Prognosis of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma remains poor because of progression of hepatocellular carcinoma and high recurrence rates. Cyclin D2 (CCND2) plays a vital role in regulating the cell cycle; indeed, aberrant methylation of CCND2 is involved in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma. Therefore, we aimed to investigate levels of CCND2 methylation in patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV)-associated hepatocellular carcinoma and to evaluate its prognostic significance after hepatectomy.

There is emerging evidence that dysregulation of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) is associated with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Zinc finger E-box binding homeobox 1 antisense 1 (ZEB1-AS1) functions as an oncogenic regulator in various malignancies. Nonetheless, the potential role of ZEB1-AS1 in HCC remains poorly elucidated.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed the long-term survival of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients with portal vein tumor thrombus (PVTT), focusing on the influence of splenomegaly and splenectomy on outcomes after liver resection.
  • Out of 716 HCC patients, 140 had splenomegaly, and the study found that splenomegaly was linked to poorer overall and recurrence-free survival compared to those without it.
  • Patients who underwent splenectomy for splenomegaly showed significantly better survival rates than those who did not, highlighting the potential benefits of splenectomy in improving long-term outcomes for these patients.

Clinical usefulness of high levels of C-reactive protein for diagnosing epithelial ovarian cancer.

Sci Rep

November 2020

Department of Clinical Laboratory, Affiliated Qingdao Third People's Hospital, Qingdao University, Qingdao, 266021, China.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the diagnostic role of CRP in ovarian cancer and to assess whether CRP can be combined with tumor markers to enhance the diagnostic efficacy toward ovarian cancer. Area under the curve, sensitivity, and specificity were calculated to access the diagnostic ability of each singly and combined as markers for ovarian cancer. The CRP cut-off value was then calculated to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of CRP for ovarian cancer.

BACKGROUND Preeclampsia (PE) remains one of the primary causes of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide. This study was designed to investigate the relevance of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) nuclear-enriched abundant transcript 1 (NEAT1) and downstream molecules in trophoblast cell proliferation and apoptosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS NEAT1 expression in the placental tissues of rats with PE was analyzed by reverse transcriptionquantitative polymerase chain reaction.

Accumulating evidence suggest that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are dysregulated in various tumors and serve as crucial regulators in biological processes. Based on The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database, upregulation of CASC11 was associated with the low overall survival rate of patients with Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the function and mechanism of lncRNA CASC11 in the progression of HCC remain unclear.
