Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the causative agent for coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia. Little is known about the kinetics, tissue distribution, cross-reactivity, and neutralization antibody response in patients with COVID-19. Two groups of patients with RT-PCR-confirmed COVID-19 were enrolled in this study: 12 severely ill patients in intensive care units who needed mechanical ventilation and 11 mildly ill patients in isolation wards.

Dilated cardiomyopathy and aldosteronoma: a causal link?

The aim of this study is to reveal the causal relationship between dilated cardiomyopathy and aldosteronoma. A 44-year-old male dilated cardiomyopathy patient with aldosteronoma, who demonstrated a worse cardiac function after 1 year therapy with optimized dosage of sacubirtil/valsartan, furosemide, metoprolol, and spironolactone. The patient shows a promising prognosis after aldosteronoma removal procedure.

Mangiferin has been identified as a potent cardioprotective factor that enhances high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in plasma. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of mangiferin on macrophage cholesterol efflux and the development of atherosclerosis. The results showed that mangiferin injection significantly decreased atherosclerotic plaque size, and reduced plasma levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglyceride, and total cholesterol in apoE knockout mice, whereas reverse cholesterol transport efficiency and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were enhanced.

Bongkrekic acid (BKA) is a tricarboxylic fatty acid that inhibits adenine nucleotide translocase as a kind of mitochondrial toxins. BKA is produced by the bacterium pathovar . An investigation was performed to determine the source of possible BKA poisoning of a family in H City, Guangdong Province, People's Republic of China, who consumed a commercially produced rice noodle product that was not fermented or noticeably spoiled.

Background: Healthcare workers are often exposed to stressful working conditions at work which affect their quality of life. The study investigated the relationship between psychosocial risk factors, stress, burnout, and quality of life among primary healthcare workers in general medical practice in Qingyuan and Chaozhou cities in Guangdong province.

Method: The cross-sectional study was conducted in 108 primary health facilities including 36 community health centers (CHCs) across two developing cities in Guangdong province.

Background: Drowning is a leading cause of accidental death in children under 14 years of age in Guangdong, China. We developed a statistical model to classify the risk of drowning among children based on the risk factors.

Methods: A multiple-stage cluster random sampling was employed to select the students in Grades 3 to 9 in two townships in Qingyuan, Guangdong.

CSTP1 inhibits IL-6 expression through targeting Akt/FoxO3a signaling pathway in bladder cancer cells.

CSTP1, a recently identified protein phosphotase, is frequently repressed in bladder cancers. Previous results showed that CSTP1 over-expression inhibited cell cycle progression and promoted apoptosis through dephosphorylating Akt kinase at Ser473 site in bladder cancer cells, but the mechanisms how CSTP1 exerted tumor suppressive activity remains unclear. In this study, we analyzed the gene expression profile changes that affected by CSTP1 overexpression by microarray, and reported that CSTP1 decreased IL-6 expression/secretion in bladder cancer cells and re-expression of IL-6 abrogated CSTP1's tumor suppressive activity.

Prevalence and factors associated with tinnitus: data from adult residents in Guangdong province, South of China.

There is a lack of national studies on tinnitus in China and data based on a large sample size from multiple areas of the country. A cross-sectional study was carried out in Guangdong province from October 2015 to February 2016. In the study, tinnitus was defined as the presence of ringing, buzzing or other sounds in the ears in the past one year.
