous physiological and pathological processes in living organisms; however, there are very few FDA-approved metalloenzyme-targeting therapeutics (only ~ 67 FDA-approved metalloenzyme inhibitors as of 2020, less than ~ 5 % of all FDA-approved therapeutics). Most metalloenzyme inhibitors have been developed to target the catalytic metal centers in metalloenzymes the incorporation of metal-binding groups. Light-controlled inhibition of metalloenzymes has been used as a means to specifically activate and inactivate inhibitor engagement at a desired location and time light irradiation, allowing for precise spatiotemporal control over metalloenzyme activity.
