Introduction: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is one of the most common organ dysfunction in sepsis, and increases the risk of unfavourable outcomes. Renal replacement therapy (RRT) is the predominant treatment for sepsis-associated AKI (SAKI). However, to date, no prospective randomised study has adequately addressed whether initiating RRT earlier will attenuate renal injury and improve the outcome of sepsis.

The epitranscriptome of long noncoding RNAs in metabolic diseases.

Clin Chim Acta

April 2021

The Second Affiliated Hospital of Guilin Medical University, Guangxi Key Laboratory of Diabetic Systems Medicine, Guilin, Guangxi 541100, China. Electronic address:

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have abundant content and extensive functions that regulate the expression of genes at multiple levels. Recently, transcriptome-wide analysis confirmed that RNA can undergo various chemical modifications in response to stimulation by the environment that further determine the action mechanisms of RNAs and expand the diversity of the transcriptome. Modifications that occur in lncRNAs can affect their expression and the regulation of downstream molecules by changing the secondary structure, splicing, degradation or molecular stability of lncRNAs.

The objective of this study was to assess the safety, tolerability, and relative immunogenicity of SSS07 after multiple single subcutaneous (SC) doses in healthy volunteers.

Methods: A total of 71 healthy volunteers were randomized to six sequential ascending-dose groups (5, 15, 30, 50, 75, and 100 mg), and except for the 100 mg group that only had one subject who received a placebo, all of the other groups included two placebo-control subjects.

Despite the widespread clinical application of chemotherapeutic anticancer drugs, their adverse side effects and inefficient performances remain ongoing issues. A drug delivery system (DDS) designed for a specific cancer may therefore overcome the drawbacks of single chemotherapeutic drugs and provide precise and synergistical cancer treatment by introducing exclusive stimulus responsiveness and combined chemotherapy properties. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of a supramolecular drug delivery assembly 1 constructed by orthogonal self-assembly technique in aqueous media specifically for application in liver cancer therapy.

LncRNA-modulated autophagy in plaque cells: a new paradigm of gene regulation in atherosclerosis?

Aging (Albany NY)

November 2020

The Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, Qingyuan City People’s Hospital, Qingyuan, Guangdong, China.

The development of atherosclerosis is accompanied by the functional deterioration of plaque cells, which leads to the escalation of endothelial inflammation, abnormal vascular smooth muscle cell phenotype switching and the accumulation of lipid-laden macrophages within vascular walls. Autophagy, a highly conserved homeostatic mechanism, is critical for the delivery of cytoplasmic substrates to lysosomes for degradation. Moderate levels of autophagy prevent atherosclerosis by safeguarding plaque cells against apoptosis, preventing inflammation, and limiting the lipid burden, whereas excessive autophagy exacerbates cell damage and inflammation and thereby accelerates the formation of atherosclerotic plaques.

Brain tissues that are severely damaged by traumatic brain injury (TBI) is hardly regenerated, which leads to a cavity or a repair with glial scarring. Stem-cell therapy is one viable option to treat TBI-caused brain tissue damage, whose use is, whereas, limited by the low survival rate and differentiation efficiency of stem cells. To approach this problem, we developed an injectable hydrogel using imidazole groups-modified gelatin methacrylate (GelMA-imid).

Accelerated skeletal maturation is associated with overweight and obesity as early as preschool age: a cross-sectional study.

BMC Pediatr

September 2020

Graduate School of Health and Sports Science, Juntendo University, 1- 1 Hiraka-gakuendai, Inzai-city, Chiba, 270-1695, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the link between body mass index (BMI) and skeletal maturation in preschoolers, focusing on a sample of 1,330 Chinese children aged 3-6 years in Shanghai.
  • It finds that as BMI increases, so does the percentage of children experiencing accelerated skeletal maturation, with significant rates in both obese and older age groups.
  • Logistic regression analysis indicates that overweight and obese children are more likely to show accelerated skeletal maturation compared to their normal-weight peers, suggesting a potential health risk.

Propofol induces mitochondrial-associated protein LRPPRC and protects mitochondria against hypoxia in cardiac cells.

PLoS One

November 2020

The Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, Qingyuan City People's Hospital, Qingyuan, Guangdong Province, P.R. China.

Background: Hypoxia-induced oxidative stress is one of the main mechanisms of myocardial injury, which frequently results in cardiomyocyte death and precipitates life-threatening heart failure. Propofol (2,6-diisopropylphenol), which is used to sedate patients during surgery, was shown to strongly affect the regulation of physiological processes, including hypoxia-induced oxidative stress. However, the exact mechanism is still unclear.

Mitochondrial metabolism in regulating macrophage polarization: an emerging regulator of metabolic inflammatory diseases.

Acta Biochim Biophys Sin (Shanghai)

September 2020

The Second Affiliated Hospital of Guilin Medical University, Guangxi Key Laboratory of Diabetic Systems Medicine, Guilin Medical University, Guilin 541100, China.

As a major type of immune cells with heterogeneity and plasticity, macrophages are classically divided into inflammatory (M1) and alternative/anti-inflammatory (M2) types and play a crucial role in the progress of the inflammatory diseases. Recent studies have shown that metabolism is an important determinant of macrophage phenotype. Mitochondria, one of the most important compartments involving cell metabolism, are closely associated with the regulation of cell functions.

Long non-coding RNA H19 in atherosclerosis: what role?

Mol Med

July 2020

The Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, Qingyuan City People's Hospital, Qingyuan, 511518, Guangdong, China.

Atherosclerosis (AS) is widely accepted to be a multistep pathophysiological process associated with several other processes such as angiogenesis and inflammatory response. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are non-protein coding RNAs (more than 200 nucleotides in length) and can regulate gene expression at the transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels. Recent studies suggest that lncRNA-H19 plays important roles in the regulation of angiogenesis, adipocyte differentiation, lipid metabolism, inflammatory response, cellular proliferation and apoptosis.
