Physical activity has been reported to positively influence quality of life and survival in certain cancers. However, the associations between them in esophageal cancer are previously undefined. The aims of this study are to investigate whether physically active esophageal cancer patients have improved quality of life and lower risk of recurrence as well as death compared with physically inactive patients.

Aims/introduction: Chemokine ligand 5 (CCL5) is a member of the CC-chemokine family expressed in various organs. It contributes to the migration of monocytes/macrophages into injured vascular walls by binding with its receptor chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5). Many studies have accessed the association between CCL5/CCR5 gene promoter polymorphisms and diabetic microvascular complications (DMI).

Biliary papillomatosis (BP) is a rare disease characterized by multiple numerous papillary adenomas in both the intrahepatic and extrahepatic biliary tree. Due to its high recurrence rate and frequent transformation to malignancy, BP should not be considered a benign disease, and a radical resection with an adequate resection margin is advocated in cases of localized intrahepatic biliary papillomatosis. Since BP is a rare disease and its clinical features and outcomes are not well known, it's really difficult to diagnose the disease before operation.

Objective: A meta-analysis was undertaken to provide evidence-based clinical trials comparing radiofrequency ablation with partial nephrectomy for small renal mass.

Methods: We searched through the major medical databases such as Pub Med, EMBASE, Medline, Science Citation Index, Web of Science and CNKI (Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure Database) and Wangfang (Database of Chinese Ministry of Science & Technology) for all published studies without any limit on language from May 2007 until May 2015. The following search terms wereused: partial nephrectomy, radiofrequency ablation, renal cell carcinoma, small renal tumor or mass.

Bile acid plays an important role in regulating blood glucose, lipid and energy metabolism. The present study was implemented to determine the effect of duodenal-jejunal bypass (DJB) on FXR, TGR-5expression in terminal ileum and its bile acid-related mechanism on glucose and lipid metabolism. Immunohistochemistry was used to detect relative gene or protein expression in liver and intestine.

Nasal polyps (NP) involve tissue repair and structural remodel, both of which require the extracellular matrix. Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP) are known regulators for tissue reconstruction. This study therefore aimed to analyze the expressional profile of MMP-9 and TIMP-2 in NP patients, with further investigation of their roles in pathogenesis.

Objective: This study was to analyze the acylation-stimulating protein (ASP) (301T>C) and C5a-like receptor 2 (C5L2) (698C>T) gene polymorphisms in Han and Hui populations, and investigate their association with coronary heart disease (CHD).

Methods: 245 Han CHD patients and 110 Hui CHD patients from Shandong, Jinan, China were included in this study. Biochemical analysis was performed to assess the blood sugar and lipid levels in these patients, and the TaqMan genotyping assay was used to determine the genotype distribution.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical outcome of excision repair cross-complementing protein 1 (ERCC1) and X-ray repair cross-complementing protein 1 (XRCC1) gene polymorphisms in 89 patients receiving oxaliplatin/5-fluorouracil-based chemotherapy as a first-line treatment regimen for advanced gastric cancer. ERCC1 codon 118C/T and XRCC1 codon 399A/G polymorphisms were identified using quantitative polymerase chain reactions, and the associations between disease control rate (DCR), median overall survival (mOS) and gene polymorphisms were analyzed. Following two cycles of chemotherapy, a complete response was observed in two patients, a partial response in 18 patients, stable disease in 38 patients and progressive disease in 31 patients.

Context: As many studies proved that sodium iodide symporter (NIS) plays a key role in radioactive iodide (RAI) therapy of thyroid cancer, however, a growing number of studies suggests that part of differentiated thyroid carcinomas (DTC) with overexpression of NIS are insensitive to RAI well.

Objective: The aim of this meta-analysis is to assess the expression of NIS in differentiated thyroid cancer, compared with normal thyroid tissue.

Data Sources: PUBMED, Sinomed, CNKI, Wanfang and VIP were searched for relevant case-control studies up to now.

Metastatic malignancies of the hand are rare and metastases to the skeletal muscle from the gastrointestinal system are even much rare. Here we present a case of metastatic ileocecal adenocarcinoma to the thenar muscle, which is the first report of thenar muscle metastasis from ileocecal adenocarcinoma with P53 mutation. To date, only two other cases of thenar muscle metastasis have been documented, one is from squamous cell carcinoma of the lung and the other is from rectal carcinoma.

Progranulin (PGRN) has been shown to be involved in the process of inflammation, wound healing, and cartilage development; and its role in the progression of breast and ovarian cancer is also well established. However, the expression status of PGRN in colorectal cancers (CRCs) and its molecular mechanisms responsible for tumorigenesis have not been addressed so far. Herein, we demonstrated that PGRN was highly expressed and had clinical relevance with CRCs since its overexpression was associated with advanced stages of CRCs, poorer patients' prognosis, and increased expression of proliferation and angiogenesis markers.

Despite advances made in the diagnosis and treatment of human colorectal cancer (CRC), the long-term survival for CRC remains poor. Long non-coding RNA anti-differentiation ncRNA (lncRNA DANCR) was identified to be involved in carcinogenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma. While its expression in CRC and potential role in tumor progression is still unknown.

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of nucleoprotein factor-kB (NF-κB) on the production and secretion of vasoactive substances adrenomedullin (ADM) and prostacyclin (PGI2) by endothelial cells in a high blood flow, pulmonary hypertension in vivo model. Fifty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups: 15 rats received shunt surgery (Tn group); 15 rats received shunt surgery + NF-κB inhibitor [pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC)] (Ti group); 10 rats received sham surgery (Co group); and 10 rats were negative controls (Cn group). A left to right shunt pulmonary hypertension model was established in groups Tn and Ti.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide and about 85% of these are non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Several new chemotherapeutic agents have recently shown encouraging activity in NSCLC, especially docetaxel. MiRNAs (MicroRNAs) are closely related to cancer development.

Background: Methylation of sodium iodide symporter promoter has been reported to increase the incidence of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). In this meta-analysis stratified via methylation of sodium iodide symporter promoter, we evaluate the relationship between methylation of sodium iodide symporter promoter and PTC. The association between methylation with aggressiveness and metastasis potential of PTC is also discussed.

Interleukin-8 is a prognostic indicator in human hilar cholangiocarcinoma.

Int J Clin Exp Pathol

June 2016

Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery, Key Laboratory of Cardiovascular Remodeling and Function Research, Chinese Ministry of Education and Public Health, Qilu Hospital of Shandong University Jinan 250012, Shandong, P. R. China.

Interleukin-8 (IL-8), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and neovascularization have been implicated to be associated with biological processes, especially cancer progression. However, few studies have investigated the role of IL-8 in human hilar cholangiocarcinoma. In this study we detected the expression of IL-8 combined with MMP-9 and microvessel density (MVD) in hilar cholangiocarcinoma to evaluate their clinicopathological significance and prognostic value.
