Abrogation of KLF5 sensitizes -proficient pancreatic cancer to PARP inhibition.

Acta Biochim Biophys Sin (Shanghai)

April 2024

Department of Pancreatic Surgery, Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai 200032, China.

Poly ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) inhibitor monotherapies are selectively effective in patients with pancreatic, breast, prostate, and ovarian cancers with mutations. Cancer patients with more frequent wild-type show poor responses to PARP inhibitors. Moreover, patients who are initially sensitive to these inhibitors eventually respond poorly to drugs.

Article Synopsis
  • Parkinson's disease can cause not just movement problems but also feelings of sadness, lack of motivation, and depression in patients.
  • A study in China with 195 patients showed that more than half of them had these negative feelings at the same time, which made their thinking and movement problems worse.
  • The research found that when patients had more negative feelings, their thinking skills got worse and their movement difficulties increased, and that thinking problems partly explained why their movement issues were getting worse too.

Scope: Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is an increasingly common chronic liver disease in which hepatic fibrosis is the major pathological change. The transforming growth factor β (TGF-β)/mall mothers against decapentaplegic (Smad) signaling is the main effector of fibrosis. Although the antifibrotic effect of echinacoside (Ech) on the liver has been indicated previously, the cellular and molecular mechanisms remain unclear.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between impulse control behaviors (ICBs) and apathy in early Parkinson's disease (PD), considering their potential as markers for disease prognosis.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 422 PD patients and 195 healthy controls, discovering that a notable number of PD patients displayed both ICBs and apathy, along with more severe non-motor symptoms.
  • The findings suggest that the simultaneous presence of ICBs and apathy in early PD patients is a significant risk factor for the development of levodopa-induced dyskinesia (LID).

Regulates Angiogenesis via the /NOTCH1 Axis and Associates with Myocardial Perfusion in Patients with Coronary Chronic Total Occlusion.

Int J Mol Sci

January 2024

Department of Cardiology, Shanghai Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai 200032, China.

Revascularization of coronary chronic total occlusion (CTO) still remains controversial. The factors that impact collateral circulation and myocardial perfusion are of interest. Circular RNA (circRNA) has been shown to regulate the process of angiogenesis.

Background: In the Asian population, the presence of the CYP2C19 loss-of-function (LOF) allele is a known genetic variation. This allele is associated with a reduced capacity to metabolize clopidogrel into its active forms through the CYP2C19 enzyme, resulting in diminished platelet inhibition and an elevated risk of recurrent cardiovascular events. Regulatory authorities have recommended an alternative P2Y12 inhibitor, ticagrelor, for individuals carrying the LOF allele.

Background: Several large-scale observational studies have found deep vein thrombosis (DVT) to be related with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, whether there is a clear causal connection between the two is unknown.

Methods: Our primary analytical method was the inverse variance-weighted (IVW) approach, complemented by the Mendelian randomisation-Egger (MR-Egger) and weighted median methods.

Introduction: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a prevalent heart arrhythmia in elderly adults aged 80 years or older. The red cell distribution width (RDW) to albumin ratio has been acknowledged as a reliable prognostic marker for poor outcomes in a variety of disorders. However, there exists limited scientific evidence on the association of RDW to albumin (RAR) with mortality in geriatric individuals with AF.
