The current study aimed to investigate the role and underlying mechanisms of circ_LARP4 in diabetic nephropathy (DN). Here, mouse mesangial cells (SV40-MES13) were cultured with 30 mM glucose to establish a DN cellular model. The qRT-PCR results indicated that circ_LARP4 expression was downregulated in the DN cellular model compared to that in the control cells.

Article Synopsis
  • Diabetic nephropathy is a major global cause of severe kidney disease, with circular RNAs (circRNAs) playing a significant but unclear role in its progression.
  • This study specifically examines the circ-AKT3/miR-296-3p/E-cadherin network, demonstrating that circ-AKT3 can reduce fibrosis-related proteins and cell death in mesangial cells exposed to high glucose levels, common in diabetes.
  • Findings suggest that circ-AKT3 helps prevent damage by regulating the interaction between miR-296-3p and E-cadherin, potentially leading to new strategies for diagnosing and treating diabetic nephropathy.

Background: Inconsistent findings have been reported regarding the association of C-reactive protein to albumin ratio (CAR) with survival outcome in patients with pancreatic cancer. We conducted the current meta-analysis to assess the prognostic utility of elevated baseline CAR in predicting overall survival (OS) in pancreatic cancer patients.

Methods: A comprehensively literature search was performed in the PubMed and Embase database until February 10, 2019.

Lung cancer is a devastating cancer with high morbidity and mortality. Ubiquitin‑specific protease (USP) is a type of deubiquitinating enzyme (DUB) that has been implicated in numerous cancers, including colorectal, myeloma and breast. In the present study, the expression of USP51 was determined in the lung cancer cell line A549 and cisplatin (also known as DDP)‑resistant lung cancer strain A549/DDP.

Initial diagnosis and management of adult community-acquired pneumonia: a 5-day prospective study in Shanghai.

J Thorac Dis

April 2020

Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Ruijin Hospital, Institute of Pulmonary Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Shanghai 200020, China.

Background: Despite the release of a national guideline in 2016, the actual practices with respect to adult community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) remain unknown in China. We aimed to investigate CAP patient management practices in Shanghai to identify potential problems and provide evidence for policy making.

Methods: A short-period, 5-day prospective cross-sectional study was performed with sampled pulmonologists from 36 hospitals, encompassing all the administrative districts of Shanghai, during January 8-12, 2018.

We aimed to investigate the effects of CX-C chemokine receptor type 4 (CXCR4) on transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1-induced cardiac fibrosis in Human cardiac fibroblasts (HCFs). HCFs were stimulated with TGF-β1, and the level of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) was assessed by immunofluorescence assay. The expression of CXCR4 was detected by Western blotting.

Laboratory of Stem Cells, Institute of Cell Biology, College of Life Sciences, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, Zhejiang 310058, China.

CHARGE syndrome is a rare disease caused by a genetic disorder. The clinical features of this syndrome include coloboma of the eye, heart anomaly, choanal atresia, retardation of mental and somatic development, microphallus, ear abnormalities and/or deafness. CHD7 is the main causative gene for CHARGE syndrome.

Effect of atorvastatin inhibition of endoplasmic reticulum stress and amelioration of atherosclerosis through AMPK pathway were studied. Eight-week-old male apolipoprotein E-deficient (ApoE/) mice were fed with high-fat diet for 2 weeks and randomly divided into two groups: Atorvastatin treatment group was given atorvastatin (5 mg/kg/day) injection for a total of 6 weeks; control group was given the same dose of PBS through intraperitoneal injection for a total of 6 weeks. H&E staining was used to detect plaque size; immunohistochemical staining was used to detect T cells, macrophages and phospho-protein kinase-like ER kinase (phospho-PERK) in localized plaques.

Recently, microRNAs have been recognized as crucial regulators of diabetic nephropathy (DN) development. Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) can play a significant role in tubulointerstitial fibrosis, and it is a hallmark of diabetic nephropathy progression. Nevertheless, the function of miR-98-5p in the modulation of EMT and renal fibrosis during DN remains barely investigated.

The diagnostic nomogram of platelet-based score models for hepatic alveolar echinococcosis and atypical liver cancer.

Sci Rep

December 2019

Department of Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery, the Affiliated Hospital of Qinghai University and Qinghai Province Key Laboratory of Hydatid Disease Research, Qinghai University, Xining, 81000, China.

Hepatic alveolar echinococcosis (HAE) and liver cancer had similarities in imaging results, clinical characteristics, and so on. And it is difficult for clinicians to distinguish them before operation. The aim of our study was to build a differential diagnosis nomogram based on platelet (PLT) score model and use internal validation to check the model.

Article Synopsis
  • RBBP6 is upregulated in colorectal cancer (CRC) and is linked to poor prognosis and increased metastasis.
  • RBBP6 functions as an E3 ubiquitin ligase that enhances CRC cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, as well as tumor growth in mouse models.
  • The study reveals that RBBP6 promotes the degradation of IκBα, activating the NF-κB pathway, which leads to epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and higher metastatic potential in CRC.

Intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) is associated with the nucleus pulposus (NP) cells inflammation and apoptosis. Previous studies have shown that glycyrrhizin (GL) is a valid inhibitor of the high-mobility group box-1 gene (HMGB1) which expressed much higher in an inflammatory condition. However, it is not known whether GL protects against IDD by the inhibition of HMGB1.
