Int J Gen Med

October 2024

Department of Liver Disease, Qingdao Sixth People's Hospital, Qingdao, Shandong, 266033, People's Republic of China.

Objective: This paper examined miR-181a expression in the serum of patients with acute liver failure (ALF) and investigated the impact of its expression in the prognosis of ALF patients.

Methods: A total of 112 ALF patients (ALF group) and 100 healthy controls during the same period (control group) were recruited as study subjects, and ALF patients were separated into the survival group and the death group. Serum ALT, AST, SCr, TBil, PTA, and International Normalized Ratio (INR) indices as well as serum miR-181a expression were assessed by using a fully automated biochemistry analyzer and RT-qPCR.

Article Synopsis
  • Minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) significantly affects the quality of life and clinical outcomes in patients with cirrhosis, but it is difficult to diagnose promptly due to complex methods.
  • A study involving 673 healthy individuals and 905 cirrhosis patients established a diagnostic model using the Stroop test (Stroop-CN), which effectively detected MHE prevalence in both test and validation cohorts.
  • Results indicated that patients with MHE, particularly those with severe liver conditions, reported a lower quality of life compared to those without MHE, highlighting the need for accessible diagnostic tools like the Stroop-CN model.

Article Synopsis
  • Patients with clinically significant portal hypertension (CSPH) should be treated with non-selective beta-blockers like carvedilol to prevent liver decompensation, especially using liver stiffness (LS) measurements as a less invasive alternative to hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) measurements.
  • A study is planned to determine if patients with compensated cirrhosis and LS≥25 kPa can benefit from carvedilol, focusing on a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 446 adults.
  • The primary outcome will be the incidence of decompensation events and liver-related deaths over three years, while secondary outcomes will include various complications of portal hypertension such as

Background & Aims: Non-invasive models stratifying clinically significant portal hypertension (CSPH) are limited. Herein, we developed a new non-invasive model for predicting CSPH in patients with compensated cirrhosis and investigated whether carvedilol can prevent hepatic decompensation in patients with high-risk CSPH stratified using the new model.

Methods: Non-invasive risk factors of CSPH were identified via systematic review and meta-analysis of studies involving patients with hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG).

Clonorchiasis, an important foodborne parasitic disease, is prevalent in several Asian countries. In China, the three provinces with the highest incidence are Guangdong, Guangxi, and Heilongjiang, with no reported cases in Qingdao for nearly a decade. In this study, a 29-year-old male patient was diagnosed with fatty liver due to abnormal liver function during physical examination and was admitted to the hospital multiple times for examination and treatment within 3 years, but his liver function did not improve.

YES proto-oncogene 1 (YES1) is an SRC family kinase (SFK) that plays a key role in cancer cell proliferation, adhesion, invasion, survival, and angiogenesis during tumorigenesis and tumor development. Reports suggest that amplification is associated with resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs and tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) in human malignancies. However, the mechanisms of drug resistance have not been fully elucidated.

Improved prediction of prognosis and therapy response for lung adenocarcinoma after identification of DNA-directed RNA polymerase-associated lncRNAs.

J Cancer Res Clin Oncol

November 2023

Computational Systems Biology Lab (CSBL), Institute of Bioinformatics, The Marine Biomedical Research Institute, Guangdong Medical University, Zhanjiang, China.

Background: DNA-directed RNA polymerase (DDRP) related genes and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play an important role in the development of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), the leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Therefore, we aimed to construct a DDRP-associated lncRNA model to predict the prognosis of LUAD and to evaluate its sensitivity to immunotherapy and chemotherapy.

Methods: To construct a predictive signature, we used univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses, as well as the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression analysis.

Hypermethylation of thymosin β4 predicts a poor prognosis for patients with acute-on-chronic hepatitis B liver failure.

Hepatobiliary Pancreat Dis Int

August 2023

Department of Hepatology, Qilu Hospital of Shandong University, #107 Wenhuaxi Road, Jinan 250012, China; Institute of Hepatology, Shandong University, Jinan 250012, China. Electronic address:

Background: It has been demonstrated that thymosin β4 (Tβ4) could inflect the severity of acute-on-chronic hepatitis B liver failure (ACHBLF), but the relationship between its methylation status and the prognosis of liver failure is not clear. This study aimed to determine Tβ4 promoter methylation status in patients with ACHBLF and to evaluate its prognostic value.

Methods: The study recruited 115 patients with ACHBLF, 80 with acute-on-chronic hepatitis B pre-liver failure (pre-ACHBLF), and 86 with chronic hepatitis B (CHB).

Role of ANO1 in tumors and tumor immunity.

J Cancer Res Clin Oncol

August 2022

Department of Clinical Laboratory, Affiliated Qingdao Third People's Hospital, Qingdao University, Qingdao, 266021, China.

Dysregulation of gene amplification, cell-signaling-pathway transduction, epigenetic and transcriptional regulation, and protein interactions drives tumor-cell proliferation and invasion, while ion channels also play an important role in the generation and development of tumor cells. Overexpression of Ca-activated Cl- channel anoctamin 1 (ANO1) is shown in numerous cancer types and correlates with poor prognosis. However, the mechanisms involved in ANO1-mediated malignant cellular transformation and the role of ANO1 in tumor immunity remain unknown.

Background: We aimed to determine whether the methylation status of thymosin β4 (Tβ4) promoter reflects the severity of acute-on-chronic hepatitis B liver failure (ACHBLF) and whether glucocorticoids affect this status.

Methods: Fifty-six patients with ACHBLF, 45 with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and 32 healthy controls (HCs), were retrospectively enrolled. Methylation-specific PCR and real-time PCR were used to detect Tβ4 methylation frequency and mRNA level.

Nowadays, microRNA-375 (miR-375) has been implicated in many types of cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and the functions of miRNAs encapsulated by extracellular vesicles (EV) in HCC progression have also been extensively investigated. In this research, we aimed to probe into the mechanism of EV-encapsulated miR-375 from bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) in HCC progression. At first, miR-375 expression in HCC tissues and cells was detected using RT-qPCR, and miR-375 was overexpressed to specify the effects of miR-375 on the malignant phenotype of HCC cells.
